Hi Lois

I don't have the name Yanoff in my records BUT according to Barney's granddaughter Barney and Max Belgrade's mother was Ethel Yanofski (if Russian more likely Yanofsky). According to grandson, Harry Belgrade, Louis Belgrod owned a store in New London and did not speak english very well.

The family immigrated from what is presently Kiev Ukraine between 1898 and 1903.

Ethel was born about 1865 and died in 1950 in Norwich CT. She is buried in Ohave Shalom Cem in Waterford, CT. As your grandfather wasn't born until 1889, I would think that perhap HIS father was a brother of Ethel.

I was unable to find a record for Samuel in Ct drafts. Could you email me details? I have contacted you via message board with my direct contact info. I'll send you what I have.
Wanda

Wanda, My father, Leo Yanoff, whose father was Samuel Yanoff, of Boston, Massachusetts knew his cousin, Leonore Yavener, who is the daughter of Max Yavener and Shirley Belgrade. He also knew Barney and Rose Belgrade, Rose, his aunt attended the wedding of my father and mother Leo and Miriam Yanoff. Anyway, I saw your post and am new to genealogy. I am trying to figure out the relationship between the Yanoffs and the Belgrades. My Dads father Samuel Yanoff came to the U.S. in 1915 and was in New London Conneticut when he signed up for the draft in WWI. He later came to Boston. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated! Lois

Belgrade / Belgrod Russia>CT

In creating a genealogy, we are desperately trying to locate other descendants of Mordecai Belgrod who lived in the New London, CT area. His known sons were Louis & David. I have nothing further on David but have some on Louis, b 1862 Russia and his wife Esther.

Louis & Esther had the following children:
1. Sadie Belgrade
2. Barney Belgrade m. Rose Shapero & had: Louis, Mack, Harry & Dorothy
3. Samuel Belgrade m. Molly Weitzman & had: Nathan, Sarah, Max, David , Harry, & William
4. Max Belgrade m. Jennie Colnic & had Shirlee & Edward
5. Clara Belgrade m. David Alter & had Haskell, Gladys & Elliot
6. Isidor Belgrod m. Esther [nee?] & had Allan - possibly others
7. Shirley Belgrade m. Max Yavener & had Martin & a daughter

Descendants are known to live in New London and other parts of CT, NY, MA, NJ, NE, KS, CA, FL and probably others. If these names are familiar, please contact me.
I don't know of any connection but have gathered a very little more information on the family since my last post.

Louis Belgrod's hebrew name was Elihu, son of Mordecai. He was born September 15, 1862 in Russia. Louis is most likely the name he took to Americanize himself after immigrating to the US. In the 1920 census his place of birth is given as Poland and his date of immigration is given as 1889.

Louis had a brother David Belgrod - possibly others.

According to the obituary of Louis' son Samuel (b. Jan 1, 1886 in Russia), Samuel "ran away from home at the age of 16 and in Germany he joined a Greek liner where he worked as a cook's assistant. He learned to speak fluent Greek and after settling in this country, he befriended many Greeks."
