Catherine, thank you so much for that information.I have been searching for this side of my family for ages.It is my mums side, and she hasn't many details at all, except for the fact her mums family were supposed to be from Scotland.I kept hitting brick walls, there are so many with the same or similar names,it does get confusing at times. My mums mum died when she was in her forties, and my mum doesn't remember many relations being mentioned.
I have been up to Scotland each ear for the last 7 years, but not had time to look for ancesters whilst there. Thanks again.Carol

Hi Carol
I had a couple of spare credits so I looked up your great grandparents marriage. Here are the details

Married 17th February 1893 at 4 Shieldswood Parish of Dalziel by William Hood (Free Church)
Alfred Bence age 18 Puddler
Christina McLintock age 17

Grooms's parents Frederick Bence (Puddler) and Catherine Pettigrew
Bride's parents Robert McLintock (Iron Puddler) and Mary Dickson.
The marriage is misindexed as Bruce instead of Bence so you might want to inform Scotlands People of this.
Hope this helps
Catherine

I hope this message gets to you as it is about nine years after your posted date. On March 10, 1918, my mother, Nora Newman, was born in Winnipeg Manitoba. Shortly after her father, Charles Richmond Newman, died in Winnipeg (West Kildonan)in about 1917 or 1918, she was adopted out. On the adoption papers the mother's name was Emma Newman. My mother is now ninety years old and I am just surfing the net here tonight and I have come upon your information. This really is a shot in the dark but who knows and so I am sending this query. If this query is of any interest to you please give me a reply. Thank you. Blair Paterson

Earlier this year I traced John Bence's birth place to Kelston (4 miles from Bitton) where there is a family grave with several of his relatives. I have transcribed the baptism register which is now available on FreeReg. It appears that the information concerning James and Martha on the LDS site was not based on fact but was pure speculation based on the names of the children. Please email me and I can send you details of earlier Bence generations from Kelston, West Kington, Castle Coombe and Hawkesbury.
Patrick Henry Bence

Does anyone have info on the parantage of Patrick Henry "P.H." Bence (1838-1895) who lived, died and is buried in Three Springs, Huntingdon County, PA? I have been looking with no success.

In 1860, he married Margaret Jane Drake (1840-1863) of Saltillo, PA.
In 1862, they had a daughter, Anna Mary Bence Keffer (1862-1941).
In 1863, Margaret J. Drake Bence died and is buried in the Saltillo Cemetery, PA.
In 1864, PH joined the Union Army. He mustered out in Aug. 1865.

In 1866, he married Frances Ellen Heeter (1846-1913) of Three Springs. By this time PH was fully settled in Three Springs, PA, was the cabinet maker for the area and was active in the community, church and school. PH & Frances had 3 children: Vida Elizabeth Bence (1867-1868), Margaret Jane Bence Bawden (1868-abt 1945) & Bruce Talmaze (1874-1968).

In 1895, PH died (Jan 3, 1895) following a couple years of illness. He is buried in the Three Springs Cemetery with his wife (Frances), daughter (Vida) and daughter-in-law, Alice Barber Bence (Bruce's 1st wife). His obituary in the Huntingdon Journal refered to him as "Henry" rather than "PH" or "Patrick" as in other references found.

In 2003, a message board posting mentioned that Patrick Henry Bence's grandson, Frank Patrick Bence (Bruce's son), responded that PH may have been orphaned and was possibly from Indiana, PA (where many other Bence families reside). Not of this has been substantiated to date.

Anna Mary Bence Keffer is my husband's g-grandmother. So, if you have info that might help, it would be most apprciated.

Hi Dorothy,

I can not find a george, but on the 1871 census, james bence born 1829 in biddestone, married to elizabeth nee gibbons,b. 1831 in london, had the following children, catherine,b colerne, albert j. b 1857 colerne, john h, maria, francis, emily, selina. e. joesph, also my great.grandfather fredrick b 1867, he married maragret mcjannet b scotland 1874, whose children were frederick j bence,b southampton 1899, the family have been told he died in the first world war, but the story in the family is my grandmother isabella, remembers her father having a very heated row with a young man just after the war in the family home, her father was a stonemason and freds name was craved into the stone tablet by the church door right at the bottom, not where it should of been as the surname started with a B, Isabella was sure that it was her brother fred that night, but none of the family saw him ever again, it may have been wishful thinking on her part as he was much loved, Isabella had asister catherine and another brother robert, he was raised in scotland by his mothers family the mcjannets.

In box wiltshire, the bences were quite well known, they owned property, and shops, but they came from a long line of stonemasons.

Please let me know if this has been any help to you

Regards,

Debbie.

I currently live 3 miles from Bitton and spent my childhood a mile outside Bitton . I can trace my great grandfather John Bence 1828 - 1870 to Bridgeyate, 3 miles from Bitton and believe his father was also called John but have no details of him. There are many gravestones in Bitton church for the Bence family but unfortunately are badly weathered so few clues there.Drop me your email address. I have recently retired and can now research more. Regards.Michael Bence

Thanks! Right now I have two Bence young adults in ROME NY circa 1870:

1870 US Census: New York, ONEIDA, Rome, 5th Ward. Roll 1059 Book 1, Page 679a
Age 25, single, working as a laborer. Born in France.
1870 US Census Both names misspelled? Same Ward? Different houses, yes. My GUESS is they are Brothers.
Frank Bense 25 1844 France White Rome Ward 5, Oneida, NY Male
Peter Bense 19 1850 New York White Rome Ward 5, Oneida, NY Male

Peter marries Mary Elizabeth Mizer...eventually they end up in Watertown.

Here are the GRAVE MARKERS:
Glenwood Cemetary (Catholic), Watertown, Jefferson, New York, USA: Grave Markers:
Bence Agnes E
Bence Estella H
Bence Frank C
Bence Frederick J
Bence George
Bence Kathrerine F
Bence Mary
Bence Mary J Mrs
Bence Michael
Bence Peter

**************************************************
PETER BENCE was ostensibly born in NY in 1850....but I can't find him in 1860 census to locate a father (from Germany or France....Alsace Lorraine?).

*****************************************************************
So my guess, based on your post, is that the Bence's are all related, even though the earlier lines have now branched over a couple....

RJ Samp
Hi Robert! Your post interests me. Yes, there are a lot of Bences in the Watertown area. The early ones are descended from Francis and Sarah (Mosher) Bence. Their oldest son Nicholas moved west to the watertown area from the Palatine area of NY. However, the info you posted from the censuses is a problem. Francis Bence came to this country around 1777 from either France or Germany, depending on the record. Nicholas was born in NY. Neither of these men could be Peter's father. This leads me to believe that Peter is not in direct line of descent of Francis.
I have a cousin directly descended from Nicholas who has done considerable research. If you don't mind, I will send him a copy of your message and see if he minds if I send you his email address. Perhaps he will remember a Peter in his work.

Why was a Ren(t)fro child named after a Bence?

Does anyone know why Robert Ren(t)fro and Catherine Goodwin (Goodwin may be maiden or married, unsure) named a child John Bence Rentfro in 1824? They were living on Cherokee land in northern Alabama at the time, moved to McMinn county Tennessee in 1826. Another son of theirs also named one of his children John Bence. Does anyone have any idea if there's any relation or if they just thought enough of a Bence to name a child after him? Robert was born in either TN, KY, or VA, Catherine in NC.
