Benedict Civil War Story

I will be posting weekly installments on the Firelands History Website (http://firelands.wordpress.com) of Little Doctor on the Black Horse, a story written in 1961 by my grandmother, Harriott Benedict Wickham Barton about the experiences of her grandfather, David DeForest Benedict, a Union surgeon in the Civil War. David wrote many letters to his wife during that conflict and over 60 survive today. Harriott Barton used these letters as the basis for her story and included many of them. Please visit the Firelands History Website to read this interesting story.

I have been working on Benedicts very close to this area.
My research can be found at. A recent trip took me to to the area Penn Yan, Seneca and Schuyler counties. I did not make it to Steuben (Bath) this trip.

http://alumcreekoh.com/clayn/5602.htm

This is a link to Joseph Benedict. Look at his son Lewis Benedict who moved to Steuben. I have not followed through Lewis's family other then the 1850 Census.
Priscilla was my gr.gr.grandmother. She was married to Jerome LaMay. According to census records they both were born in Canada, but I have no idea where. My Gr.parents were Budd Marion Pittenger and Sylvia [LaMay] Pittenger. I can not seem to find any reference to Priscilla's parents. According to the census, Priscilla was born in Oct.1857. Can anyone help? I don't know where in Canada, Priscilla and her husband Jerome were supposed to have immigrated to the U.S., him in 1860 and her in 1867. I also have a 3 generation photograph of the women, my gr.mother, gr.grand.,and gr.gr.grand.

I was recently at a flea market and came accross an old photo. I have no connection to this family but couldn't stand it being tossed. If anyone is researching this line and would like the photo please let me know. Here are the details.

It is a photo of a woman. The front of the photo says "Mrs. Benedict, Danbury, CT" and in another spot says "Nathaniel Seleek's grandmother.
The rear of the photo says "Sarah Isabelle Benedict, July 27th, 1902"

I found the photo in Eastern CT (on the Mass and RI border)and coicidentally I grew up in Danbury...the town where this woman is from.
Please let me know if you are interested.
Tracy

They never moved but they were listed on the 1865 STATE of Illinois Williamson Co census and on the 1880 Federal Census. Might try and located them on the 1865 State Census.
Brent

I don't know if they are identical. That is very suggestive. Since I wrote the original message, I have found Carr families around Saline County. It could be that the Mary I referenced who married into the Benedict family was part of the other Carrs and not mine. However, thanks for your response. I certainly will look into this situation.

Robert Schneider

Harold,

John Benedict who d. 1766 is buried in Pine Island Cemetery, Norwalk, but his stone has disappeared since a survey was taken in ?? - early 1900s, I believe. The same is true of his wife's stone, which was once in the cemetery at East Norwalk, the name of which escapes me. His son John, I'm happy to say still has a stone visible in New Canaan. It's now in Lakeside Cemetery, but originally in the Congregational Church cemetery. The latter apparently was eliminated at some point. I asked the historical society about it years ago and they were very vague and gave no answers. I just got a photo of the stone and you can see it at my bio page for John:

http://dougsinclairsarchives.com/benedict/johnbenedict2.htm

I'm still building my pages for the Benedicts. No stones for his wives appear in the cemetery surveys, which seem comprehensive. They certainly aren't with John in Lakeside. That's as much as I know of your line.

Doug Sinclair

I am also a great great Grandson of Albert Benjamin Benedict. I have made many contacts of descendants of Albert. I have many photos but one of Albert with the exception to the photo of the History of Atchison County Missouri. I have two photos of his father Alvin and one whom another relative believes is of Albert as a youth. I am curious as to your lineage. I believe it is via Francis “Si” or “Frank” and Carey (typo?) whom I also have photos of. I have made contact with several cousins via John Wayland also. I am from Thomas Levi. Thomas, John and Francis were 3 brothers with 2 sisters
Hannah Mahalia and Lovisia. I am excited to hear from you. If I mention “Andersonville Prison” does it strike a story in your family? I just returned from a visit to Pleasantville where Alvin’s father founded the town. Alvin’s brother traveled with his nephew Albert back to Pa. to enlist in the 4th Pa. Calvary Co. H (64th Reg), where he lost his life during the war.
Is anyone else searching for information on this individual? I am at an impasse. I have him in Lebanon, PA in 1760. That is where the problem lies. On October 14, 1760 he married either Mary Elizabeth Lauckster or Marie Elizabeth Laubscher or Elizabeth Lankster or Maria Elizabeth Lancaster. All information that I have found on the internet has one of the above with the same 11 children. The only difference being the order of birth.
Any help in identifying which is correct would be greatly appreciated. Also, has anyone identified his father? When did he arrive in America?

Sheldon Benedict 1797-1885

The Saratoga Sentinel newspaper, Saratoga Springs, New York, Thursday, January 22, 1885. Recent Deaths.
Sheldon Benedict, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Glens Falls, who died there on Monday evening, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bushnell Benedict, and was born in the town of Ballston, Saratoga county, June 16, 1797. Mr. Benedict removed to South Glens Falls when about twenty-five years of age, where he resided about a year. He then moved on the other side of the river and formed a copartnership in the harness business with Col. Alonzo W. Morgan. The firm did business near the top of Glen street hill for a number of years, when they obtained more commodius quarters on Warren street, in a building located near the sight of O'Connor Brothers' market. Here the firm were burned out during the big fire of 1854, when the subject of this sketch retired from active business life. Up to within a few months, the deceased has been a remarkable active man for one of his years. He leaves one son and two daughters -- Gilbert Benedict of Helena, Montana territory, Mrs. Hotchkiss and Miss Hattie Benedict of Glens Falls. Three brothers and two sisters also survive him -- Henry Benedict of Florida, Ira of New York, Levi L., Mrs. Adaline Baker and Miss Eliza Benedict of Sandy Hill.

Would appreciate the record or link to death notice.

More than likely the Florence cited is the first spouse of Paul Howie Benedict (b 1899) who worked in China for many years, was my Father's cousin. Florence (nee Cheney) m Paul 1918. Vol II Benedict genealogy gives her death as 16 Sep 1939 vs 30 Oct 1939 listed in State Dept's report. Paul then married Julia Lyman Spencer on 26 Nov 1942 in China. Vol II has additional info on Paul and his father, Martin Greene Benedict8 (Jonathan7, Jonathan6, Matthew5, Matthew4, John3, John2, Thomas1).

Would appreciate any additional info on this family line.

Benedict & Bradford Family Connection

Over the past six months, I have been posting weekly installments on a blog at http://firelands.wordpress.com telling the history of the founding of the town of Norwalk, Ohio by Platt and Sally Benedict in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or “Sufferers’ Land,” a part of the Western Reserve that was given to “Sufferers” burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution.

I post an episode of this history on my blog every Monday and will continue until November 2009. I have also posted a genealogy of Platt who traced his ancestry to Thomas Benedict, who settled in New England in 1638 and a genealogy for Fanny Benedict, the wife of Platt and Sally’s son Jonas, whose grandmother was Vienna Bradford, a descendant of William Bradford, who came to Plymouth, Massachusetts on the Mayflower in 1620 and was the colony’s second governor.

I invite people interested in the history of the Benedict family to visit my blog where I hope they will be entertained and informed by these postings and fill in gaps and correct inaccuracies in my research.

Thank you for your kind attention. I hope you visit my blog and enjoy my story of Platt and Sally Benedict and the settling of the “Sufferers’ Land.”

Dave Barton

I have posted on the Firelands History Blog, http://firelands.wordpress.com, the genealogy of my ancestor, Platt Benedict, who, with his wife, Sally DeForest Benedict, founded the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817.
This genealogy traces Platt’s ancestry from Thomas Benedict, who settled in New England in 1638, and is an excerpt from the transcription of a handwritten notebook I discovered in my late grandmother’s papers. The family history in this notebook was the work of two women, Agnes Caroline Wickham and her daughter, Harriott Benedict Wickham Barton (my grandmother), who separately researched and made entries in it over a period of seventy years. Agnes Wickham wrote roughly half the entries in the notebook from 1909 to 1915. In 1915, she gave handwritten copies of her work to each of her five children: Eleanor, William, Lucy, David and Harriott. Harriott continued her mother’s work off and on for the next sixty years, adding entries as late as 1977.
To see this genealogy, please visit the Firelands History Blog, http://firelands.wordpress.com, and go to the Benedict Genealogy page. I welcome comments, corrections and critiques of this genealogy. Please visit and compare this history with your own research of Benedict family history.
I'm writing a book on the Chickamauga Campaign and found the Benedict Diary at Stones River National Battlefield website. Page 25 (covering the battle of Chickamauga) is missing. Is it possible to get a copy of page 25? Dr. William G. Robertson [wrobertson@kc.rr.com]
