I'm trying to find info for my mother-in-law on her Bellew family from Harrison County, Mississippi. She has given me names to search: Julia Bellew who married Elbert House and Kate Bellew who had children with a Mr. Saffold but never married. She has heard that her family originates from Ireland and prehaps Scotland. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!

This Reason Bellew was the son of George and Amanda Bellew and I think this George's father was Jacob Bellew...
I can't find the father of George S. Bellew who was married to Sarah Hilburn...
But my great grandmother, Elizabeth Bellew was the daughter of George and Sarah... and she married Thomas J. Woods in Greenville, SC... (the same family that Reason Bellew was living with) I wondered if the two Georges were first cousins, sons of two brothers....
I am wondering if George S. Bellew is the son of David Bellew, because he named his first son, David...

Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks Betty

Thomas Bellew

Born SEpt 10, 1862 ? probably St. Clair Alabama and died November 10, 1899. Buried in Upper Camp Creek Cemetery, SEq. County, Oklahoma (then Indian Territory) He is the only Bellew buried up there and is in the Harvell plot. The Bellews were connected with the Harvell and Potter families. W. D. Harvell married first to Elizabeth Potter and then after her death he married her sister. I would like to connect this Thomas Bellew someway to our genealogy if possible. He isn't listed on any of the Federal census that I can find? He is buried at the foot of my Grandfather, Thomas J. Harvell born in Tennessee in 1858. He married Lucy L. Green Harvell in Roseville, Arkansas in 1883. I cannot find a trace of her before her marriage.
Any help would be appreciated!

Gertie28

Hello,
I would love to help you with your search on Reason and his parents but I don't have much concrete information on them. I do have Reason Anderson Ballew as the son of George Bellew. George was born in 1815 in South Carolina and married Amanda. That is all I have on George and Amanda. I do have George's parents as Jacob James Bellew and Mary Polly Gosnell. This is all the information that I have so far. I'm sorry that I'm not able to help further.
I believe there were two George Bellews... One who in the 1850 census was listed as G. S. Bellew... and the other as George with Reason... (Maybe they were cousins, but not sure.)
My great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Wood/Woods married Elizabeth Bellew, daughter of G. S. Bellew. They (Thomas J. Wood/Woods and Elizabeth) moved to Blount Co., TN between 1866-1867, then on to Chattooga Co., GA in the early 1890s... They both died in Chattooga Co., GA in the 1920s...
Never heard of any of their family moving to Ark..

Hi Shelley -

I am doing a similar search on Reason Bellew - born 1841. I see him in the 1850 census living with his parents George & Amanda in Greenville, SC. However, I am having trouble pinning down more information about his parents.

I believe that George may be the son of Jacob Bellew, also living in Greenville, SC during the 1850 census next door to several Bellews. However, when I try to dig into George via other searches, I keep getting a George that was married to Sarah Hilburn - NOT Amanda - and they have a whole host of other children - NOT Reason. These children have similar birthdates, but completely different names. So, I don't think that Sarah was a second marriage. This leads me to believe there may have been two George Bellews living in Greenville at the same time, both born around 1815. There seems to be a lot of research out there on the George Bellew that was the son of Jacob, but I'm not just confident that this is the Reason Bellew's father line. Any assistance would be appreciated.

As a follow-up to Betty's posting - to me - it looks like Reason lived with the Woods family in 1860 per the census and married their daughter, Mary Woods shortly thereafter. Some time between 1860 & 1870, the Woods family and Reason Bellew family moved to Tennessee and then on down to Arkansas. I was able to trace these families through the census.

Hi Betty,
I don't know if this is the same Reason Bellew or not. There are some similarities.I have 3 different Reason A. Bellews in my files but this is the only one that is close to what you have.

Reason A. Bellew born Sep 07, 1841 in South Carolina
married Mary Evalin Woods Jul 08, 1860 in South Carolina.

Mary E. Woods is the daughter of Thomas & Julia Woods.

Reason & Mary had children:
Julia
Margaret Ann "Meg"
Mary Jane
William T. "Will"
Lenoir "Nora" L
Emma Elizabeth
Delia Alice
Josephine Eugenia "Josie"

Mary is the only child I have so far of Thomas & Julia. Reason's parents are George & Amanda Ballew.

If this looks familiar I would love to talk more and be happy to send you any information that I have. Please email me directly at sdlewis16@comcast.net

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Shelley

I have a Bird Bellew listed as a great uncle in a Belew family bible. Sounds promising. Do you have any other names--there are 11 sibling names--great great grandfather is Thomas married to Matilda which is where I am stuck.

Time again for my yearly post in search of Uncle Hugh. Hugh Bellew was born in 1916 in Preston England. He came to the US in 1926. He was the son of John and Margaret (McCann) Bellew. The family lived in Rhode Island during his younger years where he graduated from the School of the Holy Trinity in Central Falls. In later years he resided in Adams / North Adams Massachusetts. The last time the family heard from him was sometime in the 1950s and it is believed at that time he was in the Chicago area. His family is very interested to find out what became of him.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, please contact me!

Hi,

My Bellew relatives came from Staleen, Donore. My gggrandmother was Mary Ann Bellew (father John Bellew). She married Christopher Neary and they lived in the lock-keepers cottage. One of their children Jane Neary lived in the cottage until her death sometime in the 1960's or 1970's. She had a brother Christopher Neary who is buried in Donore Hill Cemetary together with John and Margaret Bellew and their children William, Patrick, and Mary. I assume that Christopher was directly related to this Bellew family but i have been unable to find out how.
My mother remembers a John Bellew living close by. He was the son of Laurance Bellew and Kate Mulvaney and died also in the 1960's. As Staleen is not a big place and there seemed to be a number of Bellews around i assume that they were all related in some way.

Any information that you can provide would be very welcome.

Catherine

Patti's original messagementioned Lawrence, Thomas, John , William & Patrick Bellew as brothers from County Meath, Parish Donore, Location Staleen who left Ireland in the 1800's. The William was her great grandfather who married a Julia. Sounds like it could be the same William as yours. Do you have any more information as my Bellews also came from Staleen which is a tiny place. My great great grandfather was John and i know that living there at the same time were Laurance, William, Patrick and Thomas .
Florence Carpenter

Marie (b: 21 FEB 1919 in Kentucky, d: 4 FEB 1989) m: Sterling A. Holbrook

Upon Abinadia's death, A.D. remarried to his step-sister Arey Mentie Stewart (b: 15 DEC 1896 in Kentucky, d: 15 FEB 1983 in Mayfield, Graves, Kentucky) on 15 DEC 1923. The children of this union were:

Alfred Delmer (b: 21 SEP 1924 in Kentucky, d: 23 SEP 1924 in Kentucky)

Belva Lee (b: 3 FEB 1926 in Kentucky, d: 3 AUG 1991 in Fulton, Fulton, Kentucky) m: Okey Victor Crockett 9 JUN 1941

Alfred Delmer (b: 5 MAY 1928 in Kentucky, d: 18 AUG 1994 in Mayfield, Graves, Kentucky)

Andrew Jackson (b: 18 SEP 1929 in Kentucky, d: 24 JUL 1994 in Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona)

James Edward (b: 18 SEP 1929 in Kentucky, d: 18 DEC 1930 in Ironton, Lawrence, Ohio)

John Wesley (b: 18 SEP 1929 in Kentucky, d: 12 JAN 1991 in Mayfield, Graves, Kentucky)

Elza Leroy (b: 4 DEC 1931 in Kentucky, d: 23 APR 1951)

There were 3 additional children of this union, who to the best of my understanding are still living. Their names are William, Grace, and Mary. Additionally, Arey brought a son to this marriage, Frank Gallion (spelling?) who seems to have been adopted by A.D. as his name in the 1930 census and obituary was listed as "Frank Bellew".

I wish I could give more information on my grandfather but he wasn't actively involved in my life. However, my mother may be able to provide some memories of her early childhood in Virginia.

If can be reached via e-mail at speedy47 [at] gmail.com, or you're welcome to check out my research at http://genealogy.bellew-campbell.org
