I believe somewhere along the line we are somewhat relative. There is a bossibility that they are cousins.
My grandfather, Samuel Bellis was born in 1852.
I am trying to research the Bellis heritage but I always come to an end. I am still trying. I'm retired and do nothing just research the family connections.

I requested Sony Capulong to ask Adrienne if she can furnish me copy of the Bellis family tree Adrienne sent to her.

Hopefully I can find something.

How did it came about he went to the Philippnes. His live, business and love stories.

I know a lot of this because when I was young he would come and visit my mother and me at least 3 or 4 times a week and stayed with us. He liked to play with me like pretending he took my nose. I had fun with him. I have the Bellis nose and eyes. Just like your uncle Amos, Uncle Edward and other siblings except Maria Cristina and Edwin, we have the same features of a Bellis.

Your Tita Mirian

I don't like to post it because it's personal

Your Tita Mirian.

Since we are sharing fun stories. My grandmother, Mary, was a bit of a pack rat. Hence, this is why we have photos to share now. I can remember that she has these metal wash tubs in the middle bedroom of her house filled to the brim with letters from the whole family. She never threw anything like this out. I discovered them as a child when I was collecting old stamps. I have to say I am probaby responsible for destroying some of the old envelopes for looking for collectible stamps. I ended up with the original marriage certificate for Thomas and Ellen. I can't believe that is still around. Thanks to Mary and my mom, we now can keep these little treasures. Do you know any stories about Thomas Bellis before they came to America? Do you know anything about their coal mining business in the U.S.? Just wondering how far back the family stories go. I have a few I can share.

I am so glad you like the pictures. I actually had forgotten what things I had collected for my family history book. I actually have some pretty good items in there. I really think all of you will find them as interesting as we have. We had so many fires in Texas last year with all the 105 degree temperature it is a wonder our house didn't burn up. We live on 5 acres in Wimberley, Texas and our neighbor decided to light off his scrub burn pile and just about burned up the entire neighborhood including our home. This is a good reason to get these documents posted to Ancestry.com There are lot more pictures that Bill has so I am sure we will have plenty of material to look at. Will send more your way.

Sarah

They said that my great grandmother Cora was revered "Mother Ake" and was always spoken in deep tones and from the picture you can tell. My dad and uncle remember going to Orlando to visit and they said they got to see a sking show while there. They were really excited that we found each other.
I am sending a PDF file to your personal email.
Nicole

The picture I had in my Bellis Family History book has a picture of 4 out of the 5 Bellis sisters. At least this will give you something for now. The big picture we have has all 5 of the sisters. Sarah is missing from this picture. Daughters of Thomas Bellis and Ellen Lamb.

Left: Florence
Top: Maud
Right: Mary
Bottom: Cora

Sarah Barlow

Hi, Nicole. I added you to a contributor if you wish to access the information on the Bellis tree. You will be able to find Cora's branch on the tree. I filled in a little bit and maybe you can complete the information correctly. You may find more information there than you have.

I am as thrilled as your dad and you must be to find a direct relative. I can relate to the hurricane thing your dad went through. My brother, Bob and his wife Iris went through Hurricane Ike and they had a massive clean up on Galveston Island in 2008. We both own retail gift shops and their shop, The Front Parlor took on 23" inches of water. It took from Sept. 2008 until Feb. 2009 to get them back in business. My husband, Steve and I own, The Cedar Chest in Wimberley, Tx. I started this business 16 years old before I left IBM. Steve and I worked there for over 30 years each.

Bill said he would round up the photos and let me start working with them. He located the large picture of Sarah, Maud, Cora, Mary and Florence. I even have some of the Bellis jewelry that Thomas Bellis had made in England. Martha Whitmore gave me the jewelry before she passed away.I think we have some picture of Thomas in the collection as well. I have looked at them in years but will go through them and see about getting them organized. I know you would probablly appreciate seeing what I can produce. With all the wierd weather, probably a good idea to get them posted to ancestry.com to protect them.

Sarah Barow

Hi, Jayne. I represent the Bellis family in the U.S. We can go back as far as Robert Bellis (1827-1895) from Wales. Robert married Elizabeth Lewis (1819-1854). They had 3 children: Alice, John and Thomas (Feb. 1, 1851 Buckley, d. 20 Nov. 1910) in Pennsylvania, US. Thomas Bellis married Ellen Lamb and they had 6 children: Sarah, Enoch, Mary, Cora, Ellen & Martha. They lived in Virginia and Pennsylvania. The Bellis family owned a coal mine in Wales, sold it and moved to Virginia.

Would you happen to recognize any of these names? My grandmother was Mary (Bellis) Hodgkinson.

Thanks,

Sarah Barlow
cedarchest@austin.rr.com
Wimberley, Texas

I spoke with my dad this morning and he couldn't believe it. He remembers going on family trips to Orlando to visit his father's Aunt Mary and Uncle George. My grandfather John was a very tall man about 6'4. He past away in 1976 from cancer that started in the liver but eventually took over his body. My father joined the Air Force and was a pilot who did three combat tours during Vietnam. Once he got out of the service he moved to New Orleans to attend Graduate School at Tulane. Here in New Orleans is where he met my mother and married her. I came along not long after and was raised in New Orleans. I took after my dad and joined the Air Force and spent eight years active duty living in Montana, Colorado Springs and Navarre, FL. During this time I married and had three children. My husband and I left the service and went to work for the Dept of Homeland Security in New Jersey. A few months ago my husband and I also opened a snoball shop.

In 2005 my parents lost their home in Katrina and started a new life in Tampa. About a year ago my husband and I got transfered here to Tampa as well. It is nice to now be around family.

I have always wanted to know more about my families history. My dad was so excited to hear that we had made contact. He has many memories of their trips to Orlando to see your grandmother Mary.

I was unable to send the documents today but I will get them to you, I promise. Also I don't have any pictures so even scans would be great!

nicole.hair@hotmail.com
813-992-7689

-Nicole

I forgot to ask you where you family is living. We are all located in Texas. My grandmother, Mary Bellis (Hodgkinson) married George Jenks Hodgkinson and moved to Orlando, Florida where they started a dairy which they later closed. When my mother, Mary Jane married she lived around Orlando and when she remarried it was to Willis Knight who was in the Air Force. My grandmother, Mary, stayed in Orlando and off we went to Sembach, Germany for four years. It was terrible leaving Orlando. We came back after the tour of duty was over and moved back with my grandmother, Mary. Willis (Bill) was transferred to Austin, Texas to Bergstrom Air Force base so that is how we ended up in Texas. We brought my grandmother, Mary Hodgkinson with us and she passed away in Austin and she was buried in Orlando, Fla at the Greenlawn cemetery.

I have always enjoyed working on the family history. I will admit that it is an on and off thing with me and have researched several lines for my direct family (johnson) on my father's side, grandfather (hodgkinson) and grandmother (bellis). My mother, Mary Jane (Hodgkinson) married Dudley Milton Johnson. You may have found by now that it is hard to find much on the Bellis side of the family. It is will be very interesting to hear the things that have been passed down on your side of the family. I have enough information that we can have fun comparing notes. I wish my mother was still here so she could tell us more but she passed away about thirteen years ago. You will find that I have a brother and sister, so you have more cousins out there as well. One lives in Thorndale, Texas and the other in Galveston, Texas. Robert Dudley Johson (Bob) is in Galveston and Mary Elizabeth (Knight) Hall lives in Thorndale. My mother, Mary Jane (Hodgkinson) remarried Willis Mathew Knight and they had a child, thus Mary Elizabeth Knight. Still a direct relative on the Bellis side. She goes by Elizabeth. Elizabeth has four children and Bob has two. Bob is now a grandfather, so there are a few more to add to the list. My step father, Willis (Bill) is 83 so he is around and has my mother pictures at the house just three minutes from here. We have one picture hanging on the wall in one of the bedrooms that has all the Bellis sisters. I can remember this picture forever because they are all dressed in white and look like nurses.

Hi, Jennifer. Sounds like we are cousins. My grandmother was Mary (Bellis) Hodgkinson. She married my grandfather, George Jenks Hodgkinson. They lived in Orlando, Florida. There only child was Mary Jane Hodgkinson, my mother. If you can fax me information my fax number is (512) 847-9049. My email is cedarchest@austin.rr.com Home number is (512) 847-6015. I am almost certain that your grandfather made a trip to visit my grandmother in Orlando around the early 1950s. I was a small child then and if I remember, he was a big man. Did he not pass away from heart attack right after that? My grandmother, Mary would have been John's, Aunt Mary if I an correct. I would love to exchange information with you and compare notes. I have a number of family records and pictures.

It certainly seems in Cheshire that Bellis started around the early 1600,s (from Familysearch. The earliest Bellis wills in the Cheshire wills database covering 1492 to 1940 are two at Chester in 1693 and 1699 and one at Nantwich in 1689. Looking at the PCC wills in National Archives the earliest is Edward Bellis, yeoman of Allington, Denbighshire. Judging by the frequency of the name it is not particulaly old in Cheshire. I agree with your view that the majority of Welsh Bellis' will be related and would suggest that extends to those in Cheshire. Have you considered dna testing yourself out of interest?

Hi,
My interpretation from my research of my family is that although the Welsh surname ELLIS is widely distributed throughout Wales the Bellis Surname (ap Ellis ,"Son of Ellis") is concentrated around Wrexham (about 90% are within this small area) I'm confident that although the records are sparse the majority of the Welsh Bellis' will be related. The Bellis surname starts to appear around 1600's whilst Ellis has been around for ages. With the close proximity of Cheshire and the closing of Welsh mines etc. the Bellis families did move around seeking work and as with my lot arrived at the Durham coalfields in the mid to late 1800's.

I have an open mind on this and have limited knowledge about the age of the surname Bellis as opposed to Bellas.
It would be interesting to know how far back in time the Bellis name goes in both Cheshire and Wales and the level of concentrations of the name. I can see it is sometimes spelt Bellyse (at least in Cheshire) or perhaps this is another different name altogether?

David Hall

Hi,
I believe the Bellis Surname is of Welsh decent and derived from Ap Ellis ie son of Ellis.
Bellas is probably the English deriviative of the Norman names you have researched. Apart from errors in transcription I believe the two surnames are not related.
Regards

Colin Bellis

I am helping to research connections between the Bellas and Bellasis (and variants)families, some of which go back to Norman times and are well recorded.
Recently I learnt from reading "The Battle Abbey Roll" (in the additional names given by Duchesne in volume three), it is stated that a younger branch of the "Belasye" family migrated to Cheshire. I do not know how true this is but the name can be spelt in various ways and so I wondered if Bellis is a variation on Bellas/Bellasis? Bellasyse goes back to Norman times. I suppose the only way to find out is by dna testing and so I am helping with a dna project for any male Bellis's or Bellas's etc who may be interested.
David Hall, Coventry.

Bellis (1822-1900) & Elizabeth Frances Bellis (1834-1878)

s/o Philip Bellis (1794-1852) and Mary Brown (1791-1870)

Elizabeth Frances Bellis was d/o Jacob Bellis (1790-1870) and Susannah Baker (1806-1872). The relationship between Philip and Jacob Bellis is not proven but they were most likely brothers or cousins. It is unknown who their fathers were but Philip and Jacob claimed in the 1840 census to have been born in NJ. They most probably belong to the Bellisfelt (Bellis) family of which several branches existed in NJ/PA beginning. The original Bellisfelt immigrants arrived in America around 1721-1744 from the Neuwied area of Germany.
Maudie Mae "Dink" Bellis

I am looking for information about Maudie Mae "Dink" Bellis. I know that she had two (2) children; Joe Bellis and Clara Bellis. Dink lived in Woodside a community of Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina. She lived right across the street from the old Woodside Ave Church of God. I would like to know who her parents were? The reason why I am asking is because she was my grandmother, Jewel Hazel Moss Vickery's cousin?

Thanks In Advance,
K.
