Pauline's sister Mary was my grandmother. Mary Catherine Benda was born on Feb. 13, 1883 [not Aug. 13]. She married Ignatius J. Zika sometime after 1915. They had two children, twins: Eleanor Mary Zika (my mother), and Richard Elmer Zika (my uncle), born on Oct. 4, 1921.

Mary Catherine (Benda) Zika was known to our family and friends as "Mamie". She died at age 74 on August 23, 1957.

I'm pretty certain that you are speaking of a different Josef Benda than mine, because the one I'm researching, for my brother-in-law, was born about 1838 in Bohemia; emigrated to the US abt 1865/66; died in Johnson County, IA in 1911. His son Joseph was born in IA 1869 or 1870; died in IA in 1960. So far, I think both of these Josephs lived out their lives and raised families in the Iowa City/Johnson County IA areas, I have run across a different branch of Bendas - including Josefs/Josephs) who lived up around Riceville, IA (Howard and Mitchell counties) and in Spillville, IA, (Winnesheik County, next to Howard Co.) A great many Bohemians settled in these two areas and founded communities. You're correct about one thing - Benda is a common surname, and I'm discovering that searching for a "Joseph Benda" in Iowa is very like looking for a "John Smith". Good hunting to you!

First off, I am new to ancestry. I recently have taken over as family historian for our family. I think I am related to Josef Benda. His son that you listed Josepher or Josper Benda would be my great grandfather. His son George Melburn Benda was my grandfather. He was born 1 Sept 1907 in Riceville, Iowa and died before I was born 1 Aug 1972 in Hopkins, MN. I know that his mother's name was Mary Dolezal, which is what my mother says is on the marriage license. (I am working on getting that scanned in) but my aunt said that in some records it was written Dolecal by mistake. I am getting a bit confused because I think both Josper or Joseph and Louis named their kids George. One George M (my line) and another George A. Let me know what information I can share with you. I am pretty sure this is the same line. We have always known that Josef Benda was from Bohemia. I understand that Benda is like Smith in the Czech Republic. So in short, it is very possible we are looking at the same line, but I don't know if I have the information you've been looking for. Let me know if you think this is the same line or not. :) Thanks.

Johan/John Benda and Anna (Pollak) Benda were also my husband's great-grandparents. Transcriptions of their obituaries were posted to this message board nine years ago. If you click on Advanced Search above you can search for obituaries by Message Classification. If you click on the box next to Benda Board (at the top of the advanced search) the search engine will return only messages posted to the Benda Message Board. There are three obituaries posted to the Benda board (I posted them).

Johan/John actually had twelve siblings. Six of them died in Moravia (now Czechoslovakia) before Theresia (Dimt) Benda brought her remaining children to America. My mother-in-law's cousin spent years collecting records from Czechoslovakia and this country. She compiled a book about the family in 1979. Needless to say, many of the people living then are now gone. And she concentrated only on our branch of the family in the U. S. I will be happy to exchange information with anyone who is interested

You can see my husband's Benda line (and all children in in this country by going to http://www.genealogybug.net/benda/benda_descendants.htm You can contact me directly by scrolling to the very bottom of the page and clicking the my name in the copyright notice.

My grandfather is Joseph Albert Benda, born in Illinois on Jan 26 1888 in Chicago and died in Berwyn IL in July 1948. I know he had 8 other siblings but don't know their names or where they ended up. What I do recall however, is my mother showing me a picture of my great-grandfather in Bohemia (Czechoslovakia) with a mule at his side and an earring in his ear. The family lore is that he was a "gypsy". I don't believe he was a roma gypsy, but rather gypsy by definition of a "roamer" or traveler. Did your Chris Benda have a brother named Joseph? I think one of Joseph's siblings may have been named Frank, but am not sure.

Emigrated to US, arrived 22 May 1880, aged 38, with wife Therese aged 38, daughter Auguste aged 9, son Carl aged 8(?) and son Wenzl, aged 6 months. All family members are listed as being born in Bohemia, and the family, or some of them, settled in Iowa. The family religion is Catholic. There are many Bendas in Iowa, so it's possible Josef may have been joining other relatives already there. I'm mainly interested in Wenzl's line, but all info on Josef and family is welcome. Thanks!

Do you speak Czech? If you do maybe you can help me with an incorrect spelling? I have John Cibulka wife Catherine HLAVEK. They were born in Bohemia, and lived in Chicago, IL. I believe Catherines' surname is not spelled correctly and that's why I can't find anything on this name. Would Jan be the Czech name for John? Maybe someone knows this family?

HLAVEK is a Czech surname. It is not so much frequent. In the Czech on-line directory I found only seven Hlavek. But it is to find in the search machines, with familysearch and with ancestry com. The name is correct spelling. Jan is correct John, in German Johann. where in Czech - Rep. this family comes from ?

Thank-you for answering! On the death certificate for Katheryn Cibulka Stenicka she lists her mothers' maiden name as Hlavek. She lists both her parent's as being born in Bohemia. I believe when her parents' came to America, Bohemia was under the Austrian Empire. What do you know about the Bohemian's? Did they speak the same Czech language that is spoken by most Czechs?

Diane
Diane,
The Czech language is everywhere in the Czech - Rep. the same. There are different dialects, but otherwise the language was also like that in bohemien time and as Boehmen was under Austrian rule . It gave also before 1945 Czech humans spoke German, because they where married with Germans .You have to researched of where, which city, village, your Cibulka and Hlavek came, otherwise it is heavy which to be found. Ciculka gives it still many in the Czech-Rep.. Juergen

John (actually, Jan) Benda was my great-grandfather, too! But he never came through Ellis Island (I have documented that) as part of his arrival to the U.S.

I should also correct a few other things in your posting: Joseph Jan Benda's first wife was named Frances, they were married in the early 1920's. She did not pass away until the 1950's (which was hardly considered dying 'very young' as she had already raised three children to adulthood).

Joseph Jan Benda's second wife was Vilma (not 'Velma') Batha. And the spelling of his daughter's first name was correctly 'Dolores,' not 'Delores' as posted.

Just call me a stickler for accuracy. . .

Sorry I had to re-read the original post....John Benda was my great grandfather, my great uncle was Joseph Benda my grandmothers brother. Joseph was married to his first wife and she died very young, his second wife he married years later her name was Velma. He had a daughter named Delores and a son who died Joseph Junior. He never changed his name to Bender....always was a Benda....now his father John, when he came here from Austria they signed him in as Banda at Ellis Island. He worked for several months before he brought his wife Barbara Marie (Masek)Benda here to the US from Prague in the Czech Republic. They were first cousins. Arranged marriage, from royal blood. Great Grandpa John came to the US to stay out of the war. Joseph had 2 sisters named Barbara and Molly, and a brother named Harry. Hope this will help you. I know Josephs daughter Delores lived in Illinois. Joseph lived in South St. Louis on Pennsylvania Ave. most all his life till he remarried when he was in his 80's to Velma and they moved to Granite City Illinois into her home.

Benda/Bender Relatives

My name is Richard Vosika - live in Minneapolis, MN. My great grandfather Thomas Vosika/Wosika married Elizabeth Benda in Prague before 1860. They and 7 of their children immigrated to the USA in 1880. Elizabeth Vosika died in Minneapolis 18 May 1917. As I understand it, they came to Minneapolis because Elizabeth's relatives had already immigrated to Minneapolis earlier.

The rest of the information I have heard from my Aunt Dolores Vosika and have verified only some of it.

Elizabeth had a brother named Edward. I believe the name was changed somewhere along the way to Bender. Edward had three daughters: Christine, Rose, and Katherine.
Christine, who died in Dec 1950, married William Moe. They had two: William L. and Catherine or Kathyrn
Rose Bender never married.
Katherine married an Olstad.

Two other Bendas' are also suppose to be related, although I am not sure how: Martin, who lived in Chicago, and Frank.

I am looking for any other information on the Benda/Bender family, and the Vosika family from Minnesota.

My email is: ralvosika@juno.com

I have no information on this Mr. Benda so I collect everything I see on the Benda's
from Nebraska hoping to make the connection.

This Joseph Benda may have been the husband of Marie(Irwin) Gilson.

POTTER'S FIELD (CEMETERY); 1866 - 1960;
PLATTE COUNTY, NEBRASKA

45/D Joseph Benda 68 years old
