Walter sent me a copy of an article from History of VA, Vol. 4, Am. Historical Soc., Chicago & NY, 1924, p. 485.

To combine sources:

There have been four BELT generations in America [?], and each had a Humphrey [Singleton?] BELT. The first was b. Scotland, came as a ship's surgeon [?], and settled at Beltsville, MD.

The second Humphrey BELT in this line was born in Beltsville, Prince Geo. Co., MD, and moved to Cumberland Co., VA. Mildred Croxton FORD, b. ca. 1778/9, married a BELT, probably this Humphrey. Dr. Sterling FORD gave free medical advice, ca. 1820's, to Dr. H. Y. BELT & Dr. H. M. BELT. For his brother-in-law BELT, Dr. FORD on 23 Nov. 1831, prescribed..."tranquility of mind. But the shadow of hope." Humphrey BELT died before the 1840 Census. In Cumberland Co., VA, 1850, Mildred C. BELT, 71, was with Frances P. FORD, 65 (sister). Humphrey & Mildred probably had

Humphrey [H. Singleton or H. M. or H. Y.?] BELT, b. ca. 1798, VA; of Pittsylvania Co., 1850.
Victoria Ann BELT, b. 180_, m. Powhatan Co., VA, 21 Oct. 1821, Richard A. SWANN
Benjamin [S/L?] BELT, b. ca. 1803, m. Eleanor, b. ca. 1810, li. Henrico Co., 1850, with them was Eliz. SWANN (a niece?).
Eliza Granville BELT, b. 18__, m. 21 Oct. 1830, Powhatan Co., John R. SWANN.

Dr. Humphrey [Singleton?] BELT (25 Dec. 1825, Cumberland Co., VA - 27 Aug. 1888, Whitmell, Pittsylvania Co., VA), m. Mary A. "Mollie" DANIEL (10 Je. 1835/40?, Pittsylvania Co., VA - 1 Mar. 1917, S. Boston, VA). Children of Humphrey BELT & Mary DANIEL

Mary Douglas "Mollie" BELT (ca. 1861 - Sept. 1922, S. Boston, VA) m. after 1880 Census, Henry A. SOUTHALL, who d. Lynchburg, VA.
(Dr.) Walter Gilmer BELT (ca. 1863 - 10 Mar. 1890, Callands, Pittsylvania, VA)
(Benj.) Lloyd BELT, b. ca. 1866; to NY, NY, with Lorillard Tobacco Co.
Humphrey Singleton BELT (1 Mar. 1869, Whitmell, Pittsylvania Co., VA - _ ) m. 19 D 1894, S. Boston, Halifax Co., VA, Annie R. EASLEY, dau/o Nannie P. OWEN & Col. Henry EASLEY of S. Boston.

FamilySearch database of the 1880 Census, Tunstall, Pittsylvania, VA: BELT, Humphrey, 55, physician; wf. Mollie, 40; ch. Mary, 19; Walter, 17; Lloyd, 14; & Singleton, 11. All births in Virginia including parents of Humphrey & Mollie.

The fourth was Dr. Humphrey Singleton BELT of S. Boston, VA Humphrey & Annie had

Dorothy Preston BELT, b. ca. 1900+, d. age 4 yrs.
Humphrey Singleton, d. age 14 mos.
Singleton, b. 8 F 1906
Henry E., b. 21 Mar. 1908.

We think that the reference to Beltsville may mean that instead of being an immigrant, Humphrey BELT (ca. 1770 - 183_) might have been a son of the Humphrey BELT, b. ca. 1729, who was son of (Col.) Joseph BELT (ca. 1680 - 26 Je. 1761) and his second wife Margery [WIGHT] SPRIGG. Humphrey BELT, b. ca. 1729, m. Mary BROOKE.

Can anyone help find the truth about this family?
