In 1867 he moved with his parents to Jackson county, Iowa, where in 1870, he married Anna Mary Daly, a native of that place, and located on a farm. During a portion of his time he was a messenger for Brig. Gen. H.G. Otis, at the arsenal at Cavite, and he was accorded a public reception in McKee's hall, Oct. 27, 1899, on his return to Fonda. He is now located in South Dakota.
3-Emma Theresa on May 18, 1897, married Charles F. Linnan and lives in Fonda, where he is engaged in the real estate business.
No relation to Belknap.
I inherited a number of books from an uncle. They had been his father's. Same era as your book. All had clippings of some sort regarding information on either the book or author. Some were even autographed. This grand uncle was still clipping articles into the 1950s. Guessing this must have been something book lovers did when they acquired a book.

Colleen Norby

Re: William "Bill" Everett Belknap

My name is Kay Sternberger, and I am an avid reader. Recently I was at a used book store, and purchased a book written in 1898 entitled "A Bird-Lover in the West." Inside the front cover is a book plate dated 5/2/1906 with the name of S. Everette Belknap. I was wondering if this is a relative of yours? I am always fascinated when I see someone else who enjoys books as much as I do. This book plate has a quote on it: "A man never gets so much good out of a book as when he possesses it." I realize this is a random message - but I feel like I have found a message in a bottle and wonder if this gentleman belongs to your family tree. S. Everett Belknap thought enough of the author of the book, an Olive Thorne Miller, to have clipped out a photo of her featured in some sort of magazine. Just wondering who loved this book as much as I did. Thank you for your time.

Hi Bill,

I am researching the Belknap geneology. If William James Belknap was your 5th cousin, then we are related. He would have been my great-grandfather.

I am an adult adoptee who just recently (10 wks tomorrow) found my birth mom (originally a Belknap) and 6 siblings. Since my reunion about 2 weeks ago with my mom, I decided to try to do our family tree on her side & have been WOWed to say the least.

I just found William James Belknaps parents and Isaac L. Belknap's parents - William Belknap & Mary Barnes (along with Cora A. Mathewson's side of the family, too).

Any how, it's always nice to find more "blood" relatives, since I've been without any for 41 yrs.

Rose Gellatly (mom - Bertha Mae Belknap, grandfather - William A. Belknap, great-grandfather William J. Belknap, great-great grandfather Isaac L. Belknap, great-great-great grandfather William Belknap)

Hi Lynn,

I believe I have found William James Belknap's parents & at least 1 sibling.

I found Isaac L. Belknap born Nov. 18, 1851, married Cora A. Mathewson Aug. 13, 1871, and died Mar. 18, 1919. The only other child I found was Earle Winchester Belknap born in 1897.

I believe I also found both Isaac's (William Belknap/Mary Barnes) & Cora's (James W. Mathewson/Julia A. Olney) parents. You can check it out on my tree: Bertha Mae Belknap Jacobs Phillips.

Let me know if this helps. Isaac L. Belknap would have been my maternal great-great-great grandfather on my mother's (Bertha) side of the family.

Email me at rosemary_gellatly@uinet.com or call me at (203) 888-7650/(203) 926-4658.

Hope to hear from you soon.

I guess you meant to reply to Mike, not me? You both are talking about the same Jane Ayers, but there's no reason to think that she's related to my Jane Ayers, who was born and married in CT and didn't come to OH until 1807 (with her husband).

I'm also interested in an Ayer (Ayers) family descended from John Ayer (Ayers, Eyre), who came from Suffolk, England, to Haverhill, Essex, MA, but I haven't traced any of his descendants to Ohio, and I haven't found a link between this family and the Jane Ayers who married David Belknap.

Jane Ayers and David Belknap of CT, VT, and OH

It has come to my attention that the Jane Ayers who married David Belknap in Enfield, CT, on 23 Dec 1790 probably is not the Jane Ayers who was born 5 Jul 1756, Voluntown, New London, CT (as is shown in many family trees). I had wondered about this because of several inconsistencies: (1) Jane would have been too old in 1813 (at 57) to have given birth to their youngest daughter, Aurilla, (2) the 1830 census indicates that Jane was younger than David (who was b. 1760), and (3) Voluntown is not very near Ellington, where David was from, or Enfield, where they married. Recently, I noticed that the Voluntown Jane Ayers is shown by other sources as having married Andrew J. Eliot in 1774 in Voluntown and having a large family with him. A check of FamilySearch IGI shows another Jane Ayers or Eyers ca. 1762 in Enfield or b. 1764 in Ellington who married David Belknap. This Jane would be the right age and from the right part of the state. "Early Connecticut Marriages" also shows a Hannah Ayers being married in Enfield in 1796, who could be from the same Ayers family.

Can anyone shed any light on this? In particular, I haven't seen any sources that definitively linked the Voluntown Jane Ayers to the Jane Ayers who married David Belknap in Enfield; does anyone know of such sources? Or does anyone know of an Ayers family in Enfield or Hartford Co.?

Note: David and Jane went from CT to VT and then to Harrison Co., OH, where both died in 1832.

Did you ever find information on this query? I am trying to determine if she is in my line. If she had a child named Samuel in NY or PA or vicinity, sometime in the 1750s or '60s, then probably so. I am hoping her husband Samuel is the father of the Sam I seek, who moved to KY in the 1780s.

Let me know what you know, & I will be happy to share what I have in any event. -Donald
dcase@uky.edu

Hi,
I think you have supplied some needed information for us :)
My husband's great-great-grandma was Jane Ayers, married to James Lindon on 24 June 1866 in Tuscarawas, Ohio. We also know that they had about 7 children. I have their names, b-days, places, etc that I can give you. I am wondering if the Jane Ayers you have information on was related to this Jane Ayers.

Today I found a Jane Ayers that was born in England. She and her parents, George Ayers & Susan Ayers, who were both 39 in 1860, came from England and lived in Sterling Township, Ohio. This Jane was 19 in 1860.

Hopefully we can help each other shed some light on these people. Thanks.

Seeking information about the family of this Greenville, Michigan Senator (from the late 1800's) and particularly his wife's family.

I just recently came across the information that my ggg-grandparents names were Frederick and Sylvia Rice. They originated in Ohio (at least their oldest daughter, Sylvia was born there) but they raised most of their family in the Greenville/Grand Rapids, Mich. area, where I'm pretty certain my gg-grandfather, George Frederick Rice was born (1855-1939).

In Sylvia A. Rice's obituary (the elder Rice's daughter) it states that her sister is "Mrs. Senator J.W. Belknap. Sylvia was born in 1840, (15 years before her baby brother George), but died in 1886 at the age of just 46, leaving behind her husband George N. Phelps and 8 children. She died at the home of her sister, the Belknaps.

If you believe we have a connection, please reply to me with any information you might have on my Frederick and Sylvia Rice family. Thanks much!!
