Hello, I don't know for certain, but I think you are one of my relatives. My great grandmother Isabella Binford had brothers named Starling,William(who lived in Chatanooga,Tennessee),and Alex. Their parents were Ed and Zilpha Binford. I think at one point Starling was married to Maggie Raney, if so, we are related. We were invited to the Benford Family Reunion in Athens, Alabama also.

This isn't exactly about your inquiry. I acquired a wedding portrait recently that on the back says Arthur Benford and Ellen Lynch Benford. It is large (10 x13 in) and the outfits seem to fit the right period to be your family. If this is your grandfather and grandmother, I like to send it to you. I'm including a scan of the faces to see if you recognize them.

My Grandfather name was Wiley Benford, I'm not for sure if he was a jr. or sr. It is my understanding, that my family is related to the benford's in Athens alabama. My grandfather(wiley)benford, dad name was Burton Benford and his father name was Dank benford. This information was pass alonged to me by my grandmother (mary lou Crawford)benford. Mary Lou Crawford and Wiley Benford live in alabama before moving to Louisville, Ky. One other thing;looking at the Ky. registry it shows that Burton and Mamie Benford the parents of Wiley Benford all live together at one time. So,looking at the Benfords men in my family's tree and to the best of my knowlege, goes as follow:Dank Benford, Burton Benford, Wiley Benford. Wiley and Mary Lou(crawford)Benford had seven children, their names are;Hoarce, Claude, Morris, Roy,John lewis Coleman, Nancy, Arlene and Darlene Benford.

When I went down to Tennessee a couple of months ago my aunt called her uncle James Benford and he was able to give me the information on Zilpha, Ed, and their son; my great-great grandfather Starling Binford (Simeol Sr.'s brother)

Almost all of Emma Brooks'(Leona's sister)grandchildren live in Tennessee. I still go down every summer to visit.

Do you have any information on Clem Brooks and his wife Martha Lowe? I have run into a road block with them.

It looks like Simeol and Sim might be the same person.

Also, it looks like at some point Benford was spelled Binford. Simeol's parents were Ed and Zilpha Binford.

My grandmother tells me that there were two sets of Benfords. One set were owned by the Benford Family and the other set were born to slave women from free Benford men.

I am told that there were a group of brothers that could "pass" and were allowed to leave. As they traveled, they decided to seperate.

A free Benford that was in Arkansas married a woman named Sarah. Him and Sarah moved to Texas. They didn't take on slaves but paid the servants (what i read) This is the line that I come from.

My grandmother actually met my grandfather's grandfather and she described him as a very tall irish man with bright red hair and a bright red beard. She said this man was huge.
My family starts out at 6'4. The Benfords are recorded as coming through Ellis Island and being from Ireland.

Looking for information about the Tchula, Mississippi Benfords. My maternal great-grandfather is Frank Benford. My grandmother is Inez Jenkins, her sisters are Lula Pearl, Essie B, Louise Blue. They had a brother, Frank Jr. who went away, and never went back to Mississipp. We were told that he went to California. Upon research he was probably in military. I am interested in how the Benfords came upon Tchula. I believe Frank Sr. was born in Arkansas, and died in Mississippi. I believe that the lineage possibly just slave owners were the Brandts' and Benfords'. Please help, this is fun. 13 years ago there was a Benford Family Reunion in Detroit. But I am very much interested in learning the Paternal Bendord side.

As for his son John and Elizabeth (Ling) did go to Elkhart county, Indiana sometime during the 1830's. THe answer's you are searching for are in the Pennsylvania State Archives and several local books to Westmoreland County Pennsylvania.
Hi Christine
I have had another look at my records, this time of marriages in St Martin and found the following

Thomas quarter ending Jun 1840
Elizabeth quarter ending Jun 1847
William quarter ending September 1848
Henrietta Martha quarter ending December 1848

Then no further marriages until 1918. Theses include your Willaim and the others could be siblings.

I have also had a look at my email records, would you be the same Christine as I corresponded with in February 2005? Have you been in touch with Ray on GenesConnected who also was William born 1818 in his tree?

Roy
I am puzzled. I have a Benford extract of the national register of births. The only William listed for Jul-Aug-Sep quarter 1848 was in Kettering. This agrees with the 1861 census which only lists one William born around 1848 and that they were born in Kettering and still living there with parents Nathaniel & Sarah.

Perhaps, you need to recheck the birth registration details you have.

I have a William Benford living with James Benford in the 1841 census both aged 20 and both printers. My James is son of Thomas and Elizabeth née Vardeille or Wood). William might have been a brother to James or possibly a cousin, but I iam sure there is a connection. I have information about a William Benford marrying Elizabeth and they had several children: Elizabeth b. 1850, Mary Ann b. 1852, William, George, Thomas, Alfred F, Edith and Hanrietta (possibly your Henrietta Martha).
Let me know if this is of any help. I would also be interested in getting information on what you have found out.
Regards,
Philip

My Benford line left Kettering at the beginning of the 19th century and moved to Stanion before moving to Derby. My research points to the Kettering line starting with one Thomas Benford who married Sarah Stanley on 16th December 1708 in Kettering. However, I have never managed to unravel the 18th century births and marriages.

My records of Benford births and marriages shows:-

Henry George F's birth as being registered in the December quarter 1887 in Kettering District.

His marriage is registered in June quarter 1919 to Flanagan in Kettering District.

The following births are registered with a maidenname of Flanagan:-

Henry J J, June quarter 1920 in Rotherham District.
Beatrice A & Doris R, September quarter 1927 in Kettering District.
Ernest W, December quarter 1930 in Kettering District.
June E, June quarter 1933 in Kettering District.
Margaret R, September quarter 1935 in Kettering District.

Unfortunately, there is a gap in my records of births from 1921 to 1926 inclusive. If you are in the UK, your central library probably has a copy of the index and the index records mother's maidenname from 1911.
I have a William Benford in my family tree. I do not think I have any information that you are asking for, but I would be interested to know what other information you might have (or received since posting your message). I thinkWilliam had a son Thomas who had several children, including Ada (my great grandmother) and twins Harriet and Martha. I know they all lived in the area of St Marylebone in London during the 19th century. I have been in touch with a "Benford" who thinks he might be linked to my side of the family though he has some doubts on this. I am happy to share as much information as I have and also have some photos of the women mention above. I look forward to hearing from you.

Will there be a family reunion of the Benfords in the Somerset Pa area? I seem to remember that is was held the last weekend in July.

I have had some emails and conversions with David Benford from that area in the past. However, this cousin seems to have stopped posting.
