Does anyone know the parents of James Belton? He was born about 1810 in North Carolina. He seems to have wandered around through many states like North Carolina, Pennslyvania, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois. He was married to a woman named Sarah and later to a woman Lethia. From one site I read he may have been in a mob that killed Joseph Smith. I just can't seem to get any farther back.

She was my Great Great Grandmother.

She was married to Joe Lovelace and their children were Lydia, Anne A., Early A, and Nora Frances (My great Grandmother).

In searching the 1930's Census in Rockingham County NC, I found Minnie as the wife of Charlie C. Grogan (born around 1872). Other family members and their relationship to Charlie C. Grogan (head of household) were:

Louie Grogan - Son born around 1915
Annie A. Belton - Daughter in Law - born around 1900 ( I believe this was Minnie's Daughter, not their daughter in law)
Clara B. Belton - Daughter in law - Born around 1914
George Belton - Step son - born around 1920
Myrtle L Belton - Step Daughter - born around 1926

I believe that Myrtle L. Belton is actually my grandmother - Myrtle Lee Grogan. She is the Daughter of Nora Frances Lovelace Which would have made her Minnie Belton's granddaughter, not step daughter.

The reason I am searching is because although my grandmother's name was known as Myrtle Lee Grogan, her mother (Nora Frances Lovelace) Didn't marry a Grogan until several years after her birth. I have not been able to find a birth certificate for Myrtle Lee.

In speaking to some of Nora Lovelace's decendants, I continue to hear that Myrtle's real father was James Wall. I have no other information about him except that in the early 1950's Myrtle went to visit him but got nervous mid trip and came back home. At that time he was living somewhere near Haywood County.

If anyone has anymore information or would like to compare notes on this family, please feel free to email me at got5 @ earthlink.net <remove the spaces>

Thanks!

Heather

Descendants of Raymond or Leslie Belton

I am looking for descendants of Raymond H. Belton (born c1905) or Leslie Belton (born 1897) both of Brighton, Sussex.

The reason is that I would very much like to locate the present whereabouts of William Vine's diary. My ggg-grandfather William Vine was a miller in Brighton, Sussex (c1790-1836) and a prominent member of the (Particular Baptist) Salem Chapel in Brighton. We know that he had a diary, and that it survived until at least 1934, as quotations from it were published in an article about him in the Sussex County Magazine by Raymond H. Belton, and so the diary was presumably in the possession of the Belton family at that time.

Raymond Belton was a gg-grandson of William Vine. I have so far had no success in tracing Raymond Belton's descendants, though have established that his elder brother was the Rev. Leslie Belton, one of the founders, in 1944-5, of the National Unitarian Fellowship in the UK.

Whoever has the diary probably also has two paintings which I would also like to find - a portrait of William Vine, and a painting of his windmill by Henry Bodle, his son-in-law.

Any information at all which might lead to these items would be welcome! - Steve Henley
The following is my family from a family Bible. This is about as far as I can get. It is as the Belton clan just appeared in Randolph County out of nowhere. There are two CLEGGs that show up nowhere else in the family history, what little I have.
My surnames are...
Preslar, Belton, Gardiner, Faust, Williams, McGee, McBride, Berry

Charles William Belton born 11-28-1856

Mary Rosetta Belton born 7-31-1859, died 2-7-1863

John Henry Clegg born 12-2-1862, died4-27-1863...1863 is a guess as it appears to be written over and looks
like 1813 or 23.
Elizebeth Ann Clegg born 5-6-1863

Buster ( Grace ) Belton and Tiny Belton born 12-25-1898, Tiny died 5-11-1899

Wayne Fickinger born 6-23-1926

Howard William was born 8-31-1880

Ida Mary Belton born 2-8-1882

Mary Jane Belton, Dora Elisabeth Belton born 2-28-1884

Robert Elwood Belton born 9-28-1888

John Crawford Belton born 3-1-1892.....This is my grandfather, it is said that he was born with another given
name but they changed his name because a man offered to buy
his first suit if they would change to his name.

Rosie Bell Belton born 2-28-1890

Edna born 10-9-1894

Would like to connect with anyone who might help
Max

Belton's in Texas 1850-1900?

I am looking for any information on BEN BELTON. He is listed in the 1900 Texas census, living in Marlin, Falls county. He is listed as being born Feb 1858 in TX. He is married to Josephine (nee Lemmons) and has 2 children, Rosalee (Rosa Lee) and Bennie (Benny) B. He has been married for 12 years (1888?).

The census says that both of his parents were also born in Texas? I know that Josephine (Josie) Lemmons grew up in Farmer, Young Co., TX and I have to assume they MAY have married somewhere around there, but as yet have found nothing.

There is a story that she may have been "disinherited" by her family when she married him?

Josephine and Belton were divorced sometime between 1900 (when thier 3rd child Nettie was born) and 1910 (when Josie shows up running a boarding house as "Josie Schlesinger" in Port Arthur, Jefferson Co., TX.) I was told that he also remarried and started another family?

She and her family stayed in the Port Arthur area, and in fact many of them are still there today. Unfortunately, since she divorced Belton when the children were so small, I haven't been able to find anyone who knows anything about him.

If ANY of this sounds familiar, please post a response, or email me at Raynesbarbies@aol.com

Thank you....

Charles Belston and Mary Bowman

Am looking for any information on the family of Charles Belston...my ggg-grandpa. He married Mary Bowman who died in 1850. His 2nd wife of Sarah Jane Edwards. He & Sarah Jane are listed in the 1870 census as living in Turtle Creek, Shelby Co., OH. I am a descendant of his & Mary's daughter, Melissa, who married Jacob Swander.

Does anyone have any information on the Belston's or any of the kids - or know anyone who might? I have a wonderful picture of Melissa but there are 3 other people involved and no one knows who they are. (I'm assuming they're kinfolk but the only ones who knew for sure have gone "underground" and aren't talking.)

Sure hope you can shed some light on this or can put me in touch with people who might be able to help!

You can contact me at beandipz@yahoo.com
Thank you!

Sheryl Peterson
OK

Does anyone have any info about the first Belton to come to the Americas?

I am trying to obtain some information about my father's paternal ancestors. His father, James T. Belton, was born in the Charlotte-Monroe area of North Carolina. James's father, Rufus Blair Belton, was born in the Kershaw-Camden area of South Carolina. Rufus Blair Belton's parents were a white plantation owner whose surname was Belton (I think his first name was John; but I am not certain), and his mother was a mulatto slave woman owned by the Belton family. I am trying to get information about the African American, European American, and mixed ethnic Beltons of South Carolina. If anyone can provide me with information about the Beltons, when they first arrived in South Carolina and from where; and about the slaves they owned, etc., I would be quite grateful. My e-mail address is chfcarey@aol.com. Thank you.

As a young boy, my ancestor George MURRAH, b 1812...lost his father and mother((Morgan Murrah (aka MURRAY/MURRY) and Elizabeth Jane CASON)). Their death came prior to 1828. Elizabeth Jane CASON was the daughter of Cannon CASON, Jr. of Fairfield District.
George MURRAH and possibly his older brother Thomas were raised by William BELTON from Fairfield Co. or Kershaw Co., SC. I believe William's father may have been a Jonathan BELTON.
George Murrah's four younger siblings were raised under the guardianship of Moses KNIGHTON, also of Fairfield Co., SC.
There was a post several years ago on this board regarding a cemetery near the "old BELTON Plantation", but I am finding additional information very scarce.
If any has information on the BELTON family, or original location of this plantation...I would be most grateful.

Does anyone have this Mary Alice Belton in their line? She was probably born abt. 1920. Went by the name "Alice", attended Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, IN.

I bought an old scrapbook of hers from the 1930's that I'd like to reunite with her or her family. Any help would be appreciated. Please e-mail me directly if possible. I have no connection to the Belton's so this isn't a board that I visit.

Thanks,
Lisa Goeppner
lgoeppn@yahoo.com

Belton re-union

Hello,
We are Belton's from Australia. We have noticed that there is an enquiry for a reunion in South Carolina. Although we are not able to get there we would be very interested in getting a book or some photos from this event.
This is the first time we have ever searched the U.S. for evidence of the Belton's migrating to there as most of our relatives are directly decendant from England.
We live in a small town of 20,000 on the East Coast of Australia called Taree. It's north of Sydney.
Hope to hear from someone ,
Regards

Larry and Robyn Belton

My Belton family came from England around the turn of the 19th century into the 20th century.
