Thank you for your quick response. I do believe the names you mentioned are the same ones I've been researching.
I show the following names listed in the Green Garden, Illinois Town Meeting Minutes dated April 5, 1853. J.N. Bemiss, Clerk Protem; Edwin P. Bemiss, overseer of road district number 2; Simeon Bemiss, voter; Ephraim G. Bemiss, voter.
The following election results were also listed: J.N. Bemiss was elected to the office of Collector; Simeon Bemiss was elected to the office of Commissioner of Highways; and Edwin P. Bemiss was elected to the office of Constable.
Hopefully this information will be helpful. I'm not related to the Bemis family. I'm researching the history of the town of Bemis, Illinois (which no longer exists) Some people say it was spelled Bemes, however, I believe it was spelled Bemis...now I have to prove it. I have a feeling it was named after Simeon Bemiss the road commisioner. I've also heard there was a mill (grain, feed, flour) named the Bemis Mill in Will County Illinois, however, I haven't had a chance to research this lead. I'll keep you posted.
