African American Beltz/Bealts Families

I am searching for African American Beltz/Bealts families living between 1800 and 1948. More specifically, I am looking for information on Mary A. Bealts and any of her family members -- parents, siblings, etc. I believe she was born in 1928 in the month of December.

If you have a Mary Bealts/Beltz in your line, please contact me so we can compare notes. I have found Mary Bealts living in Brunswick, GA in 1946 and then later in the 1990s. Because she was born in 1928, the only census record she would be listed in is 1930 as an infant and again in 1940 which hasn't been released yet. I have her descendants, I just don't have any information on her parents, siblings or ancestors.

I have spoken with others who are having a challenging time researching African American Beltz families. Let's work together and see if we can find some links in lineage. I am happy to do look ups as well as share information that I may have with you.

Re: The Man That Never Was aka Glyndwr Michael, died 1943

hi, Glyndwr Michael was born in Aberbargoed, in the southern Welsh coalfields, on January 4, 1909. His mother was Sarah Ann Chadwick. His father, a colliery haulier named Thomas Michael. They were unmarried. Sarah never learnt to read or write, or ever had any use for either skill.

Around 1919, when Glyn was almost 10, his father’s health began to decline, probably due to the delayed effects of syphilis, combined with the lung-rotting damage from working underground for three decades. By 1924 he was no longer able to work, and his mind steadily disintegrated. The family survived on charity from the Pontypridd Union. Just before Christmas 1924, Thomas stabbed himself in the throat with a carving knife. He died four months later.

Michael, now 15, had watched his father turn from a vigorous coalminer into a diseased husk. He had seen him stab himself and then watched him fall apart in a lunatic asylum. Glyn had been born poor. Now he was a pauper. At the outbreak of war he was living with his mother, but a year later she too was dead. Sarah had been his only emotional support. On January 16, 1940, Michael witnessed his mother’s death certificate, buried her alongside his father in Trealaw cemetery and disappeared. A country at war had little attention to spare for a man who was homeless, destitute and, most likely, mentally ill.

Michael probably ingested “Battles Vermin Killer”, a rat poison made from white phosphorus. He may have killed himself intentionally. But it is also possible that he ate food laced with poison and left in the warehouse, simply because he was hungry.

Phosphorus poisoning is an horrific, slow way to die, as acid in the digestive system reacts with the phosphide to generate the toxic gas phosphine. Michael was pronounced dead on January 28, 1943. At the age of 34, he had simply slipped through the cracks of a wartime society with other concerns: a single man, illegitimate and probably illiterate, without money, friends or family, he had died unloved and unlamented, but not unnoticed.

As soon as the body of Michael reached St Pancras morgue, Bentley Purchase informed Ewen Montagu that an ideal candidate for the project had arrived in his jurisdiction and would be “kept in suitable cold storage until we were ready for it”.

The coroner later explained that Michael had taken “a minimal dose” of rat poison. “This dose was not sufficient to kill him outright, and its only effect was so to impair the functioning of the liver that he died a little time afterwards”, leaving few clues to the cause of death.

Montagu would later claim that the body used in the deception had “died from pneumonia after exposure”; that his relatives had been contacted and told the body was needed for a “really worthwhile purpose”; and that permission was duly obtained “on condition that I should never let it be known whose corpse it was”. None of this was true.

Montagu referred to Michael as “a ne’er-do-well”. It was true that his life had been short and unhappy, but posthumously, the ne’er-do-well was about to do very well indeed.

Before the operation could be formally launched, it needed a new codename. Churchill had a clear policy on choosing code words for major operations: “They ought not to be given names of a frivolous character” or names that in any way suggested the character of the operation. This rule was routinely ignored throughout the war, for spies found the temptation to invent joking and hinting titles for their most secret projects almost irresistible.

Plan Trojan Horse became “Operation Mincemeat”. There was nothing haphazard about the choice. Montagu’s “sense of humour having by this time become somewhat macabre”, a codeword that signified dead meat seemed entirely apt. There was no danger of any grieving mother complaining that her dead son had been deployed under a frivolous codeword because, in the case of Michael, there was no one to grieve.

Montagu and Cholmondeley were instructed to “continue with preparations to give MINCEMEAT his necessary clothes, papers, letters, etc”. Out of the officially nameless corpse in the mortuary they must conjure up a living person, with a new name, a personality and a past.

The corpse would carry official letters to get across the core deception, but also handwritten personal letters, to convey personality. “The more real he appeared, the more convincing the whole affair would be,” reflected Montagu, since “every detail would be studied by the Germans.”

As if constructing a character in a novel, Montagu and Cholmondeley spent hour after hour in the Admiralty basement discussing and refining this imaginary person, his likes and dislikes, his habits and hobbies, his talents and weaknesses. They gave him a middle name, a religion, a nicotine habit and a place of birth. They gave him a hometown, rank, regiment, bank manager, solicitor and cufflinks. They gave him all the things that Glyndwr Michael had lacked in his luckless life, including a supportive family, money, friends, and love.

Michael became Captain (acting Major) William “Bill” Martin of the Royal Marines, with identity card number 148228. The dead man was similar in build to Cholmondeley, but his clothes lacked the patina of wear, so the RAF officer climbed into the Marines uniform, and wore it for the next three months.

The man they conjured up was clever, even “brilliant”, and industrious, but forgetful, and inclined to the grand gesture. He liked a good time, enjoyed the theatre and dancing, and spent more than he had, relying on his father to bail him out. The first witness to Martin’s fictional character was his bank manager. Montagu approached Ernest Whitley Jones, joint general manager of Lloyd’s Bank, and asked him if he would be prepared to write an angry letter about an overdraft that did not exist, to a client who was also imaginary — a request that is surely unique in the annals of British banking. This was followed by a letter from John C. Martin, “a father of the old school” in Montagu’s words, and a bill for shirts.

While the larger themes of Martin’s life were being sketched out, Cholmondeley also began to gather the smaller items that a wartime officer might carry in his pockets: a book of stamps; a silver cross and St Christopher’s medallion, a pencil stub, keys, and a used twopenny bus ticket.

And yet something was missing. He had no love life. Bill Martin must be made to fall in love. In mid-February, the hunt began for a suitable mate. “The more attractive girls in our various offices” were asked to supply photographs for use in an identity parade. Montagu made a point of asking Jean Leslie, a young and attractive MI5 secretary, if she would oblige.

A few weeks earlier, Jean had gone swimming in the river at Wittenham Clumps with Tony, a Grenadier Guardsman on leave. Tony had taken a photograph, which he sent to her afterwards. In it, Jean has just emerged from the water, in a one-piece swimsuit, with towel held demurely, hair windswept, and a sweet grin on her face. In 1940s England, the image was not just attractive, but almost saucy, and both Jean Leslie and Montagu knew it. Leslie’s photograph was added to the growing pile of Martin’s possessions, and a new character to the case: “Pam”, his fiancée, excitable, pretty and really quite dim. Here was a typical wartime romance: sudden, thrilling and, as matters would shortly turn out, doomed.

They would need love letters to go with the photograph of Pam. These were composed by Hester Leggett, the head of Leslie’s department at MI5, a spinster cruelly nicknamed “the Spin” by her younger female colleagues. Into Pam’s love letters, the Spin poured every ounce of pathos and emotion she could muster. “That lovely golden day we spent together oh! I know it has been said before, but if only time could stand still for just a minute . . . But what are these horrible dark hints you’re throwing out about being sent off somewhere — of course I won’t say a word to anyone but it’s not abroad is it? Because I won’t have it, I WON’T . . . Darling, why did we go and meet in the middle of a war . . ?”

Cholmondeley and Montagu believed they had created a fully credible character in William Martin. “We felt that we knew him just as one knows one’s best friend,” Montagu wrote. “Ewen lived the part,” according to Jean Leslie. “He was Willie Martin and I was Pam. He had the sort of mind that worked that way.”

Meanwhile, Cholmondeley’s mind was wrapping itself around the problem of how to transport a corpse from London to Spain, and then drop it in the sea, without being spotted, in such way that it would appear to be the victim of an air crash.

A submarine would be the best method despite the “technical difficulties in keeping the body fresh during the passage”. Submariners were a notoriously hardy bunch, but even submariners would surely object to having a rotting corpse as a shipmate.

By early April, the plan was almost ready: all that was needed was final approval from above. On April 15, 1943, Colonel Johnnie Bevan, the officer in overall command of wartime deception, found himself sitting on Winston Churchill’s bed and explaining Operation Mincemeat to a Prime Minister in his dressing gown. “To my surprise I was ushered into his bedroom in the annex where I found him in bed smoking a cigar.”

Churchill “took much interest” in the scheme, so much that Bevan felt obliged to point out that it could all go spectacularly wrong. The Prime Minister’s response was characteristically pithy. “In that case, we shall have to get the body back and give it another swim.”

There is a plain white marble tombstone in a graveyard in the Spanish town of Huelva bearing the name 'William Martin', beneath which rests the body of a man who helped save the lives of thousands and turned the tides of war. A red carnation has been laid on this grave on a regular basis – the grave of a man whose identity, for over half a century, remained a mystery, protected by the committee who oversaw Operation Mincemeat.

Hi Michael, I'm Ron Mizrany's wife, Fran. How ironic to meet you here! I've been working on the family tree and have gathered a lot of info. If you would like a CD of the Beltz line from your family's perspective, let me have your address and I'll mail it to you. Or I could post it at File Factory.com and you could pick it up there. The tree isn't perfect yet, but will it ever be? I just recently sent a copy of it (in paper form) to Margie and asked her a bunch of questions about your family so that I could fill in some blanks. So, as you can see this is really ironic! I hope she got it as I haven't heard anything from her yet. Let me know how you want to handle this. I would like to get whatever info you have too!

Fran Mizrany

Re: Seeking info on Elizabeth Beltz, spouse of Michael Turner

It sounds like you are way further ahead of this than I am! Since my orginal post, I've been linked with several other Turner/Beltz researchers. Unfortunately I have not been able to contribute much, except to link the Turner and Marriott families.

My g-grandfather was Charles William Marriott (born in Milford), son of Newton Marriott and Martha Jane Baldwin. Martha Jane was the daughter of Uriah Baldwin and Sarah Turner. Sarah was the eldest child of Michael Turner and Elizabeth Beltz.

Martha Jane died young, when my g-grandfather was about 5 yrs old. (He wrote a very brief autobiography and said this was the most traumatic experience of his life.) Interestingly, Newton Marriott's second wife was the widow Nancy Jane Adams, nee Turner. If I remember correctly, she was a younger sister of Sarah so Newton's first wife's aunt.

The Marriotts, Turners, Malotts and a few other families in the Clermont/Hamilton area seemed to have a close relationship. The Turners and Marriotts appear to have arrived in Clermont County about the same time, and we were wondering if perhaps they also knew each other in PA before moving to OH. The Marriotts were predominantly in Philadelphia (and before that, NJ). I don't think we have found link to the Turners being in Philadelphia but the other researchers have found a great deal in Bedford Co, PA and Loudoun Co, VA. What did you find in Philadelphia? I believe we would all be interested if you are willing to share.

The information about Michael's father being named Lewis came from (if I remember correctly) a brief biography of one of Michael's sons, who had settled on the Little Miami in Clermont Co, however I think the other researchers have indicated that this was incorrect. I will really have to pull out my file again. I've been going down a different branch lately and I am having trouble recalling what I know about the Turners.

My good friend (and non-relative) Patrick Beltz is also descended from your Hessian soldier, Adam Beltz. As the Revolutionary War was winding down, Adam wanted to stay in the new America. Rather than wait, he deserted his Long Island garrison and found this most hidden Horse Valley.

Just last Monday after Christmas, as we traveled on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-70 and 76), we drove through two tunnels one-tenth of a mile apart: Kitatinny on the west and Blue Mountain on the east. Horse Valley sure is a great place to "get lost".

Patrick and I are not related on this side of the Atlantic and probably not over there either. Contact him at "PBeltz1@charter.net". He's got Adam's family figured.

Good luck.

Dear cousin Angela H.,

The History of Clermont Co, Ohio (just east of Cincinnati) presents the story of their arrival. This one page broke the case for me 30 years ago. That led me to Bedford Co, PA >> Loudoun Co, VA >> Lancaster & Lebanon Cos, PA >> and Philadelphia in September 1753 >>

Then to 1747 in Brenschelbach, along the French/German border, and another couple dozen towns where the family business was grist and saw milling, back to just before 1600.

We will visit there in August 2010 and will have much to say later.

By the way the German surname "Dreher" translates to "Turner". There is a lot of "turning goin on" in grist mills. Sharing the trade, the families likely intermarried. Later turners made spindles for staircases. Often German singing societies were called "Turners".

They floated upstream on the East Branch of the Little Miami River and settled east of Newtown, Anderson Twp, Hamilton Co, OH and along the border with Clermont Co, one mile north of Mt. Carmel. This is a bit short (6 miles) of Milford, but they might have used the Milford Post Office.

Elizabeth Beltz was the daughter of Andrew "the blacksmith" Beltz and Julianna Harclerode/Herchelroth. She was born 1781 near Lovettsville, VA; resided in Colerain Twp, Bedford Co, PA; and died September 1, 1824 in Clermont Co, OH. Michael was born 1781 and died January 16, 1856 in Clermont Co, OH.

Tell us about Lewis, father of Michael Turner.

Tell me about yourself. Where is your family from. How long have you been researching? Whatever?

To modify your statement, "his parents" likely lived in Windber, Paint Twp, Somerset Co, PA. A very small part (5%) of Windber is on the border of Richland Twp, Cambria Co, PA.

This area is 15 miles west of West Sinclair Twp, Bedford Co, PA. and 33 miles northwest of the city of Bedford.

"Cockpit recordings indicate the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 teamed up to attack their hijackers, forcing down the plane near Shanksville, in southwestern Pennsylvania." This is 15 miles south of Windber.

My Beltz are from Colerain Twp, Bedfoird Co. One of our branches had several homes and farms in Juniata, Napier and Harrison Counties southwest of the city of Bedford. A Floyd Beltz, born in this area, migrated to Limaville, Stark Co, Ohio, near Alliance.

If you can make the connection, we might get you back to the immigrants, Andrew "the blacksmith" Beltz and his father, Johannes Peter Beltz, arriving Philadelphia in 1753. This August 2010 we will visit the homeland along the French/German border, going back to Hans Belz slightly before 1600. For generations, our Beltz family operated 8 to 12 grist mills east/southeast of Saarbrucken.

Good luck.

The Beltz family in Wheeling, WVa, is not the Andrew or Adam families from PA. The WVA Beltz came in the 1800s directly from Germany. Much has been written as they had a large business there.

Looking for info on Lizzie and William Beltz; also found the surname Betty associated with them. As far as I am aware, they had 7 children;William(1902), Elmer(1905), Martha(1907), Lafe(1909), Ruben(1911), Zora(1913), and Dora(1913). As far as I know, the children were left in the care of a neighbor. The neighbor then sent them to an orphanage where the youngest twins were adopted by Lepley's.

Seeking info on Elizabeth Beltz, spouse of Michael Turner (b. 1781 in PA). A bio of one of their children says that they came from Bedford County, PA on a flatboat to OH and settled near Milford. I haven't been able to find any info on them in PA however. Another bio indicates that Michael's father's name was Lewis and they were of German descent. Again, could not find out anything further.

If anyone knows about this family or can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it!

I am convinced there is a connection, considering the names and locations of this particular branch of Beltzes.

Hi there,
I am sure we are connected but I really do not know exactly how. My grandfather mentioned Marlette, Mich. many times. I do not remember if he lived there or was born there. He and Uncle Ed left home when he was about 9 or 10 years old. My grandfather was Herman Richard Beltz. About all I remember is that Aunt Mary married Morris Lyman from Canada. Uncle Ed Beltz lived in Lynn Haven. Fla. My grandfather's oldest son, Albert lived in Detroit and owned and operated a Dry-cleaning business.

Look forward to hearing from you.
Melvin Carver

hello,
We are indeed connected. Aunt Mary was my grandfather's older sister. My grandfather was born 1881 and moved to ocoee, Fla. about 1920. He had lived in Dundee, Fla before that. His first wife passed away and he married my grandmother in 1923. Sorry for the tardiness of this email. It is good to hear from you and i look forward to hearing from you again. Only one member of the family now lives in my group that carries the Beltz name and he now lives in S. carolina.

Take care
melvin carver
