Binyard (African American)

I am looking for information on my ggg grandmother Dorcas Binyard. The earliest information I have on her is the 1880 census as being married to Neptune Finley. She had four children, Lucinda, John, Janie and Neptune. From her death certificate (Dorcas Finley)and family stories, she was from Beaufort, SC. Her death certificate also shows that her parents were James and Hannah Binyard. Researching James and Hannah, it seems they had several children but Dorcas is never listed. I also know that she had an aunt named Phebe Kelson and James and Hannah had a son named Sam Kelson. Unfortunately, I haven't found a connection. My aunt has told me that she believes Dorcas had a sister that she called Clo. If any of these names sound familiar, please contact me as soon as possible. I have a family reunion coming up and would like to present info.

There was also Lillian, Ruth, Cecelia died at a young age, Louisa, Philomena, Julian died in childhood, and Harry. Only Harry had children.

My ancestors are from Lockhart Texas. Edmond Bellinger married a Louisa Ammey. Their second born was Charlotte Bellinger. Charlotte Bellinger married a John Chiles from Missouri. John and Charlotte had I think about 8-9 children. Cornelia Mae Chiles was one of their daughters. Cornelia Mae Chiles married a Clarence Washington. They had three sons. Charlie Bellinger the political leader of San Antonio was an Uncle to Cornelia Mae Washington. Out of all of Charlie's children, only one son had children. If I'm not mistaken Charlie only had 3 grand children. Two are still living in Houston TX. Patricia Bellinger Charlton recently passed away on November 7, 2008. If you like, I can send you her Obituray. Now there are only 2 grand kids left of Charlie Bellinger of San Antonio. I have heard that they are Shultz's in the family. They were German. I have a picture that has "Momma Shultz" written on the back. If you like I can send your a copy of it. I was able to talk with my mother's first cousin before she passed away and she gave me a family tree of the Washington side of the family. It seems that Ida Washington (Clarence Washington's)sister was the one who married a Willie Shultz. So the Shultz seem to be on the Washington side not the Chiles side. Do you have any old family photos that you would be willing to share with us. I am apart of an e-mail group of descendants of Edmond and Louisa Bellinger we share new information and pictures as we get them. Looking forward to your reply.

Hi Lyn
Great to hear from you. Many thanks. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.
I'm pleased you have found more information re.your family. I have often wondered if James m. Mary Moir was a brother or relative to my ancestor John (also born FORGIE) m Janet LAWSON Dunbar parish,Co. Haddington 1775. But there seems to be no known James in my family tree so far. I also have a spelling variation of FERGIE in my tree.)
I know of some one who is also researching your ancestors, so I will forward your reply to him. He is descended from Alexander (s/o Janet Lumgair & John Fargie I think.)Some of Janet & John's children visited NZ & came here to live. John Jnr m Janet MacLaggan.)A Thomas came to live here briefly. He went to Dunedin and Wanganui where John and Alexander respectively lived, so it seems likely he was a brother too. There are also Forgie's in NZ, whose ancestors came from Stirling.
The FARGIE/ FORGIE/ FERGIE's are interesting to research.
Regards
Jill

Jill,
Thanks for responding to my post. This is new information that you have supplied about Janet's father being Alexander(Joiner) and not James (Gardener). The residence at the time of marriage is also interesting. It makes me question whether I have linked our Janet to the wrong branch of the Fargie/Fergie/Forgie family. I have never seen the full marriage record only an index.

I know from his widow's will that James Fargie, gardener, who m Mary Moir also had daughters Janet and Helen, so it is easy to get confused.

Do you have Alexander Fergie( Joiner)'s wife? I have Elizabeth Lawson. Is that the right set of parents? Do you have any other siblings for Janet and Helen? I think I need to do a more thorough dig of my notes and references to see if I straighten this out. It may take me a little while, but I will get back to you.

Chris
His great-grandfather was Henry Bellinger; so he represents the fourth generation of this branch of the Bellinger family in this State. J.C. Bellinger is a native of East Bloomfield, Ontario county, N.Y., where he was born in 1866. Although but a young man, he is one of the bright business men of the town. July 1, 1891, he entered into partnership with J.R. Newell. He had formerly been a clerk in the same business. In politics he is a Republican.

source:
History of Herkimer County, New York : illustrated with portraits of many of its citizens
edited by George A.
I am a Fargie descendant and very interested in your post. From a microfilm of the St Cuthberts parish record of the marriage of Janet Fargie and James Bellinger, Janet was the daughter of ALEXANDER Fargie (joiner)and she was residing at 9 Romilly Place, Edinburgh at the time of her marriage - 16 July 1830. A Helen Fargie was also residing at the same address when she married Thomas Clark on 23 Feb, also in 1830. Her father was also Alexander, but a wright. I assume the two girls were sisters or possibly cousins. Rev Andrew Thomson was the minister for both marriages. I would be interested in your comments and your source of information Any help you can pass on about Janet and James descendants would be great.(Their children have similar names to my Fargie tree.)
Jill
Hi Chris

Isn't it great how Ancestry. Com sends reply alerts? I thought I might have to wait ages before you would see my message.

I think you may have linked Janet to the wrong family, but I'm not absolutely sure that I have the right Alexander either. Unfortunately the mother's names aren't given on the marriage records at that time. Did James Fargie and Mary Moir have a child Alexander? If so, born when & where ? At this stage, I have claimed Janet and Helen with a ? next to their names as they seem very probable. However, there were also other Alexander Fargie's/Fergie'/Forgie's around, so..?? (It's also possible they were all related.I agree! It is difficult sorting them.)
Alexander was the son of John Fargie/Forgie/Fergie and Janet Lawson married Dunbar Parish, County Haddington, 13 Feb 1775.( I can give you J&J's other children if you wish.)
Alexander was born 3 May 1879, at Whitekirk and Tynningham Parish, County Haddington. He died 4 Jan 1860 aged 71, at 48 Buccleuch St, St Giles, Edinburgh. His wife Elizabeth(d/o Robert Lawson and Helen Heriot)died aged 82yrs, 29 Sept,1859 at 22 Clarence St, St George, Edinburgh.
Their children were
1. My GGG/F Robert, born 22 Jan 1815, died 22 March 1873.He married Elizabeth Maclennan Alison, 12 Dec 1838 at Edinburgh St Cuthbert's. They had 4 children.
2. John, born 4 Nov 1907, bap 9 Jan 1808. I cannot trace him.I thought he may be John Fargie who married Janet Lumgair at Edinburgh, St Cuthberts c 1827 and went to Australia but after researching, apparently not. Can you (or anyone else help with John born Nov 1907?)
3. William, was the informant of his father's death and was probably the witness at his brother's (?) marriage. His occupation was a Mason. I have no further information about him. Again - a number of possibilities, but which one?? Can you or any one help?

I wonder if you know anything about Thomas Clark - Helen Fargie's husband?

I hope I've given you something useful and interesting. Looking forward to reading further posts from you.

Jill
Hi Chris,
Yes you and I both have linked Janet to the wrong person. According to Mary Fargie nee Moir's will Janet was not married. She was living with her mother at the time of Mary's death. She signed the will as Janet Fargie. It can be so confusing especially with the Fargie's all naming their children by the same names. Sorry you are not directly related but we still could be remotely.
I believe too that Helen was not married either.
All the best with your research.
regards
Lyn from Oz

Hi Jill,
I have now found out that my John Fargie who married Janett Lumgair was indeed James Fargie & Mary Moir's son not Alexander Fargie & Janet Lawson as was first thought. He was actually born as a Forgie
John Forgie born 1803 Christened 17 October 1803 Muiravonside Stirling Scotland as was his brother James born 1805 same place. They were some of the children of James Fargie & Mary Moir. Thomas Fargie born 1808 to James & Mary came to Australia just after John died perhaps to help with Janett and her children. He was a schoolteacher in Scotland and for a while in Geelong when he arrived. He married in Australia had one child who died in infancy. No other children. Your John Fargie was born later.
Hope this clears up things a bit better.
warmest regards
Lyn from Oz

Thanks for communicating about Martin Jorski, my 2nd great-uncle. Is it possible your husband is related to the Bellinge line? Martin married an Emma Bellinge in 1885. My records show they had eight children. Martin's parents are my 2nd great-grandparents. Their oldest child was Marianna Jezewski(name later changed to Jorski by the sons that stayed in the west). Yes, I am well familiar with the line, however I never expected to find the name Bellinger in S. Carolina to be apart of my line. I would love to learn more about the Bellinges and would be happy to share what I have about the Jezewski/Jorski line for your research.

I am presently writing my second family history for publish. It will combine my father's side (Bethke/Huebner/Kellner/Pecher)and my mother's side (Jezewski/Korynta/Zinda/Konieczka, etc.).

Looking up my records here all I have in front of me is Emma's Parents and siblings and that is quite setchy from the 1880 census.

Appreciate hearing from you. I live in Nibley, Utah, however I am a Wisconsin native.

Yours, Carole M. Bethke Wright

I apologize for this all running together but it wouldn't let me use html to skip lines :(

This is what I have on Isaphene:

Isaphene Delphene Culver born Feb. 13, 1849, Cherry Flats, PA Tioga Co. died Dec 20 1929 Wellsboro, PA, Tioga Co.
Isaphene was the daugher of Asahel and Phebe Ann Lane Culver. She was the sixth child of 6 known children in that family. Her brothers and sisters were Parmena?, Cornelius 1831, Vihemus 1836-1934, Evelyn 1841, Sylvinia 1845.
In the 1850 census Isaphene was recorded in her father's family as Josephine age 1, born in PA. In the 1860 census she is recorded as Isaphene, age 11.

Isaphene married probably approx. age of 20 to Henry Baldwin who was the son of Anson and Sally Baldwin. Anson Baldwin age 70 is in the 1870 census living in Mansfield Boro with wife Sally age 62, Isaphene is living there but she was again recorded as Josephine, age 21, along with her son Charles age 5 mo, who was born in June 1870. Her husband Henry was not recorded.

Isaphene and Henry Baldwin had 3 children that we know of:
Charles b. June 1870 d. 1934
Lewis b. 1871 d. 1880?
Frederick b. 1875 d. 1880?
(I have a photo copy of Lewis's tombstone which states his year of death as 1879 - however .. both boys show up in the 1880 census so it is believed that the year is wrong on the stone. Both boys died from diphtheria.

Isaphene divorced Henry Baldwin Feb. 4, 1877, the reason is unknown.

Norman Bellinger married Isaphene after his first wife Fanny Smith died. Isaphene was 29 years old.

The 1880 census shows Isaphene with Norman along with 2 of her children (thus we assume the tombstones for the boys are in error). Her son Charles Baldwin does not show up living there - he would have been about 8 years old at the time.

Family legend carried down through the years and the story told by Mrs. Edward Johnson who was a granddaughter of Norman claimed that diphtheria took the lives of Frederick and Lewis. It was said that both died in the arms of Norman and that their remains were taken out an upstairs window because the disease was considered to be very contagious.

Norman and Isaphene had 2 children together - Nina b Dec 12, 1879 and Jessie in 1885.

Isaphene died age age 80 (I have copy of newspaper clipping which states) Mrs. Isaphene Bellinger, 80, died at her home here Friday at 5 pm. She was the widow of Norman H. Bellinger and was born Feb 13, 1849. Surviving are two daughers, Mrs. Harry Davenport and Mrs. Edward Wilsey, both of Wellsboro, and Charles Baldwin, a son by a former marriage. Burial was in the Wellsboro Cemetery.
