Sure it would be helpful to know what M.J. stood for! Or to know who his parents were, but the biographies were not helpful with either question. I reprinted these biographies exactly the way they were originally printed. It would not be appropriate to include my opinion of anything that was not provided in that source. Someone else might interpret the same information differently. And anyway, what fun would this be if there were no mysteries to solve?
When I posted these, I did not know the answers to your questions. They were posted for everyone's benefit and enjoyment. After further research, I believe that Tamara is correct. This is Manley Jackson Belden. My tentative theory on his parents is that they were Comfort & Eliza Belden from Steuben Co., New York. I believe Comfort died before 1870 when Eliza is listed with her son-in-law, Thomas Wilbur in Maquoketa, Jackson Co., Iowa.
I have posted my research online at: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d.... It is far from complete, but I welcome additions and corrections. Have Fun!

M. J. Belden could of been a Manley Belden. I did a little looking around and in 1870 census there was a Manley Belden in Jackson Co, Iowa born abt 1844 in Steuben Co. Iowa. Now in Steuben Co.NY there was a Comfort Belden , who apparently went to Iowa as his wife was there , there was also a John Belden in Steuben Co NY and an Erastus. The other Belden in Jackson Co Iowa were related just don't know who belonged to whom.

Dr. M.J. Belden biography - 1879

M.J. BELDEN, physician, Canton. Mr. Belden is one of the most honored citizens of Canton; he has been a resident of Canton and in the practice of medicine since 1854. He was born in Steuben Co., N.Y., where in early life he received a preparatory education which fitted him for the study of medicine, after which he entered the Steuben College, and received a thorough medical education. He is genial in manner, generous in his feelings, enterprising and public spirited, and in him Canton has a citizen she could ill afford to be without. In 1862, Dr. Belden married Miss Celia Atkinson; they have one child, Lutie. - 1879 History of Jackson county Iowa, pg 757.

Dr. M.J. Belden - 1910 Biography

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF DR. M.J. BELDEN.
(BY DR. A.B. BOWEN, M.D.)
The subject of this biographical sketch, M.J. Belden, M.D., was born in Steuben county, New York, A.D. 1831, and located in the little inland town of Canton, Iowa, in 1855, after exercising all the patience and self reliance that is usual for medical students to bring to bear in the accomplishment of their object and the consummation of their cherished hopes. But the courage and fortitude required to sever the ties of home and embark on his life's mission, the practice of his chosen profession, in the wilderness of the west, on the confines of civilization, requires a firmness of purpose and a spirit of philanthropy that surmounts obstacles and breaks down barriers that would discourage one of less firmly fixed purposes.
The little hamlet known by the name of Canton fifty years ago, nestling in the big timber of the forks of the Maquoketa, had few allurements for one who had learned the ways of the world in a more advanced civilization and the more refined social life of Steuben county, New York. But the subject of our sketch evidently did not contemplate reclining upon the lap of luxury and ease, but rather to court fame and fortune from the rugged resources of nature. It would seem that the conditions around Canton were not altogether congenial to his tastes, for he resolved to explore and prospect the country westward, and in 1858 he journeyed across the state on horseback, as he once informed me, to acquaint himself with conditions, and perhaps find a spot that offered greater inducements to his tastes and inclinations than his first stopping place afforded. But he was not favorably impressed with the broad and timberless Iowa prairies and returned to his "first love" and cast his destinies in the primeval forests that shaded the Maquoketa.
In 1862 Dr. Belden married one of Canton's fair daughters, Miss Cecelia Atkinson, and together they achieved success and carved fame and fortune from this rugged field of action.
Here for over forty years he responded to the calls of those who appreciated his services, and through the vicissitudes of the varying seasons, he was ever a welcome guest at the comfortable home of the thrifty farmer or the lonely cabin of the pioneer. His services were not sought in vain, for he was ever on the alert to respond to the call of those in suffering and distress. His midnight rides through the gloomy forest, that skirted his town of Canton, sometimes startled the wild deer from its lurking place, and sometimes these lonely trips at unreasonable hours were serenaded by the howl of the wolf if not by the fierce scream of the catamount.
The practitioner of medicine in an isolated field like Canton, learns to be more self-reliant than he who finds himself located in a more attractive field of labor where doctors by the dozen or score, perhaps, share the honors of the surrounding advantages, while they expect to divide the responsibilities that none are exempt from.
But the physician in the remote field has not a brother practitioner at his elbow to call in consultation at the ever approaching crisis, but in his gladatorial encounter with the grim messenger, he learns to be self-reliant and resourceful, and thus through force of necessity becomes a stronger and abler practitioner. But the time came, as it comes to all "when wasting age and weary strife had sapped the leaning walls of life." In 1898, a stroke of paralysis prostrated his iron constitution and compelled the relinquishment of practice, much to the regret of a large number of patients and patrons. It was my mission to see him during this crisis in his life, and I remember well the philosophy with which he met this trial. A temporary rally of his vital forces enabled him to abandon the scenes of his trials and triumphs and locate in Maquoketa, where he died, in October, 1902, aged seventy-one years, leaving a wife and one daughter who mourn the loss of a kind husband and father.
Dr. Belden took a lively interest in the Jackson County Medical Society, although his attendance upon its meetings required a drive of some forty miles; notwithstanding this hardship he occasionally honored us with his presence and participated in the discussions and read papers on scientific subjects. – 1910 History of Jackson county Iowa, pgs. 368-69
In " The American Genealogist ", Paul C. Reed, FASG & John C. B. Sharp wrote the above. It appeared in Vol. 76, No 1 (Jan 2001): 20-28 & Vol. 76 (Apr 2001): 122-128. Is this the complete article or was there more? I ask because I want to make sure I have read the entire article. Also, I have found a reference online to it from the "Register" by Henry B. Hoff: TAG 77 (Oct 2002):a&c 313. Looking at the TAG homepage, there is no mention of the Belden family listed in the articles for Oct 2002, page 313 is listed as CORRECTIONS TO TAG. Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,
Pam Belden

Maybe some day.I went on ancestry and did some research on census's and family trees. It was pretty easy. The strange thing was I couldn't find Wm Henry's wife before Salt Lake. That made me curios but I am trying to calm my curiosity as I often get side tracked. I wish you luck..
Tamara

HI Donna,
William Henry Belden was born in 1860 in Brownville, Nehama Co., Nebraska to Seymore Belding/Belden and Rebecca Pfoutz. They had several children of which William was the youngest. In 1870 William lived with his mother (widowed) and a couple of his sibblings in North Bend, Dodge, Nebraska. If you check out rootsweb you will find info on Seymore/Seymour Belden who married Rebecca Pfoutz 2 May 1842 in Wayne Co., Ohio. All their children were born the except William. William Henry had a sibbling named George and one named Inez . Seems they were leaning toward naming all their children after his sibblings. Not unusual. However he died before that could happen. William's father was born Seymore Belding and at some time like so many dropping it to Belden. Good Luck.
Tamara

William Belden (1622-1655) Documentation?

In looking for information on the Belden family, I found some town histories and genealogy reports on HeritageQuest Online regarding Richard Belden (Belding/Baildon, etc).

Everything I've found lists Samuel & John Belden as being the sons of Richard, but nowhere is William listed.

I notice that a lot of people have plugged William in as a child of Richard, and I'm wondering where that information comes from. Does anyone have documentation of the connection? I would love to have a source to connect Richard as William's father.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

From what I've seen, Richard Belden (Belding, Baildon, etc.) was born in 1591 in England and died in Wethersfield, CT in 1655.

His sons were all born in England. Son Samuel died in Massachusetts, John in Connecticut.

William, the son I haven't been able to dcoument also supposedly died in Wethersfield, CT.

William is listed as Richard's son on no less than 150 trees on ancestry.com, but I can find no records or outside information to corroborate this.

I'm hoping that somebody will be able to share some sources with me as to where their information came from.

Anybody?
Hi Marilyn: Hope this address is still good. Your Edgar is indeed a son of Samuel Chapmen Belden. Samuel and his line are from Mass. My line is through Samuel's brother, Horace Belden. Horace also lived in the Hamilton area and married Mary Fish from that area before moving on to Illinois. I don't have anything on Edgar moving from Hamilton area. If he did, it must have been for a short time. Per his death certificate, he died in Hamilton and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Are you related? I'd be glad to exchange information.
-Sharon

I have used the following to resolve any differences/discrepancies I've run across, (and
there many), in compiling "FRED BELDEN'S ANCESTRY".

"The parentage of Richard BELDEN (d. Aug. 1655, Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT) has not been absolutely proved. The most probable BELDEN ancestry is presented here, summarized from a two part article "The English Ancestry of Richard Belden of Wethersfield, Connecticut, With the Probable Ancestry of William Belden of Westherfield," by Paul C. REED in The American Genealogist (76:1-2, Jan and Apr 2001). Refer to the cited article for the text of the 1576/7 will of Richard BAILDON, and many other details. For further discussion from earlier publications, refer to the Appendix on the Belden English Ancestry."

The primary source of information on the BELDEN line is The Family History of Judge Ellsworth B. Belden and Collateral Families, by Stanly R. Belden and Elvera K. Belden, 1980. Additional details were obtained from other published sources, including the Paul C. REED article noted in the Belden Ancestry in England introduction.

BOTH OF THESE CAN BE VIEWED at:
http://kinnexions.com/smlawson/belden.htm#RBelden

This scholarly research refutes the idea that the "Beldens"
are descended from "Sir Francis Baildon", knighted by King Henry II, in 1603.
Dang shame too - if would have been cool to have a Knight in the Family.
If U have any Questions/critiques/hints for me, send them to me at:

fredzstuf@hotmail.com

I certainly make no claim to be an authority, but I have worked diligently to eliminate some the
more obvious errors - i.e. mothers having children 20 years after they died, etc.
HOPE THIS HELPS....FRED

Belden family from Norway in Washington State

Looking for information on Norwegian origins of Belden family in Pierce County.

My great grandmother was Johanna M. Belden b. abt 1871 in Norway. She had a brother Ed, and sisters Edna, Carrie and Maude. She immigrated to USA abt 1880 and married Samuel B. Evenson abt 1890. They lived in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. I do not know when Johanna died - sometime between 1910 and 1920.

According to her daughter, my grandmother, Johanna's mother was named Bergitta/Birgitte and she followed her children to the USA after the death of her husband. She lived with her daughter Carrie Belden Johnson in Parkland, Pierce County, Washington. I have found a Birgitta Olson listed living with Matthias and Carrie Johnson in Parkland in 1910 census. Could she be Johanna's mother?

Is Belden a Norwegian farm name? Could Olson be Birgitte's married name in the American convention? Or is her patronymic surname be Olsdatter? Any clues to finding Beldens from Norway in the Pacific Northwest would be greatly helpful.

Your name will not show up because you are still living. Your late father's name will be visible.

Re: William Belden (1622-1655) Documentation?

Documentation from this era is not easy to come by!

What is clear is that Richard appeared in Wethersfield ca. 1641. I know of no records that detail how he came there or even how he came to the "New World".

With him were three purported sons who may have been his sons, cousins, or almost anything else. They apparently shared the "Belden" or "Baildon" or "Bayldon" surname. (Spelling was a matter of opinion in those days!) Most of the rest relies heavily on guesswork!

Several years ago, "The American Genealogist" published an article entitled "The English Ancestry of Richard Baildon of Wethersfield" or some similar title. The author presented the available evidence and concluded that "our" Richard was NOT the son of Sir Francis Baildon. This flushed the so called "Royal Ancestry" down the toilet.

It makes some suggestions as to the possible origins of "our" Richard. Interesting reading!

If you have the time, the funds, and the skills you might be able improve our knowledge of Richard's ancestry.

I have about 140 men named "James Belden"!

It would be most helpful to have his dates of birth and death.

I can see that there is an inscription but the light isn't good enough to allow me to read it!

Would you, by any chance, have the date of James Belden's birth? Based on the information available so far, I'm guessing at 1807-1808.
