Due to the fact that several of my ancestors were AME ministers and i located a story of of a James Belin (slave owner) that taught his slaves about the methodist religion. At this time we are planning a family union. Call me at 850-264-4569 cell or home 850-656-4569 home after 6 pm.
Tonya Morris-Gennie

Re: Belin Family name and origins

If you are a black Belin and of South Carolina, odds are you family were slaves of the Allard Belin and James Belin's slaves. Allard Belin Hemingway was a son of a female Belin--not sure which one currently as my records are on a different computer. But that's the connection. If you are an Arkansas black Belin, you are a descendent of a Slave from Lewis Belin's plantation. If you can get your ancestry back to Philadelpha/Deleware (near the DC area) before the civil war, you probably were a descendant of a slave from Augustus Belin who previously owned planataions in Santo Domingo before the slave revolt there and then worked for the Duponts. He probably had slaves here. If anyone knows anyting about Indian Belin's please contact me at charlie.belin@yahoo.com I don't know much about this connection and would like to learn more.

Re: Belin Ancestry

there is a connection but it goes way way way back to when the Belin's were in France back under King Louis's time. They were fleeing from Catholic domain and moved all over. There are some Jewish Belin's and I am not sure exactly how those are connected yet, but am working on it. I'm in the early stages of learning French because at this point all the documents are French. But the Belin's were prominent during the 1500s in La Rochelle France. There were also some Belin's in Paris about this time as well. We pronounce our name Bee Lynn, some pronounce their name Blaine, and some say Bay lin. The pronounciation is important it can tell us what line. There are also some Indian Belin's not sure how that came to be. My line and th Dupont Belins share the same lineage and pronounciation. The South Carolina Belin's who have moved elsewhere came here in 1695 directly from La Rochelle. Our Belin's came in 1791 from Santo Domingo but before they were from La Rochelle as well. Some Belin's moved to Rotterdam and I don't know what happened to that group. We were merchants and we shipped Africans to America as part of the slave trade and we owned large plantations in South Carolina, the west indies and Louisiana when we first migrated across the Atlantic. The famous David Belin who investigated the Kennedy murder case is of Jewish descent. The Jack Belin who built Houston basically and recently passed away is from the South Carolina Belins. I am of the Arkansas Santo Domingo Belin's. Harry Belin, who owns EverMay in DC is of the same line as us, but is officially of the Dupont Belins. Any questions charlie.belin@yahoo.com

Hi Syla. The Belin slaver we are we are linked to during slavery originated in Georgetown, SC and moved to PeeDee (Johnsonville, SC) area to live with his uncle. From there he became a wealthy merchant and was able to purchase several Africans for enslavement.

Georgetown, Charleston and other areas of coastal South Carolina got their slaves early on from the West Indies and later from West Africa, primarily (Sierra Leonne, Gambia) and other rice planting regions. South Carolinians in the Low Country islands such of St. Helena's, Yaccamaw, etc. do in fact use a dialect that sounds a lot like English speaking West Indians. There was a lot of movement between PeeDee and Georgetown in the early years i.e., tobacco, timber, cotton moving from one place to the next. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hi, my name is michelle Jarmond and I've been told our family is originally from Newbern SC. For the longest time I wondered were our name came from and I was wondering if we are any relation to one another. I grew up in NY but now reside in VA. My Grandaddy's name was James Jarmond aka Clyde. I think there were 5 boys and 1 girl my Aunt Edna who still lives in NY 95 years old. My main question is "is the name french or German"?

Hello,

My name is Shyla Belin, my family was part of the Belin ownership, slaves. Are there any records that you can help me find when the Belins first purchased slaves, and possible what countries they came from, Some of my family seems that we came from the Islands first and probably originated from Africa. What also is interesting, I have a Henry Belin form South Carolina, where some of my ancestors were slaves in Georgetown County, SC. No one told me whether he was white or black, but I have a hunch there is possibly relation. The slaves that were on plantations or homes were named after the owners. I hope someone can direct me to find out any information.

Thanks again,

Shyla Belin

Re: Belin Ancestry

Actually there probably is a relationship between all the Belin's. The last name is very very rare and roots back to France to Chateau de Belin 1200s. Any American that is African American has the last name from the Belin slave owners in South Carolina and Arkansas. The Belin's during the European invasion and migration after the middle ages for religious reasons mostly were Huguenots. The only one that is documented to revert back to Catholicism was Jean Baptiste Belin so he could paint for King Louis XIV(??). The Belin's were merchants from a port in FRance called La Rochelle. They held public office from the 1500s until the 1700s. There are still some Belin's there although the Belin empire faded away during th mid 1700s. They owned ships that carried slaves. All of the Belins that came to America during the late 1600s and 1700s to New York, South Carolina, and the West Indies were more than likely from this family. Not only did they migrate to the US and WEst Indies and with some evidence Canada they also migrated to Rotterdam, England, and Sweden. The prononciation of the last name is quite cruical of when the family broke away and the roots of the country in which they came. I have sources all of this information and am working on it collaborating it all for my doctorate thesis. Most comes from infromation from La Rochelle France and various wills that have been left. There are serveral prominant Belins left in the US, in houston and on the East Coast. At one time the Belin's were quite the family.

Peter B. Alston / Belin / Joseph Belin Allston

Looking for the ancestry of my ggggrandfather, Peter B. Alston, born in South Carolina sometime in the 1790's - dates usually given are 1793,94 and 96. Married to Martha King, July 14, 1819, Halifax, North Carolina. Two sons born in early 1820's in NC, George W. and James, before the family moved to Muscogee Co. GA area around the 1830's to 1840's. Then later moved across the state line and a bit northward to Chambers Co. Alabama by 1850 (borders Troup Co., West Point, Georgia). There is no listing for Peter B. Alston after the 1850 census, however his wife and youngest two children are listed in the 1860 census for Chambers, AL. She is listed, along with most of her family by the 1870 census in Smith Co. Texas. Suspect a connection with the "Bacot" line of Alstons in SC, possibly the brother of Samuel Allston (born 1790), both sons of a Joseph Allston, and mother's last name Belin, but have no valid documentation. Any help is appreciated.

Hello. Apparently so. I just found out that the Belins I was referring to in my family are not the same ones someone else was looking for. Keep looking and I did find out that two people recognize the Belins that I am seeking. I had some Belins from Latta South Carolina. I do not know if any are still there and if they are the ones that I am seeking. In the meantime, if you can, provide me with some names and locations of other people and I will see what I know next time. Take care.

Little Jane, Nickname

Hello merby50. How are you today? I saw your message and decided to write to you. Well,Perhaps you can give me all the fill in stuff that you said that I missed. Please help me. I am the granddaughter of Henry Belin the oldest and I have two sisters and a brother. My name is Jane Elizabeth Belin, named after my grandfathers daughter(my aunt), who was named after a sibling from Florida(daughter my grandfather had before he married my grandmother.I believe her name to be or have been Lizzie Bessie Belin. Anyway, I live in Las Vegas with my three children, they are all grown except one and she will turn 17 on May 5. I also am a grandmother now. He is 1. My sister Kim is out here with me and my family(she has no children). My youngest sister Deborah has 3 children too and she still lives in Philadelphia. Our mother Ernestine Hopson passed away in November of 2002. Her sister and our aunt Jane passed away not long after her in about 2004. Cousin Catherine I still sometimes call, I did the other day but, maybe she didn't want to be bothered and she hung up. I will try again soon. My uncle Frank William Scott lives in Maryland with his son, Billy. We don't talk to them because they don't want to be bothered or maybe because my aunt Jane has passed and they are still feeling the crunch. I really don't know why. Well please feel free to write to me and there are so many people that we don't know in our family that hopefully before some more of us pass away we will all get to know one another. It is all so important. Talk to you soon.

Nickname:Little Jane

Jane - all Belins are not related. My Belin grandparents came from Sweden in 1890 and I know all the children. I do not recognize any of your Belins. In my research I have come across a number of Belins from France and also Austria. I thought for awhile my grandfather's ancesters may have immigrated to Sweden from France but no, it turns out my 2nd greatgrandfater was given the name when he was in the Army and he kept it.
Gordon

Hello. I am sorry but, perhaps our lines of communication have somehow crossed. I am a Belin but, what part of the Belin family I do not yet know. I cannot even find my daddy. His name is Fred Bailey. I have not seen or talked to him since I was about 10 to 12 years old. He bought me a bike, a game called,"Operation", and a skateboard. I was not allowed to talk to him. But I keep trying to find him. Our family is Allen, Hopson, Belin, Wells. If you know anything, let me know. Take care for now.

Hello. I am still researching information. I cannot remember there being a John but, I must go to family and ask. There are so many Belin's and are we all related in some way or other? On this side of the Belin family there are, Hopsons, Belins, Allens, Wells. Everyone that is a decentant of the Belin family has had children of their own and some have grandchildren, some have married, there is so much information. Let me see what can be found and I shall return. In the meantime, if you have any more information to add to the Belins history, please add it.Take care for now. By the way, someone wrote to me and said that the original Belins are from France. A name I remember is Lars Belin.Does this ring a bell? Ok. That is all for now.

Hello. I wonder though, if all Belins are related in some way or was Belin a popular name in those previous years. I am kind of confused about it all but, I only know that when I was in grade school, my french teacher told me that my last name was french. I know that my grandfather, Henry Belin had fathered another daughter which lived in Florida. Her name was Lizzie Bessie Belin and her mother owned property which my grandmother, Josephine Belin used to always go to Florida to see this woman before she died. I know she could never take us and it was three of us girls. I remember my grandmother always going to the south too when we were little girls. Again, we could never go but, we used to wait for our grandmother to get back because she would have some pure sugar cane for us. Delicious. Anyways,we have never met the woman that is supposed to be our half sister, and we are still researching the family history too. I know that my grandfather had many brothers. Their names I forgot. My grandmother had a brother which was killed due to a bullet through his eye. He was watching an outside altercation when someone shot a bullet and it hit him dead in the eye. I know that my grandmother lived with her grandparents for some time growing up. I know that I have the same name as my aunt: Jane Elizabeth Belin before she got married. My aunt got her name from the woman that lives in Florida. My grandfather used to be in the service back in the day. My uncle William has the original US flag given to my aunt after my grandfather died. There is so information to give out and if you know of any more, please do give it. We, my sisters and nephew are still acquiring it. Keep on writing if you can add to this tidbit.

I hope you have more family infomation to tell us about. I found out that my grandfather, Henry Belin fathered another child who lives in Florida. We also found some information about that.
Do you have any dates about these two belins and how do you know they were the first? I think they had a sister who lived in new york city named Mary Boudinot. but that was around 1712.

Anways I'm trying to get mine back to the country in which they came from. I believe there is a connection between England and France. But if there is anything you would share that would be great.

And if anyone knows who lewis belin's parents were that seems to be my missing step. He was born in 1800, moved to florida about the time he came to age. Had two children with a woman named Ann Smith and then moved to Bradley county Arkansas adn married a woman named Dorinda. But I don't have a connection from him to anyone specific in South Carolina...Please help

c. belin
