Do you know when your dad was born, and or where? That could help. And yes "Bells" is a quite common pronunciation. One reason why the name Bellis sprouted just as most of the PA Belles came over from Germany in the early 1700's

Anyway I found the history page on our name interesting. I was born in 83 and raised in Lackawanna County, PA. My father's name was also John but he died when I was a toddler. I was raised by my maternal grandparents and my mother was absentee, so I know very little about my dad. I know he worked as a security guard at the University of Scranton for a period of time. I know it's a long shot, but if you think we may share a genealogy please send me a mail or reply. I've always been into history and not knowing the people that made essentially 50% of who I am today never sat well with me. Thanks in advance!

I just received a copy of my 2-great grandmother's death record, and I found multiple census records for her father Nelson and mom Louisa, but I've had no luck on Nelson's parents.

Nelson married Louisa Yetter before 1845 and had Isiah W., Christiann, John H, and Charles E.

He may have also served in the 198th PA Infantry during the Civil War, as Louisa applied for pension.

He spent many years in Jackson, Monroe County, PA, but he appears in Rush, Susquehanna County, PA, on the 1880 census, as a farmer, with son Charles.

Has anyone heard of him? Thanks, and much obliged -

Lee

I have a Nicholas Bellows born about 1814 and living in Yarmouth Twp, Elgin Co., Ontario. He married Ruth Ann Minard 1839 and had 2 sons, William and Isaac. We are descended from Isaac. Supposedly Nicholas was born in USA. There is also a Samuel, William and Nicholas Belles appearing in Walpole Twp, Haldimand Co., Ont. They all migrated to US by 1840. Don't have parents of Nicholas. Do you ?

Hi , This information came to me from discussions and research that Peggy Carey and I have done and I think others .
Daniel Belless : parents
Henrich/Henry Belles b.1767 place unk. but either Penn. or N.J. death date and place unk. maybe Ill. or MO. I have found him , Daniel and Nicolas on the census of 1840 and 1830 living the areas of Indiana . There are at least two older bros.:Joseph b1801 Penn.
And Wilhelm or William b 1800 . These traveled together to Ill. and at least visited Mo.
Grandparents :
Wilhelm Belles or more properly Bellesfelt
m. Christina Lasley . I have several pages of confusing information that shows that Wilhelm was born in Germany called Neuwied on the Rhine .
I also have a Wilhelm Bellowsfelt being naturalized on Dec. 3 , 1744 along with an Adam and Peter . The naming conventions of the time gave the name of Johann to almost every male in a family . Usually they were called by the middle name and over the years the Johann was dropped entirely . Just shows up to confuse us today . Like I said this confusing and some conjecture . However by close study of the census and other records I think this the right track .Only more research will resolve this . Thanks Jack

Like i said I have the info . I think you were the ones who who were so very kind and sent it to me when I lived out in the country . Sorry for the confusion . I have Daniel's parents and grand parents(I think) . It was a bit of deduction from several sources and appears reliable . It traces the family back to Penn. , N.J. and names a town in Germany where they came from . If your already have that please dis regard . Many Thanks Jack and Susan .

Yes . Ihave that info. . He either had a wife before Elizabeth or she had been married as there was a son shown on the 1850 census that was 10 at the time . The first child they had together was born in 1851 and died in 1853 . Their second , James H. , was born in 1853 . I have info on his siblings and some other info. , familiy stories and such . Most of these were given to my dad and grandmother by great aunt Viola when we visted her in Ill. She and her daughter and son-in-law were the last permanent residents of Duncan's Mill . This area has been the center for the family for many generations . I have even down-loaded a township map from the 1890's that shows where several of the family lived and where many families that became in-laws lived . It is of the Pleasant township in Fulton county . Let me know and I will try to send it . Thanks Jack and Susan

Thank you , I didn't have that . I have two dates for Nicholas . One in 1864 on the same day his son Nicholas , Jr. was born in Missouri and one in 1874 in Illinois . I found a Nicholas in Ill. on the 1870 census but with a different family . His wife is shown on the 1880 census as a widow living with her son James H.( my greatgrandfather )and the minor children . They are in Ill. . I have tried to confirm either date to no avail . I have not been able to travel to Ill. and check recods there . It seems they didn't start registering deaths until later . In Missouri the family is shown as Bellows on the census . I may have told you that before . Any way thanks Jack and Susan

Yes , I had that except for the cause of death . He also appears on either the 1850 or 1860 census as living with the Duncan family as a miller . The name is given as Bellows . That is one of the more common (mis)spellings . I know that he had a mill in Missouri until he left due to the war . I don.t have anything on him while he was in Kansas until he met up with the family and moved on to Montana . His uncle , my ancestor Nicholas , was supposed to have served during the war but I can find nothing on that . I think Aquilla's father , Daniel , died during the 1860's . I have not found a date or a place of burial . I looked at the cemetary rosters that I could find in their area and found some Belless names and some that had been married and had their spoues name . We still haven't moved . I think the rain is waiting until then .We live in Texas . Jack and Susan

Hi Jessica ,
I am the GGGrandson of Nicholas Belless . He is the uncle of Aquilla , by the way Aquilla is not his name , it was Albert Quillas Belless . I think he signed things A.Quillas and over the years the period was lost . In several census papers I find the name is most often given is Bellows . I think the change to Belless occured about the time of the first census in 1790 . This the time I find changes from one to the other . I think nicholas's father was Henry or Heinrich . His father was william or Wilhelm . As you can see the change from German to English has caused some confusion . Good to hear from you Jack

I think we may have been looking at some of the same information. I also saw some of the name variations in the census information. I have a pretty good idea on their parents but as yet not confirmed and at least one of the other folks looking at Belles info had found something similar. I still haven't finished unpacking all my genealogy info but I'll try to get to it pretty soon. I'm living just outside Nacogdoches in the small community of Douglass.

I don't if I told you , but I live in Texas also . I live in Arlington , wich is between Dallas and Ft. Worth . I have a few new things on the family history and I hope a lead on the parents of Nicholas and Daniel . This is information sent to me and what I have found by wading through the census forms from 1830 back . The Belless name has had some wild changes over the years . The original name was Bellesfelt . All of the changes appear to have been made by the way different chronicalers heard the word . It has varied from Bayless to Bowlus to Bellows to Belliss and everything in between . I also have the ability to send and receive faxes now . More later Jack

Hi Larry , I don't remember if we have gone back and forth for a while . I saw on another site that you had found information on Nicholas and Daniel in Missouri . I had found similar ,but could not verify . I did look at the cemetary sites and could not find either one at any cemetary . My information has Nicholas as having died 1874 in Illinois . I found a Nicholas belless in Fulton county on the 1870 census . He is shown as Beless but when I looked at the page it was Belless . The problem is the approx. birth date and the spouse's name . Further reseach is needed . Ley me know if you recieve this Jack Belless
