Re: Pelagie Belle from Wisconsin

Yes she had an afflication, but appears to have been of a temporary condition. The best I can tell you is it was spelled ofrtalmys. The "fr" could be an "h". No idea what the afflication was, but it was labeled as "temporary". It was the 1880 census. She was 28 and single and lived with her stepfather and her mother. I am descended from his first wife, Julia.

The younger children of Julia, were essentially sent to the convents. It was said that it was hard on Pelagie to care for her own children and his from his first union.

Good luck on your search. There is plenty of information out there, since the Belgians of Door County are well-documented.

Lisa

Thanks for your responce. I know that she was the second wife of F. Goffart (Goffard) my grandmother was a Goffard and that is why I am interested. Any information would be appreciated. I was also trying to find out what affliction she had. It was mentioned in a census but am not sure what it was. Some research said she was blind but I don't know if that is true. Thanks

She was the second wife of Ferdinand Goffart (Goffard). But you probably already know that.

You might try looking up Kathleen Race in Wisconsin. She fleshed out that line some time ago. I think I have the Gedcom somewhere for that.

If you are interested, please contact me.

Lisa

Loraine Belle-lived in or near Louisville, KY in 1964 / Born 1920's ?

LORAINE gave birth to my mom in July of 1964 in Louisville, KY. My mom was born as VALONA LEIGH BELLE but her name was changed to Vicky Lefner when she was adopted by the Lefner family who babysat her during the week. One day Loraine never returned, thus the adoption. Loraine worked on some sort of farm/plantation during and after the pregnancy. (possibly because she was young, pregnant and unmarried).
My mom does not know much else since these things were not talked about back then. One thing she does remember though is a "grandmother" type lady whom visited her often while she lived in Louisville, KY.
A few years later the Lefners moved to California and my mom continued to write to the "grandmotherly" lady and even flew back to Kentucky to visit her.
After thinking this through we figure this "grandmother" might be related somehow. Her name was ETHEL BLEDSOE and her husband's name was CLIFFORD. They also had A SON NAMED PAUL. IT IS LIKELY THAT PAUL IS MY MOM'S FATHER.
Anyway, if this sounds familiar to anyone or if you know ANYTHING about LOIRAINE OR HER OTHER CHILDREN (there are others who were adopted out) PLEASE help me to get into contact with them. My mom had a good life with her adopted parents and harbors no hard feelings we just want to put the pieces together after all these years.
