1903 Nov 14 - RUNAWAY - “RUNAWAY GIRL IS SAVED. Opal Belveal of Evansville, Wis., Found in Chicago. Alleged Hunter, one Brockton, is said to have induced the girl to leave her home - Mother doubts ‘elopement’ theory and believes her daughter was lured away by a young woman - Train conductor is guardian angel.

Whether 16 year old Opal Belveal, daughter of N. V. Belveal, a farmer, missing from her home in Evansville, Wis., since last Saturday, and found yesterday in Chicago, left to elope or not probably will never be known by any one but the girl herself. There is a possibility that she was saved from the fate that awaits young girls lured to the city from the country.

The girl secretly packed up her clothing. She told her mother she was going to a dance. Later Miss Belveal’s clothing was found to be missing and it was discovered she had disappeared. A dispatch from Janesville reports that the girl went to Koshkonong, Wis., where she expected to meet a Chicago man, Brockton. Brockton is variously described as a man suspected of luring girls to Chicago dives and as a hunter at the lake near Koshkonong.

Mother Accuses Young Woman.

Mrs. Belveal, however, states that the girl went to Janesville, and stayed there with Tillie Knudsen, a young woman who the mother accuses of influencing her daughter.

Opal left Janesville on Sunday for Koshkonong, and left there Thursday night on a Chicago and Northwestern train for Chicago.

The day after the girl fled a description was sent to the officials of the Northwestern road, and when she boarded the train at Koshkonong the conductor decided to hand her over to the special agent of the road on arrival of the train in Chicago.

Believes Girl Was Lured Away.

The mother arrived in Chicago to meet her daughter a few hours after the girl had left for Evansville with a neighbor. She said she did not believe it was an elopement. The mother stated that the girl had run away several times before, and always had been found in the company of the Knudsen girl. 1903 Nov 17 - RUNAWAY ARTICLE - “Hard Chase For Fleeing Girl: Janesville, Wis., Nov. 13 -- Evansville and Chicago police have been kept busy for twenty-four hours trying to arrest pretty, 16 year old Opel Belleville of Evansville, who was induced to leave her home and widowed mother by a strang woman, who promised her riches if she would enter her Chicago resort. Coming to Janesville, she learned the police were after her, and she took the passenger train last evening to Fort Atkinson. This morning she came through Janesville again, locking herself in the toilet room of the passenger train. The police were notified but when they reached the depot the train was well toward Chicago. A message to Mayfair resulted in her arrest and detention in the police station. Mrs. Belleville went to Mayfair and this evening returned with her daughter. Passed away on January 12, 2009, at the veteran's home in Yountville, CA. He was born January 30, 1926, in Mannette, WA. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Francesca. He is also survived by son Joseph (Debbie); Francis (Kristi); and Anthony Trouette; and daughter Christina Horner. He is preceded in death by son Victor Paul; daughter Modesta; and baby son Thomas. He was the beloved grandfather to Jamian Horner, and honorary grandfather to Daye Richardson, Sean and Jeff Verhil. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ernie and Lucy Bianco; niece Mary Jane and nephew John Bianco, and Geri (Arnie) Cramer; niece Jackie (Gene) Knapp, grand-niece Maureen Milligan, and grand-nephews Mark and Matt Callahan, and their families. Victor taught at Richardson Bay Schools in Sausalito, Reservation School at Stewart's Point, and Bellevue Elementary in Santa Rosa. In 1960, he moved his family to Healdsburg to teach at Healdsburg Elementary and then Fitch Mountain Elementary.

A memorial mass will be held at St. John's Catholic Church, Friday, January 30, 2009, at 9:00 a.m.

Very distantly. His father's brother's daughter's son married an Urbanus. I was astounded by the number of marriages that occurred in 2 of the generations surrounding Opal. I was just trying to clean up these associations which led me a myriad of directions and eventually to your post.

They had one son, his name was Victor A., born 30 Jan 1926, in Washington (prob Kitsap Co.), he died on 12 Jan 2009 in Yountville, Napa Co., CA. I have Victor Sr. as having married a gal names Anna in 1941.

How are you connected? Opal is my distant cousin - I usually research a few generations of my direct line's sibling - I've found some wonderful gems that way!

Opal Belveal subsequently married Victor J. Trouette 9/13/1924 in Kitsap County, Washington State and died Bremerton WA 5/13/1930. She is buried in Ivy Green Cemetery in Bremerton. She was Victor's 2nd of 3 wives. Eventually I will post Victor to rootsweb. To my knowledge they had no children.

I have Otis Edgar Belveal born Feb 20, 1870 near Martinsburg, Keokuk Co., IA. He was the son of Nicholas BELVEAL and Mary Susan MILLER. I show that Nicholas moved to Ponca City, Kay Co., OK with his brother Peter. He was there from 1893 through 1915. In 1919, show Nicholas moving to Oakland, CA, presumably to be with relatives. He died there Mar 11, 1926. He is buried in Mountain View Cemeteary. Show children of Nicholas BELVEAL and Mary Susan MILLER:
1) Otis Edgar BELVEAL
2) Minnie BELVEAL

Both of Nicholas's children are named in his death certificate, so it is to be taken as probable that they had then removed to Oakland, CA. Both were living in 1915, and both did remove to CA. No further record of the line of Nicholas BELVEAL.

He was married to Mrs. Daisy May (Billings)GILLOTT (1st husband was William D. Gillott). Daisy was born in Niles, Floyd County, Iowa in 1870. I am trying to determine if she had any children.

I have a Ellen Elizabeth Miller Belveal that was married to Francis Marion Belveal in 1872 Keokuk co. Iowa. She was born May 10, 1855 in Ohio. I am looking for her half-sister Mary May Miller. They are the daughters of Reuben Miller. Elizabeth's mother was Abigail Meek but dont know about Mary's mother.

I believe this is the correct line. Elizabeth died in 1917 and was buried at Sunnyside Cemetery. My grandmother was Bertha Olive Harman/Harmon Clark. A.C. Byron Clark is my grandfather, Fredrick Homer Clark's brother. My g-grandfather was William G. Clark. He and his wife Caroline are buried in Keokuk County in the Helm Cemetery. I was told that David Pressley Belveal was Elizabeth's father, but I've not been able to document this fact. Doris

Did your Elizabeth happen to die in Van Buren Iowa in 1917?
I notice you had Clark listed on your surnames. I found a Lizabeth Belveal b. 1872 in Hayesville, Keokuk County, Iowa
d. 1917 in Van Buren, Iowa. Her sister Alice Margaret m. A.C. Byron Clark. She had two brothers George E. Belveal m. Martha Ellen Keasling, he died in Oakland CA. The other brother James A. Belveal married Estella Hayes.
They were the children of David Pressley Belveal and Sarah Ann Jones. David b. 1849 in Posey Co., Indiana.
David was s/o John Belveal and Mahala Gardner. His older brother John Jefferson was my ggggrandfather.
If this is the correct person I can direct you to where I found my information.

It is quite possible we hve a connection. This family was going by Belville still in the 1850's. Some of the sons changed their spelling to Belveal around 1830 or so I believe, but it may have been later.

I will search down sibling roads and see if your Elizabeth M. was a cousin/niece to my Belveal's in Keokuk County.

Hello, With my family, anything is possible. I have found her listed as Elizabeth M. Belveal and E.M. Belveal. She and Anderson Harman evidently eloped and she was married under the name Lizzie Bellville in Jefferson County on 9 Oct 1888. Anderson was several years her senior and had been married previously. We do not have the names her parents or siblings. With the name Mary Elizabeth, this could be. The descendants of this family have a tendency to go by their middle name. Hope you can help. Doris
