The William Bellais you are looking for is my grandfather. He was William Frank or Franklyn Bellais and lived on the Gulf Coast near or in Biloxi. His father was August Albert Bellais, Sr. William Frank or Franklyn Bellais was married to Lydia Magdalena Devereux in 1898 or 18999. They had two children. The first was a girl named Wilamena (sp) who died at age one year. The second child was my father Charles Earl Bellais. Lydia Magdalena (my grandmother) died in 1902 of complications of tuberculosis (consumption as they called it then). My grandfather then married Charlotte King and they had four children, Fred, Frank,Lloyd, and Ralph. As far as I know Ralph is still living and is in California.
William F.
I too am searching for Bellas information. I have an Anna Bellas (married name) in my line. She was my 2nd great grandmother. I have not been able to determine her husband's name. She was born around 1860. Their children were:
SUSAN Bellas
1891 – 1970
Stephen Michael Bellas
1893 –
Mary Rose Bellas
1910 –

Dates are approx. except for Susan's. She was my great grandmother.

If anyone has any information on this family please contact me at Teddi14@gmail.com

I have only a little information on the naval career of Richard Bellass but I have information about his family who moved to Sunderland from Westmorland in the late 1700s. If you would like to have this information please contact me on dillypot@grapevine.com.au

I would be careful about jumping to any conclusions regarding the Bellasys connections. It may be true that the surname is derived from that one but I have succesfully traced back my Bellas line to Sunderland, Co Durham in the 1750's. Going back further than that may be impossible/ difficult but I see no direct link personally yet.

Yes, that is what I currently have down based on records. I have actually managed to find a little more out since I orgiinally made this post.

I have been going through what I can from the Lloyds Captains Register and also a Christie Shipping Register which seems to have the Richard Bellas/Bellass I am after but I am still apreciative of any information. Would love a photo of him or one of his boats if one exists.

Evelyn (nee Bowser) Bellas of PA

I am looking for any information I can find on Evelyn (nee Bowser) Bellas. Her parents are Daniel and Ada Bowser. She was born about 1960 in Kittanning. Her mother Ada Evelyn Bowser death certificate shows Evelyn Bellas as the informant and the funeral home confirmed that Evelyn Bellas was Ada's daughter. I know that some of the Bowser children were sent to an orphange so I am unsure if Bellas is a married name or an adoptive name. I also know that Evelyn's maternal grandfather is Everett McKinley Hoak. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thank You,
Sherry

Captain Bellas/Bellis/Bellass

I was made aware by family members that a Captain Bellis existed in my family tree somewhere. He supposedly ran a ship called the "Florence".

So far, from the sketcky details and using the Census returns it would appear that the surname was probably Bellass or Belles rather than Bellis.

The name Richard Bellas made sense with the family tree and with further surching I seem to have found the gentlemen I was looking for on the Index to the Llyds Insurance Captains Register. Born in 1833 in Sunderland Captain Richard Bellass would appear to be what I am looking for.

I am trying to find more information including trying to get access to the Captains register as I have read it includes a lot more detail than I would be able to find elsewhere but I would also appeal to anybody who has connections to Bellas/Belless in the Monkwearmouth/Bishopweamouth/Sunderland areas as its possible you may know more.

BELLAS - MURLIN in Northumberland Co, PA ca.1800

Hi all,

I just discovered that George Bellas of Bloom Twp, Northumberland Co, PA wrote a will on 21 Feb 1811 which was proved on 20 Nov 1811. In it he mentions his wife Elizabeth and 7 children - 3 daughters Nancy Murlin (the oldest), Sarah and Elizabeth Bellas; and 4 sons Samuel, James, Thomas, and Hugh Bellas.

I am interested in George Bellas' oldest daughter, Nancy Murlin. My Murlin family lived in Fishing Creek Twp in Northumberland County, PA before they moved up to western NY State about 1800. The maiden name of William Murlin's wife Nancy is unknown, but it seems very possible that he could have married in PA before the family moved (he heads a household in the 1800 census in Ontario County, NY with a female age 16-26, and a little girl under age 10).

Is anyone familiar with the George Bellas family? Was his daughter Nancy born between 1774 and 1784, and if so, do you have any suggestions as to where I might find a marriage record for her, presumably in the mid to late 1790s in Northumberland County?

Thanks,
Linda
Durham Bellas Family?

Looking for the family of Isabella Bellas, who married Thomas Burdon 03 May 1746 in St Nicholas, Durham, England.

I have no birth or baptism date, unfortunately, but her husband Thomas was born/baptised 1718.

Their children included John (abt 1761), and possibly Isabella, Ann and Margaret.

Son John married Ann Allison 20 Jul 1783 at St Giles.

I have read that the Bellas family may be related to the Bellasis family (Lords) and have Scottish roots. I have no idea whether my family belongs to these families or not but I am looking for more info. Unfortunately when one gets to these sorts of dates it becomes harder and harder!

I have a James Belles in my tree. I have found census entries for a James H. Belles born abt 1866. These entries are for 1900 and 1910 in Allentown Ward 10, Lehigh, Pennsylvania. He was married to Annie M. and had three sons Harvey, George and Charles. I think he may be my grandfather's brother, as of yet I have not confirmed. Though he might be the James you are looking for. I also have census records from 1930, still in Allentown.

These are the IDs (PAT623_1430-0081, PAT624_1364-0294) of the listings for the 1900 and 1910 records, respectively.

Let me know if this is your guy, I would be interested in seeing what you have on him.
I was actually doing a search about Barbara Bellas, Aunt Betty's daughter that had died from breast cancer. She was young(maybe in the 30's). I also noticed in your posting that you had had a Bellas family reunion in Vancouver. Did Aunt Betty's other daughter, Joanne, attend? There is an old family friend of my mother and Aunt Betty's other sister, Rhea, that lives in Vancouver. Do you know Doris Gould? I have not been able to reach her and she may have passed away.
Tom,

thank you very much for your response , and from a Bellas too!

I do notice the honey pot has declined over the years from millions to thousands though! ;O)

...but yes, that would be excellent if I could somehow get hold of a scan of the article, maybe as a jpg, or a url to an online version, that would be fascinating to read about.

I have scans I can swap with you of newspaper reports of this around the 1850's if you are interested.

I have google email, which holds 1 gig, so if you could send a scan of the article to milesbellas@gmail.com, that would be brilliant. I know our family would love to read about it. Thank you for your response.

-Miles Bellas

William Bellais is my great-grandfather.

His parents were August Albert Bellais (b. 5/13/1840, Normandy, France, died 12/17/1911, New Orleans, LA) and Rachel M. Merritt. They had 4 sons. WIlliam was the youngest.

William Frank Bellais was born March 15, 1873 in Mississippi (Gulf region) and died on October 3, 1937.

His first wife was Magdelene Devereaux (1879-1903). They married on January 28, 1900. They had a daughter and son. The daughter died in childhood. The son Charles Earl Bellais (1901-1990) was my grandfather.

William's second wife was Charlotte King (c. 1890-1937). They married around 1910 and had 4 sons. The youngest Ralph is still alive and living in California.

If you have any more questions about the Bellais family, my new email is labellais@whs.wisc.edu.

Leslie Bellais
May Day? Interesting name. Heard about her, but never heard that he remarried. Wonder if he was divorced from Nannie. Michael's father's name was Peter and he was born in Italy. On his social security card application, Michael listed HIS mother's name as Florence Storan! If that's true, it throws the Storans to the other side of the family -- or a tremendous coincidence, or he and Nannie were related other than by marriage. We've certainly heard Storan and my grandmother's name is Florence. What do you think?

They had four children that much we know for sure. He left and moved to Stamford N.Y. I don't think this helps in your search, but good luck.

Been talking with family (ours) Michael lived in brooklyn for awhile and then left there and moved to stamford township new york. I believe from the 1930 census he was a boarder and owned a Barber shop. I also believe which I am still confirming is that he (married) a woman name May Day also a boarder and worked at the barber shop. I do know that both died in stamford township. I also believe that in 1918 he registered for the draft for WW1. Any other information you have would be great.

My best friend's mom (Joyce Bellas) has just learned that her parents (Michael Bellas 1918 - 1981 and Eleanor Bookman 1918-1959) had a child before her and was given up for adoption. They had a total of 4 children. This sounds very similar to what you are describing. I'm doing the research for my friend. Can you please contact me to let me know if this fits your history OR if anyone has contacted you that might be able to help me. The goal is to find the missing child that was given up for aboption. Believe the child was a girl, though. Thank you.

I was fascinated to read the comprehensive history of the Bellas family as posted by J M Bellas III.
My direct ancestor, John Blackett of Murton, near Appleby in Westmoreland, married a Julian Bellas at Appleby in 1703 and she subsequently became my 9x great grandmother. Presumably she was part of the Bellas family described, who owned lands in that locality.
Can anyone throw light on where she might fit and why the name Julian, now thought of as masculine, was used for a female at that time?

I am endeavouring to identify the Mrs.Bellasis who was a passenger on the "Winterton" when it was wrecked off Madagascar in 1792. Mrs. Bellasis was too ill to accompany the other survivors when they left Mozambique for India, and it is not clear whether she survived. Are there any Bellasis researches who might be able to throw light on this?

A Henry Quin Brownrigg was a passenger who survived.

In the Brownrigg tree there is an Emma Springett, daughter of Emma (nee Bellasis) and Rev. Nathaniel Springett. Emma (mother) was sister of Major-General John Bellasis (1743-1808). Willing to share what I have on this Bellasis family.
Ann Brownrigg
