Hi hobochick. The names you mention are not familiar to me, but I've been researching the Bembrys for a while, and I am pretty sure that they are all related in one way or another to Miles Bembry from the Scotland Neck area of NC. I have a blog you might like to check out here: http://bembrytree.wordpress.com/. My family came by way of GA and FL, but there is information about the early NC Bembrys that might be helpful to you.

Also, you didn't say whether you are a white or a black Bembry--there is a page on there with all the information I found about black Bembrys in the process of researching my white Bembry line. I expect we'll find that we are all connected up somehow one day.

Also, when you are searching old records, try every mispelling of the name you can think of. No one knew how to spell it back then, so you will see Bambry, Bamberry, Bemberry, Bembrey, Bumbry, Bimbry, you name it. The ancestry.com search engine doesn't catch most of these, I find. Good luck!

I've just started researching my mother's family tree. Does anyone know who the Davenport Bembry family are related to? I am related to Matilda (Tilly) Bembry, George Bembry, and Geo Bembry from the 1800's. Geo Bembry is listed as being from either N.C. or VA, so I'm unsure of where to look next. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

So your uncle is probably related to Pilgrim in some way. I had an great aunt Lizzie who's maiden name was Stallings. She was married to my great uncle Samuel Wills. So I'm sure we're related in some way or fashion. Good to know you :) If you need anything about the family, let me know.

If the Halls were rich, then Kenneth also was good at marrying rich women! Mary Mayo was from a big planter family back in NC. Kenneth's brother Miles married a Marina Mayo from the same family. I have not had time to figure out whether the two may have been sisters, but I imagine they were cousins, anyway.

Yes, I believe that the Bembrys were originally from the Edgecombe county area, though Kenneth and his brothers were born in the Bertie county area. I am pretty sure that the Bembrys were originally Benburys from Chowan county and the name just got changed when a younger brother, Miles Benbury, moved west.

Kenneth and Mary Mayo did have one daughter, by the way. Her name was Henrietta, born about 1822 in NC. She did well for herself, marrying a very wealthy doctor from Virginia named Robert Westwood Fisher. They had two children. The son never married but the daughter did, and named one of her sons Kenneth!

Thank you for your information. Email me at kbmidura@yahoo.com if you want a gedcom or a family group sheet. That's funny you are also a Reubin Thompson descendant. But I am not surprised. I have started to think that everyone in the southeast is related one way or another, you just have to go back far enough!

Thanks for the Bembrey infomration. Mahala's brother, William Hall Jr, lost money when the Union Bank went under in the Panic of 1837, according to a 1977 article in the "Magnolia Journal," Must be the same bank scandal. The Halls were a prosporous family, but I don't know where they came from before Georgia. Juniper Sr appears to have had ties back to Va and Maryland, where William Hall Sr's wife's family came from before moving to Pitt NC then Ga. She was Jane Adams, daughter of Colson Adams and Rachel Cason.

I am intrigued by the information that Kenneth's first wife was a Mayo, and I assume from some other research that they were in Edgecombe NC. My 3great-grandmother, Martha Thigpen, was Juniper Sr's second wife, and her family moved to Georgia from Edgecombe/Pitt N.C. Her father, Travis Hill Thigpen, had been widowed twice - first wife was Mary Dennis, second was Lydia Mayo - before he married Martha's mother, Hannah Hardy Hall. I wonder if Lydia and Mary were related.

So far I had not found any children for Kenneth and Mary. Mary did come from a large family - three brothers and five sisters. Several of them were in Alachua Fl by 1860, some also lived in Gadsden Co Fl and Thomas Co Ga. In Leon Co, they lived near Mt Pisgah church by a lake that became known as Lake Hall.

Some of Juniper Hall Sr's sons moved to Thomas Co Ga around 1830, and many descendants remained in that area - Thomas Co, Decatur Co Ga, and Gadsden and other north Florida counties. Around 1860 some of his younger sons moved to the Alachua/Clay/Bradford area of northeastern Florida.

By the way, I noticed from your posts that you are also a Reubin Thompson/Rachel Chambers descendant. So am I, though their son Rev. Robert Thompson.

I noticed from your other posts that you are a Reubin Thompson descendant also. So am I.

Yes, I am sure it is the same Kenneth Bembry, because Bembry was a rare name at that name, and there was only one Kenneth of that generation that I am aware of. They were married 10 Sep 1829 in Leon County, and I believe they had one daughter, though I don't know her name. She may have died young. His first wife was Mary Mayo.

Kenneth was quite wealthy, listing an estate worth $10,000 in 1850. But he was not gentry. His father, Miles Bembry, was a small-time planter from North Carolina, where Kenneth was born. His brothers were William Miles, John, and Thomas (my ancestor, who had no talent for making money!)

I found an interesting mention of Kenneth in a book. From my notes:

Mentioned on page 179 of "Creating an Old South: Middle Florida's Plantation Frontier Before the Civil War."

Initially a Democrat, Kenneth Bembry, who was the richest member of the Pisgah Methodist Church, was nominated by the Whigs as a token "yeoman" candidate for the state legislature in 1841. The Whigs were at the time attempting to overcome the bad blood from a real estate/banking scandal that was greatly resented by the common people of Leon County. The author speculates that the Whigs offered Kenneth "social acceptance" among the Virginia and North Carolina-bred planter class. He lost the election in a landslide and was branded as a "traitor" by area Democrats.

So, Mahala knew how to pick 'em. Will be happy to send a family group sheet or something if you like.
Hi, I am researching the William Hall family of Leon Fl, and the Juniper Hall family of Emanuel Co Ga. I am a descendant of Juniper, and believe that William was related to him. William Hall was born 1771/81 in possibly Maryland. He married Jane Adams in 1805 in Tattnall Co Ga, but moved to Pulaski Co Ga for a while before settling in Leon Fl abt 1824. His daughter Mahala married Kenneth Bembry about 1829. I think they are the Kenneth Bembry d 1851, and the Mahaly Bembry b 12/16/1805 d 1849, who are buried at Mt Pisgah Methodist Church in Leon Co Fl. Do you think this is the same Kenneth who was a brother of your John Bembry?

I can't seem to get further than that......now who was the white Bembry who owned them and from part of Africa were they or were they born in slavery?

Looking for information on John Bembry, Leon County, Florida Territory

Looking for information on John Bembry born about 1794 in NC, moved to Leon County, FL 1820-1830, died in or moved away from Leon County between 1830 and 1840. He had a wife and about 6 children that I cannot find on later censuses, though three of them were boys. I believe one of the daughters was named Frances Martha and she married William Bryan in 1830.

There is some reason to think that John was wanted for murder of a Littleton Bryan, but I do not have the full story on that. It is possible that, if this is true, his family moved away, but I can't find them living anywhere else in 1840, either.

John's brother, Kenneth Bembry, was a big Leon County landowner who died in 1854.

Any information would be most welcome!
