I would love to have the contact information for Evelyn's daughter. My great grandmother corresponded with Evelyn in 1980 for her book. I have 2 letters from Evelyn but nothing on what my great grandmother sent to her.

I also would be interested in obtaining a copy of the book as Evelyn mentioned in the second letter that she matched up our family to some census records and another Benefiel family.

The following information on John S. Benefiel is transcribed from the Evelyn Stout book (copy #267, publ 1983). Contact me if you want additional information on this family (I have the book).

Information on John S. Benefiel
from The Benefiel Families of Indiana and their Descendants
by Evelyn Benefiel Stout, published in 1983
(transcribed from copy #267 by Kim Troboy)

Dr. John S. He was buried in Johnson cemetery, 2.5 miles east of Carlisle, IN. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and served from Cumberland co, PA. He was a delegate from Knox co to the first [Indiana] State Constitutional Convention and signed the Indiana Constitution in 1816. He moved to Indian after 11 Oct 1814 and was living in Daviess co, IN, on 26 June 1821. After the Revolutionary War, they located at Hamilton co, OH, and lived in old Fort at Cincinnati where he helped survey the city.

John married Rebecca FitzJames in 1782 or 1783. Her family were Jacobites from Scotland who moved to America about 1778.

Children of John and Rebecca:
- Mary Benefiel (1783-1860)
- Robert Benefiel (1788-1837)
- John Benefiel (1791- [or could this be William 1791 – see Family T]
- Jesse J. Benefiel was a native of Ohio, and his wife, Eliza (Kackley) Benefiel of Kentucky (both census said from VA). In about 1843 Dr. Benefiel graduated from a Cleveland medical college and commenced the practice of medicine in Davis County. He was in Davis County about five years; then removed to Green co, IN, where he also remained five years. The next five years were at Sullivan co, IN; then in 1861 he moved his family to Mattoon, IL.

“Dr. Benefiel was a man of more than ordinary ability and succeeded in building up a large and lucrative practice; but he became involved in professional difficulty in 1867 and fled the country, abandoning his family. He was discovered at Craig, MO, about 1878, and made at least partial restitution to his family.

“He had moved to Hope co., MO, where he had made his permanent residence. His family consisted of five children, all of whom, with one exception, are now living. Their record is as follows: J. B., the subject of this sketch; Lucius K., a stock-dealer residing in Kansas; Mattie, the wife of J. S. Baker, who is the oldest conductor of the E. & T.H. RR; Jennie J., now Mrs. William Bradbury, a resident of Dodge City.”

I am trying to find out if my husband and I are even related to the Benefiels in this book. My husband doesn't really know his Dad so he doesn't know much about the Benefiel side. Does it talk about any Benefiels in Coffeyville, KS on page 423? My husband is from there. If so, I want to get that book if we are related. Can you give me a little info on the Benefiels in Coffeyville? Thank you SO MUCH!!
Sarah

Regarding Louise Benefiel. That is my mother. My mother has extensive research and books and I am continueing that. Our family lines go way back with the Benefiels to ireland and beyond. It was interesting finding you guys mentioning my mother. My Great Aunt"Dean" Benefiel just died who was a daughter of Rachel Bullock Benefiel. She gave my Mother all the extensive research. Well glad you all are doing research too. I do have a few loop holes. I am trying to find my paperwork on Jacob W. Benefiel's Father. Jacob was born 1823. I believe his father is Jesse Benefiel, but lost the document for the birthdate and death date. I believe it is 1800. Thanks.

THE NAME: B E N E F I E L

I have spent seven years studying and researching the name Bene'-
Fiel. The name means the following: "Bene' is a statement or a reference to a person- "Son of, (Sons)and "Fiel" is even simpler, but the most important Word in OUR BIBLE('s). Fiel is simply the old and new term for "Faith".

One of my references was the Missionary of The Catholic Church- Mr. Fiel. He told me, "I am proud and honored to have this name that our ancestors fought for and preserved; and you are also proud. "Son of Faith" is a direct reference to our Christian "Father Abraham", who made a Blood Covenant with GOD". A number of My Jewish Friends helped me with this project. by The Hon. B.J.

Hey Board!

I'm heading to Illinois for a research trip this week, and was trying to nail down some dates and places I've discovered from member trees and the Stout book. Does anyone know WHERE Jacob W. and Mary E. died? I'm assuming Lawrence Co., Ill. for Jacob W. and Marion Co. for Mary E (last census)... although cemetery surveys of both counties don't show either.

Thanks in advance for any help

Ben Bailey
Berkley, Michigan

I am looking for any information regarding the father of John S. Benefiel, he was born in 1813 in Ohio and was a doctor in Indiana. He married Eliza Jane Keckely/Kackley and their child is Lucius King Benefiel. Looking for as much information as you can provide. I have been trying to verify my information.
Thanks,
Liz Randolph

Hello,

My name is Jason Quick. I have been able to follow my family name on my Father's side all the way back to it origins & original spelling. The problem is I am trying to do the same with my Mother's side. Her Father's name was Freddie Lee Benefiel. My trail stops at William Benefiel who married Elizabeth Norton on March 12, 1787. I always thought it would be harder to trace my Father's name than my Grandfather's. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
I spoke with Mrs. Stout's (descendent of Peter from Group D) daughter about 7-8 years ago, well after her mother's passing. I found the number by searching the internet for all the Stouts in Cherokee, OK. It's a very small town. There weren't many. I think I reached her on the 3rd call.

She said her brother was the executor of her parent's estate and did have many books left, although there were some concerns that some of the people who sent money for the books had complained about not getting them. I had planned to drive there on a scheduled trip in the area, just to pick up one, but never did.

I have the number around here somewhere. If you are still interested, I will dig it up.

William Benefiel (James Riley Benefiel's Great Great Grandson)

Re: John W. Rebecca Summers Benefiel

I am trying to work through my relationships to John William Benefiel & Rebecca Summers and seem to be having some difficulty.
My name is Bruce Harrison in Aurora Colorado and know that David Henry Alspaugh and Ella Gertrude were my grand parents, and believe that Isaac Newton Benefiel & Elsy (spelling seems to be all over the place) Wilder Shaw are my great grand parents, and possibly John William Benefiel (or John Benefiel or William Benefiel) & Rebecca Summers are my great great grand parents.

I draw your attention to my difficulty with the names of John, John William, or William Benefiel, for according to my reading to my attachments and to this web site http://www.cemeteries-madison-co-in.com/prewett_cemetery.htm . According to my reading it seem that there was a John Benefiel and a William Benefiel.

Question, was William Benefiel the father of John Benefiel, for according to Samuel Harden a woman named Cynthia A Kidwell was William’s wife? The gravestone for Mary Jane Benefiel and Catharine were the daughters of John Benefiel and Rebecca Benefiel.

I have visited what I believe to be the grave of John William Benefiel in Zoar Cemetery, in Exline, Appanoose County, Iowa. The web site http://lowagravestones.org/gs_pfview.php?id=201053 is a picture of the gravestone. According to picture he was born on October 1793 and died September 25,1868.

Any and all help will be appreciated in obtaining an accurate picture of people and events.

Thank you very much

Hi Fred,

I just joined Ancestry.com and have been putting my family tree together. I've learned I am the great, great granddaughter of John McCandless and Nancy Benefiel. My grandmother was Alice McCandless Royston, the daughter of Grover and Nellie McCandless. I grew up in Central Montana (Moore) to be exact, and my parents still live on the ranch there. I loved my grandmother so much and would love to learn more about her family. I've actually found a great deal of information from your tree, so thanks in advance! Would love to keep in touch and learn more. Look forward to hearing from you.

Lisa Vanek Ricafrente

hi I would like to know if John Wesley Benefiel had any brothers. Or if his dad had any brothers. My dad Jack Benefiel is un clear as to who his grand parents were or their names. Jack's dad was Ross or Raymond and dads mom was Eilleen (kell) Benefiel. Ross was born in the early 1900's.Ross divorced Eilleen after dad was 15, about 1950 and married Jacquelen Preger. According to dad Ross had a brother Wilbur and sister Ethel. Niether Wilbur or Ethel had children.

I am bound and determined to find out positively who Amanda Benefield's parents are. I am hoping that our families connect. One of my cousins said she remembers her mother talking about a Demsey Benefield. She said the family all hid when they heard someone coming, not knowing it was their grandfather. This was during the civil war. I guess they were afraid of raiders.
Crystal

Hi Anne...`
I think this is what you want:

On page 368-369 THE BENEFIEL FAMILIES OF INDIANA AND THEIR DESCENDANTS by Evelyn Benefiel Stout 1983 of Cherokee, Okla, Book #245 of 800 copies owned by Sharon Benefiel Palmer; the following is mentioned about Samuel and Elizabeth Stewart.

_______
GENERATION TWO

"There is very little on this Samuel and his desc. He is possibly a brother to Robert 1750--or maybe another son to him---or he may belong to the Southern Branch,. According to the HISTORY OF VERMILION COUNTY, Samuel died in Ky and in 1826 his widow came with her son William H. to Vermilion Co. Ind. It does not say that William was the only son; it does not say that there were no other children who came with her. So, I am adding Samuel 1816 below--but placing him in another chapter.
Dear Sharon,
I would be interested to know if there is anything written about Samuel Benefiel and Elizabeth Stewart's decendants (or ancestors) they married 1799 in Kentucky. They were born in Penn. He possibly 1774 and she about 1784. Thank, I am a direct desendant of this line. Their son William H. and his first wife Mary Hunt were my G.g.g.grandparents.
Anne Hathaway
