Actually, I traced my BENDER family to Fessenheim in Haut Rhin since at least 1809. Before that, the BENDERs were of Obernai and Neider Haslach in Bas Rhin. My earliest known ancestor is Jean Fredric Antoine BENDER of Obernai who married Elisabeth CURMANN/KURMANN in Saverne on 21 May 1696.
Is there some connection with your data?

I have a lot of information on the those names (my ancestors used them both at the same time!) north of Pittsburgh, PA. They were all from the Fellering area of Alsace, though their records usually simply say "Germany". They were Catholic. I'm willing to halp anyone looking for Binders or Benders in that area.

I'd like to find out more about the ones in Alsace, long ago and now, and also whether any of my ancestors were Jewish.

Louis and Eva Bender

I am looking for information on this particular family, as I would like to both flesh out my family tree and also connect with any cousins that are living. This family is an immigrant family of Russian and possibly German ethnicity, they are Jewish. Eva's family came to the US from Russia via England.

This is what I know so far, but I seem to have hit a road block. Partly because my grandfather never would tell me the truth.

Louis Bender (my great-grandfather) was born in PA. I think Philadelphia in approximately 1894. His parents were Abraham and Annie, I believe they were born in 1872 and 1875 respectively and they were also born in Russia.

Louis married Eva Peterson (I understand her Hebrew name was Rivkah). They had 2 children Arthur in 1922 and Constance. Arthur is my grandfather.

Abraham and Annie had the following children but I don't have birth dates for most of them:

Charles, Harris, David, Ida, Samuel, and of course Louis the Bender I am doing research on.

Thank you so much for your assistance. I have hit a road block on this and it is making me sad.

My name is Patrick Deck and I live south of Seattle, WA.

My family came to the USA from either France or Germany around 1833 (two different US Census disagree). For years I read and researched several family names and the name 'Bader" sounded familiar. My ancestor was John W Deck and he was born in 1793, he met his future wife in Dehault, France but other Census have him in Germany shortly before 1833.

What got my attention recently was the name of the Mayor of Kirchheim, Bas-Rhin (Patrick Deck) which happens to be my name as well and my late Father's name. Anyway I was told that our family came from the Alsace-Lorraine region or possibly somewhere in Germany.
Thanks! Although I see a John and Mary and although I also have Campbells and connections to Luzerne county and Hazleton, it sounds like at best these McClennans may have been distant cousins, since all of mine connect back to Scotland.

Hello Heidi, the caselman name on the messages confused me.As far as the census info It looks about the same to me as what I've got any specific questions ask away and I'll try and help. Carl switched first and middle names. They thought rosemary was only 1 yr. old when she was 2(I think I've got her birth cert.stating she was born in 1918 she died in 1989 or 1990 and is bur. in Princeton,Gibson county,In). The census taker in 1910 was tired and heard Catherines middle or maiden name as Albert. She came from Vincennes,Knox county or Vigo county I can't be sure right now but it's in Indiana and her parents were John and Rose Limbach. My local library has newspapers on microfilm and I found that in her obit as well as at ancestry when I had a subscription there.
On the 1910 census now I remember Virgils middle name was Truman.I was always told by my mother that Ada's twin was Ida and she died during birth but this seems to indicate Virgil as Ada's twin.I know that William had a sister named Ida maybe she died about the same time as the twins were born.I'll have to check into it.
Yes having your email would be helpful.
Looking for descendants of Jeremiah Pate and a Miss Bender, Colonial Virginia

Jeremiah Pate was a son of Matthew Pate and Anne Read and a grandson of Col. Thomas Pate. I would appreciate any information anyone could share about his wife.

Col. Thomas Pate was born in England c. 1650, emigrated to Colonial Virginia in 1672, and inherited a 2100-acre tobacco plantation in Gloucester County. About 1690, he started ferry operations across the York River to what became the port city of Yorktown, primarily for export of tobacco to England. By 1694, he also owned an ordinary (inn) at the port of Yorktown, where he died in 1703.

He held a number of civil and military positions in Gloucester County, representing the county in the House of Burgesses in 1684. He was a church warden and vestryman of the Petsworth Parish Church in Gloucester for at least seven years. Nathaniel Bacon, leader of Bacon's Rebellion, died in Col. Pate's home in 1676.

He married Elizabeth (surname unknown) c. 1675. They apparently had six children, who were all baptized at Abingdon Parish Church. Their children, as recorded in the church's registry, were:
John -- born 1677, died 1706 (His daughter Sarah married Col. Wilson Cary c. 1728.)
[likely daughter] -- 1679/80 (name illegible)
Elizabeth -- born 1680
Mary -- born 1684
Matthew -- born 1686 (see list of children below)
William -- born 1689

Matthew Pate married Anne Read c. 1710, grandaughter of Col. George Read, who was a greatgreat-grandfaher of George Washington. Here are their children:
Jacob -- married Zilla Broach. Died 1752, Surry County, Virginia. [They were not the parents of Rev. William Pate d. 1837 in Georgia.]
Sarah -- married William Anderson 1736-7
Jeremiah -- married (?) Bender
Matthew married (?) Buck
Rebecca -- married George Newell
Rachel -- married 1. Robert Robinson, 2. John Warrington
Thomas -- born 1728, died 1814, married Hannah Philips Williams (a widow)

Caution: There may be more misinformation about this family on the Internet, particularly Jacob and Zilla, than any other American Pate family. This is primarily due to the booklet published by John Ben Pate c. 1915. This work should be disregarded concerning this family and its ancestry. For a more reliable source about the descendants of Matthew Pate and Anne Read, consult the William & Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol XII, 1904, pgs. 119-120 and 196-198, which is available on the Internet.

This Thomas Pate family remains an unsolved mystery regarding its present-day ancestors, despite the efforts of the greatest Pate genealogists in its history, such as the late Jinks Pate-Lee, Joel Pate, and Dr. Jim Peacock. Traditional genealogy using both family and public records is now providing very little information. It appears that our best hope to link present-day Pate families to this early American family is through genetic genealogy, or DNA analysis.

Fortunately, we have a ready resource for genetic genealogy through our Pate DNA Project. Though founded only three years ago, we have 110 members, and we are certain that a descendant of this family can be linked to one of the family lines in our Project.

If you know, or if you are personally, a documented male Pate descendant of this family, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Grants for DNA tests are available through the generosity of our Project's members for any man who may need assistance in purchasing the test or who would otherwise have no interest in joining. Inquiries to me will be held in strictest confidence by the administrators of the Project.

For all descendants of Col. Thomas Pate, the Pate DNA Project, through its Pate Genealogical Convocation, has placed an impressive memorial marker for him in the beautiful and historic cemetery of Grace Episcopal Church (the original York Parish Church) in Yorktown. This marker was placed in September 2008 in one of the most desirable places in the cemetery, close to the church and next to the gravestone for George Read, gg-gf of George Washington.

I have also prepared a timeline for the life of Col. Thomas Pate, which I believe is the most complete and comprehensive study of his history and accomplishments ever compiled. Since it is lengthy (three pages) and the format would not present well on this website, I will send a copy of it by email attachment (PDF), to anyone who sends me an email requesting it.

For any descendant, this is a great opportunity to make a significant and unique contribution to Pate genealogy, helping solve one of its oldest and most difficult mysteries.

All comments, corrections, and questions are welcome, either on this website or by private email.

You are invited to view our Project's website at this link: www.familytreedna.com/public/pate-dna-project . You may find the list of most distant ancestors informative on our chart of "Y-DNA Results".

A. J. Pate
Group Administrator
Pate DNA Project

Looking for information on Henry Bender, b. PA, married approx 1825-27 Susanna(h) Moll, b. PA,. I believe that the family lived in northwestern Ohio. Information on Henry and Susanna are from marriage record of their daughter Christiann's third marriage.

Christiann was my great-great-grandmother Christiane (maybe Christianne or Christiana) Bender, born in Pennsylvania on November 21, 1828. She married George Hughes of Wayne Co., OH, prior to 1850, and had two children, Argale and Wesley. Mr. Hughes died shortly after the 1860 census (still living in Wayne Co.) was taken, and the boys died by 1866. Christiane married Peter Johnson Shively after 1860, probably in Ohio, and eventually they settled in Litchfield, Illinois.

I am married to Holly's ex-husband's brother! That sheds some light on the confusion! My e-mail address is jhacaselman@yahoo.com Are there any Byrd/Bender family reunions? I am from Missouri pretty much on the opposite side of the state. My father Henry "Bud"(as we call him) is really excited to have this information. Please let me know if you find anything else!!

Heidi Munson Caselman

Wow! This is amazing. I've been looking forever for this information. I called a library in Indiana and I have a little bit different information from her. My grandmother and her husband Henry Munson Sr. had 7 children. They are the one's who moved to Spickard. I am daughter of Roselyn's oldest son. Do you have any more information beyond our families? Like Andrew's parents?

I am actually his youngest Heidi. Holly is my oldest sister. Do you have anything posted on this site about this? The librarian was in Indiana she had censes information that listed this:

1910- William B. and Isabell Byrd
Belva E. 16
Vernie 14
Ada M. 8
Virgil T. 8
Jenny H. 1 month

1910- Andrew and Catherine Albert Bender
Coralus C. 8
Clarence F 7
Claude G 5
Joseph C 2
1920- Rosemary 1 yr.

The stuff that you have shared with me doesn't match up. I'm not sure why. Do you have more on the Byrds? If it would be easier for you...I could give you my e-mail address and you could send me whatever you have. I would LOVE more than anything to have everything on our families! Do you have everything on Rosie's family? I would like to know family of Ada and Claude's siblings if you have that. My grandmother always acted like she didn't know much about the family. Ada introduced her sister Jenny as her twin. Rosie's sister Patricia is the only surviving child of Ada and Claude and she lives in California. Thank you for all of this information...now if I can just get everything together in some form that makes sense to me!!
