Hello Stacy,
My name is Richard L. Schindall. I'm doing research on the Bement Families of Victory, Cayuga County, New York and Nashua, Chickasaw County, Iowa. Primarily Hosea & Sallie along with Anson & Hannah along with their son Albert & wife Charity. Noting in one of your postings that you might have photos of some of these folks. If possible could you scan and e-mail copies to me at Dickjeannette@msn.com. If there are any costs involved please advise. Yours truly, R.L.Schindall

I am very interested in this line and would really appreciate any information that anyone can share with me. I've read through these posts and have a basic picture but not all the details. Spencer and Linda say they even have pictures of Anson which would be absolutely fantastic to see.

I am related through Anson's son Franklin. Thanks in advance for any information you can give me. I would love to be able to pass this along to my father.....

David
dpbement@yahoo.com

If your father is still living, ask him where Patrick Claude Bement died, and what year. You could write to the town clerk where Patrick Claude died and request his death certificate. That certificate will list his parents' names on it.

Once you know the parents' names, you can search those records.

Other than that, you could check the social security death index, or www.rootsweb.com, or www.familysearch.org.

The idea is to start with what you know, and go back into time.

I'd also suggest looking at Cyndi's List, for further resources.

Perhaps you should invest in a good book on how to research your genealogy, or subscribe to a good magazine on the subject.

Hi,
My name is Davonna Bucy Willits. My grandfather was Altus E Bucy of Oklahoma City. I am curious about your grandfather James. We have an odd story about James Bucy in our family and am wondering if there is truth to it. Also my grandfathers mother was killed in a fire in or around Okla City and my grandfathers siblings were in an orphanage as well.

Her parents were Henry Clay Bement b. 24 June 1850, Beloit, Wisc. and Ann Birchall b. 3 Dec. 1859, Billinge,England. I have siblings and back generations on the Bement's. I'd be glad to share.
Dualing Ancestries

In scanning various sources, I see dualing ancestries for Jeremy Bement (1807-1849) of Seneca Falls, NY. My question would be, which is the authoritative lineage? I have seen one lineage which has him descending from John Bement (b/1776), Jesse Bement (1740-1790) and John Bement (1702-1756). In that research, Jesse is the younger brother of the Abigail who married Azariah Grant (1722-1798) and had a son Azariah Grant (1750-1822) as well as a grandson Azariah Grant (1782-1825). These Grants were of the Grant of Windsor CT line.
I descend from Robert and Anna (Grant) Grant. Anna's line is from Grant of Watertown, but Robert's ancestry is not established. I strongly suspect Robert comes from the Grant of Windsor family, in part because he had a grandson named Azariah Grant, and two great grandsons also named Azariah Grant. The Azariah who was the grandson of Robert Grant died in Seneca Falls in 1835 and is buried in the same cemetery where Jeremy Bement buried two of his young children.
I find it too much of a coincidence for the Bement children to be buried in the same cemetery as my Azariah Grant, especially if the above Bement ancestry is true, which would also make Jeremy the second cousin of an Azariah Grant, the first cousin once removed of an Azariah Grant, and the grand nephew of another.

I have came across a Josephine Huldah Bement that married a William Swinton in Butler Co Iowa. On her marriage lic. she is listed as Josie Bement. And the wedding took place at Nelson Bement Res. Mar 25 1876. I think she was a daughter of Olive Boorom Bement and Nelson Bement. Someone on the internet said she died in Kansas. Do you know anything about this person. I would like to get her obit. I have a copy of the marriage lic that I got at Allison (Butler Co. Iowa courthouse. I sure would like to get a hold of a living person that was a relative,
Hoping to find out what Olive boorom Bement mother's parents names were. We know that Olie mother was Huldah Smith. You can e-mail at coldday50677@yahoo.com

Nelson Bement married Olive Boorom April 30 1854 in Illinois.
McCarty Bement married Susan Boorom which was sister to Olive. Olive and Susan Boorom's parents were: John and Huldah (Smith) Boorom. I do have a copy of Olive and Nelson's marriage lic. which I would share. I think MaCarty and Susan were proably married in New York. John and Huldah were married in Charleston, New York 1822. The family moved to Illinois, then to the Plainfield area in Iowa, then to Hubbard Minnesota. Susan and Olive were sisters to my great-grandfather.

Re: Bement/Beaumont/Bemont

Meakins Bemont's son Ambrose Bemont married Lovisa Allen on October 9, 1800 in East Hartford, CT. Ambrose was born March 8, 1777 and Lovisa was born February 1, 1782. Lovisa was the daughter of Othniel & Phebe Roise Allen. Othniel was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He served in the 2nd Regiment of the Connecticut Line from January 1777 until his discharge in January 1780. Othniel married Phebe Roise in Charlestown, New Hampshire on July 12, 1781. Othniel was born February 22, 1758 and died December 15, 1822. Phebe, born January 29, 1761, was the daughter of Jonathan Roise. She had sisters Amarillis and Grypherra. She died after 1843 and before 1850.

Ambrose and Lovisa Bemont had the following children:

Mary Bemont, born August 14, 1802
Leonard Bemont, born May 16, 1804
Louisa Bemont, born September 16, 1806
Sallyann Bemont, born October 10, 1808
Mariah Bemont, born March 25, 1811
Delia Bemont, born July 1, 1813
Julia Bemont, born April 12, 1816
Jane Bemont, born August 21, 1819

Mary Bemont married Andrew Henry Dewar on March 1, 1826. She and Andrew moved to New York by 1830. In 1832, they (including sons Henry B. & William Ambrose) moved to northern Cumberland County, NC. In 1855 the section of Cumberland County in which they lived became part of the newly formed Harnett County. Most of the Dewars living today in the central part of North Carolina are descendants of this family.

Other than the paragraph immediately above, all the information comes from the Othniel & Phebe Allen pension papers.

Matteson-Bement: 1880 Butler County Iowa
I have very little information on my great, great grandmother Nancy Matteson and am hoping to exploit a Bement connection to learn more. Nancy Matteson (aged 65) appears on the 1880 Federal Census for Butler County in the household of William P. and Flora B. Bement. Flora McCurdy also appears in the household as a boarder (school teacher).

What I know of Nancy Matteson: She was born in New York State and she was married in Steuben County, New York on 4 February 1834. She married William Muffly and they had five surviving children, all born in Cuba, New York (Allegany County). Between 1850 and 1860 the family moved to Butler County in Iowa. In the 1895 Iowa census, Nancy (Matteson) Muffley (the "e" seems to have been added to Muffly sometime after moving to Iowa) identifies her religion as Spiritualist.

Common to Nancy Matteson and the Bements are the era (mid-1800's) and the locale (New York) and perhaps more. Was there a "Spiritualist" connection or was there a family connection between the Bements and Mattesons?

The 1880 Iowa connection leads me to anticipate there may have been a longer term, family relationship between the Bements and the Mattesons that could help to lead me to Nancy Matteson's ancestry.

I would appreciate having any bit of information that might be related to Nancy Muffley (Matteson) or might link the Bements and the Mattesons.

Thank you,
Richard Muffley
The Boorom came from New york, then to Illinois, then to Iowa and moved on to Minnesota. And then William Boorom came back to Iowa.
Susan and Olive were sisters of Smith . Smith married Marinda Jackson in Plainfield Iowa. William Boorom my grandfahter was a son of Smith & Marinda. Smith parents were John Boorom and Huldah Smith.

I suspect that the William P. Bement of your interest is William Payson Bement, son of Julius Caesar Bement. Flora B. is apparently his first wife because later (1894?) he was married to May/Mary (Miller) and had two daughters. I hope that you will contact me directly (spence@eecs.umich.edu) so that we can exchange more detailed information.
Spence, Ann Arbor, MI

I have only what other people have sent me. I don't have that Hosea married in 1851 so perhaps i miswrote that for you to think that....in my previous communication. I have that he married Eliza before 1851, he married Abigail after 1851, I have that his son Anson was married to Hannah Hollenbeck.

Anson Bement descendant information was provided in part by Marge (Bement) Fritsche of Austin, Texas She provided the link for Anson to his father, Hosea Bement (~1790-1837) (Nov 1999)

The fact that Anson, & Nelson & other sons' of Hosea lived less than 5 miles from Frances Bement Darby & her mother Sarah Bement in Clarksville, 1860 & 1870, originally led me to believe, just as you do presently, that the nearby Nashua Bements' might be relatives. I have not found a link to date, however the sources of my information are folks who have seen information under my name on the web & sent me further info. I have not investigated this information very far so it could very well be wrong. 1820 BEMENT HOSEA Cayuga County NY CENSUS 064 CITY OF Cato Federal Population Schedule NY 1820 Federal Census Index NY32091198

Sally listed as wife, LDS page, marriage about 1812, Victory, Cayuga Co, New York

BEMENT, HOSEA
State: NY Year: 1820
County: Cayuga County Record Type: Federal Population Schedule
Township: Cato Page: 064
Database: NY 1820 Federal Census Index

Stacym@MCleodusa.net -information about Hosea.

Hello, Linda:

Good to hear from you again. I need some clarification. Hosea's first child Laura was born in Aug 1810 so it is likely that he was married to Sallie before then. Since he died in 1837 he could not have married Abigail after 1851. As I recall, it was Hosea Bennett who was married to an Abigail and who is buried in the Westfield cemetery.

His first wife was named Sallie but I could not find her maiden name so I am interested in your source for that information. They had 4 children. His second wife was Hannah Granger who outlived him by at least 6 months but likely died before 1844. They had 6 children. What is your source for Eliza?

Hosea's land was divided into 10 parcels of 8.5 acres each according to his will and those parcels were sold off at various times by his offspring. All of his sons removed to other states after his death. I have not found out what happened to his second wife Hannah but I expect that she did not outlive him by very many years. I could not locate her in any 1850 NY census.

After the Civil War Norman resided on a 40 acre parcel in Ingham County MI, adjacent to my great uncle Silas B. Bement, an older brother of my great grandfather Harley C. Bement. This "coincidence" leads me to believe that Hosea and my GGF Harley might have been brothers or otherwise closely related. Harley's parents have not been identified to my satisfaction and he and/or Hosea were likely related to a Levi H. Bement, born ca. 1795, whose parentage is also unknown. Now you know why I worked so hard on Hosea and his offspring.

I believe that Roswell Bement married Mary Lockwood who remarried after he died in 1849. He resided in Michigan.

I have only Emery H. Bement who married Verlinda Poindexter. They had 2 sons who had no children. Their daughter Sallie E. Bement never married. What is the evidence that the H. stood for Hosea? I traced him to Missouri.

Descendents of Hosea and other Bements

This is response to an inquiry by Lynne Lennert on 18 Oct 2003 for information on descendents of Hosea Bement of Victory, Cayuga County NY. I have considerable information on this line gathered over more than a decade that I can share with those willing to share in return. Please contact me directly at spence@eecs.umich.edu so that we can interect directly. Information on any links back to Hosea or any of his descendents will help me greatly in responding in detail to particular interests and will allow me to do further research on the inquirer's behalf.

Concerning this particular inquiry, I found a burial site for a Hosea Bennett (on tombstone) and his two wives in the Old Westfield Cemetery near Victory. However, it is my belief that this is not the burial site of Hosea Bement because there are many inconsistancies between the tombstone data and information I have on Hosea Bement. I would love to be proved wrong. I still have no information on Hosea's parents and thus no link to his parents or siblings.

Spence

Currently I am trying to get all my info into my computer program. When I do I would be happy to email you a copy of Hosea's linage. To the best of my knowledge. Is Butler or Bremier County close to where your set of Bements are from. I have quite a few pages of history from these areas and they are all tied to Hosea's kids. My personal email address is Stacym@MCleodusa.net I should have all my info in the computer within a couple of days. I really would like to make the connection

The children I have for Hosea are Anson, McCarty, Sarah or "Sallie", Reuben S. Bement, Emery Hosea Bement, Nelson, & Laura. McCarty, & Nelson show up in Iowa census, so it was easy to get their children's names, but the rest is from Dennis & Spencer Bement. Porter Bement was a school teacher in the area according to the history of Frederick Twp, Bremer Co, Iowa in 1859. This could be the Porter Bement, born 1826, son of Jesse & Amy Castle Bement. There is another Porter Bement born to Jessie Bement & Jane Lewis, but he is to young, having been born 1846. That 2nd Porter is the Grandson of Jesse & Amy Castle. He is the cousin of Julius Bement, whose daughter Frances married Thomas Darby, moved to Clarksville. Julius & Jesse Jr. were brothers. Their brother Severance had a wife named Mary Hosmer, perhaps a clue to the Hosea name, but maybe completely unrelated. Dennis & Spence would know more about that. Asa & Ruth Neal who also lived in the Tioga Co Area of New York, very near Dryden, have a son Severance, born about same time as Jesse's Severance, son John born about same time as Jesse's John (Julius father). There isn't a close relationship between Asa & Jesse per Bement Chronicles though. John son of Asa, has a son John Charles Bement in Waverly, buried in Shell Rock, are family members of his family. As you probably know, Shell Rock is just about 5 miles from Nashua & Clarksville also, & it seems really strange all these folks from the same area, same last name, moved to the same little farming community area, yet are not more closely related.....or perhaps they are, since we don't' know Hosea's lineage.

I was born in Charles City, my Dad was born in Nashua. Knowing how small Nashua is, it's hard to believe that my Bement relatives in Clarksville, Iowa who also came from New York - Dryden, in 1868, are not closely related to your Bement family. They must have only lived 3 miles or so apart at a time when the world wasn't nearly as populated as it is now. Frances Bement, dau of Julius Bement & Sarah Darling, married Thomas Darby in 1865 & they came to Clarksville in 1868. No one seems to know where Hosea came from....yet the Bement experts seem pretty sure he isn't related to my Julius Bement family. How they know that, I'm not quite sure....but I'd like to know if you know any info further about the Hosea Bement family. I have (7) children listed for them including Anson. Thanks!
Hosea is one of major Bement lines that I have yet to connect to the rest of the Bements. I have worked over ten years to that end and have acquired a great deal of information on his line. I have been to Victory NY and to the Cayuga County courthouse in Auburn. By coincidence I will be in Auburn tomorrow and expect to revisit the courthouse and library. Please contact me at spence@eecs.umich.edu so that we can exchange information.

Spence BeMent

A pension request was signed by Albert with the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions, on 4 July 1898. Albert's death certificate, from the Iowa State Board of Health, Chickasaw Co., Town of Nashua, indicates the died at age 74, on his birth date 20 Jul 1906, listing his father as Anson Bement. Albert died from Chronic diarrhea. An affidavit sworn by a Sarah A. Hicok says she was Albert's sister, age 65, dated 27 Jul 1906 and a resident of Nashua, Iowa.

Pension files listed all of his living children (the following three had dates different than those provided by other sources: Addie Maria, 8 Sep 1868; Edith, 26 Sep 1880; Lila Dora, 22 Aug 1883.

Charity Kent Bement received her last widow's pension check on 4 Aug 1925 and was dropped from the roll because of her death on 16 Aug 1925. Her parents were Harrison/Hanson and Mary Kent from New York. (Source: Jeanie (Folks) Robertson, March 2000).

My G Grandmother, Frances Bement Darby lived with her husband Thomas only 3 miles from NAshua in Clarksville & I started researching these folks thinking they were relatives, but I can't find any connection - don't believe they are related. Dennis Bement at the Bement Chronicles pages may have more information, or Spence Bement might have info on these folks also. Have you contacted them?

I am looking into this family because Dora Lilla Bement (born July 26, 1884) married my great-uncle, Peter Savener, in Nashua on May 29, 1901. They had a daughter, Lorraine Savener on Dec. 8, 1904. Dora died January 22, 1910.

Peter took his daughter to San Antonio, possibly as early as the 1920s; I believe she married a Carpenter. Does anyone know about this family?

Amy Gray

Hello; I recently began searching the Hosea & Anson Bement line, helping a dear friend research her family. Am trying to surprise her for her 79th birthday soon with more information & putting together in a book form for her. Would appreciate any assistance & information you might be able to share about the family. Do you know the names of both wives of Hosea & all the children's names born with each wife? Any photos of this family? Understand you have visited the Old Westbury Cemetery where Hosea is burried, any photos available of his headstone? Would so appreciate anything you can help me add for this wonderful lady. She would be the great, great, great grandaughter of Hosea Bement. If I in turn can be of help to you, please let me know. Thank you for any contributions you may be able to give.

I have that Anson's father is Hosea, but his mother is wife #2, Eliza. Other siblings I have for Anson are Sallie married to a Cox, McCarty, Nelson, and Laura married to a David Hunter. Both McCarty and Nelson were in Ia with Anson. I have not seen a Julius. In my records it says that Hosea had 10 children by 3 wives. Abigail the 3rd wife had Mary and Hosea Jr. Anson was born in 1814 by his tombstone. Do you know any more on Hosea? Thanks

I too have the same census, plus the 1856 of IA. I have more children listed for Nelson than the Alfred you listed. Plus McCarty's children. The info I have on Hosea has been handed down in the family. I know I don't have all the children. I have that he died in 1887, do you know if this is correct? Also buried at the Old Westbury Cemetery, Cayuga Co., NY. I have also done the land records in Butler Co. for Nelson and McCarty, which turned out not to be too much as they didn't keep very good records in the 1850's. My husband's line goes Hosea, Anson, Sarah (married to Charles Hicok), Samuel, Ada Fae (married to Edward Mulnix), Shirley Fae (married to Derrell Scott), Derrell Jr., my husband. Is there anything I can help you with? Michal
