Benko in Saskatchewan

I am searching for Benko's that settled in Saskatchewan. they would be of Russian/Czech desent. My grandfather Nikolaus Benko was born in Regina around 1912 and died dec.17 1977. We are not related to the Punnichy Benko's so this makes me believe that the spelling has changed on the last name. My grandmother's family is from Odessa Russia and her family settled in Devils Lake N.D. then moved on to Francis and then Odessa Saskatchewan. I am wondering if they would have all been in the same area. Where would I look for info??? Please help Thanks Tracy

Benko family from Slovenia, Hungary - 1800s and 1900s

Hi - my girlfriend's Great Grandfather Sandor Benko was born on 9 October 1888 in Gradina, Bohinj, Slovenia and married Borbala Makk on 4 March 1916. Borbala was born on 10 September 1895 in Dombovar, Tolna, Hungary.

Sandor Benko's father was Istvan Benko and he was born on 26 December 1863 but not sure where he was born (probably Slovenia as well). I don't know who he married unfortunately.

Any connections out there?

best wishes
Phil

Re: Vincenz Benko?

Update: I am not sure if the birthday and immigration information are correct.

Ethel M Benko, Vincenz and Marion's daughter, was born in czechoslovakia, and she immigrated in 1907 or 1908, so I believe her parents would have come with her at that time. The birthday of 1873 I got was from a passenger list, which I don'tthink is correct.

I am looking for the parents of a Vincent/Vincenz Benko. Vincent was born in 1873 in Hungary. He came to New York on 7 May 1890. He married Marion Swetlik (spelling on either first or last name may be slightly off) and they had a daughter named Ethel M Benko, born in 1891. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks. :)

My husband's maternal grandfather, Stif or Steven Benka, 1881 and died 1951 came from Slovakia in the early 1900s (guessing on this). He married Ursula Kovacks and between 1908 and 1919 six children were born to them. Ursula died in late 1919. The children were counted twice in the 1920 census: once in their home with their widowed father and 12 days later in St. Michael's Orphan Asylum in Mercer, New Jersey Hopewell Township, Both Steven and Ursula are buried at Saints Phillip and James Cemetery
Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey.

The six children were:
John 11
Anna 10
Catherine 7
George 4
Stephen M. 2
Mary age 0 (1 month)

I know the fate of all but Mary who was learned two nights ago as I researched Ancestry.com

Anyone who can assist will be greatly appreciated.

Mildred Vuris (Vurosics)

My husband, the artist Richard Ray Bruland is the son of Mary Kiss and Raymond Bruland. Mary's parents were Joseph Kiss and Anna Mihalovits. Anna was born in Hungary in the 1880's. I have really just begun to work on the Kiss and Bruland geneology so I need all the help (info) I can get. Mary just died in January at 93 years. She was an amazing hooker (rugs and wall hangings). She was a great cook too, but always told me her mother Anna was the most talented chef. Anna worked as a chef for the Wrigleys of chewing gum fame. Her husband died in New Mexico before Mary was born.

Benko Nameology

http://www.radixindex.com/public/pv001013.htm

Check this out...the numbers in parenthesis indicate the total
number of persons named in the Industry and trade directory of
Hungary in 1891 Most frequent surnames listing:

Benkõ (252)

Benkõ (125), Benke (49), Benkó (38), Benko (35), Benka (5)

If I am "off base," please let me know...or if anyone knows
any Slovakian name pronunciations, feel free to share.

I did a little spellingology because my family changed their
name from a Hungarian version of Benka to the Slovakian
Pronunciation of Benka. I do not know any Slovakian or
any Hungarian, but I am armed with a Hungrarian Dictionary.
I assumed that my families real sir name was Banko because
of family verbal stories, but I now think that it might have
been either Benkõ, Benke, Benkó, or Benko.

See table below:

Hungarian Pronunciation
Phonetic
Spelling Pronunced Symbols Spelling Remarks
Benkõ Benka æ, ur Bænku 125
Benke Benka æ, æ Bænkæ 49
Benko Benka æ, aw Bænkaw 35
Benkó Benka æ, aw Bænkaw 38
Benka Benka æ, o Bænka 5

Symbol Phonetics
æ – like e in yes with mouth more open
ur – like ur in fur without any "r" sound
aw – as in saw
aw – as in saw with tongue higher in mouth
o – like o in not

Dan Benka

Hello,
The John (Janos or Ivan) Benko came over around 1905, not too sure if he came with my grandmother's brothers. But just recently, I found him in South Bend, Indiana in 1907, as he was godparent, along with his wife, Anna Farkas (maiden name) to Steve Farkas, Jr. Records verified from St. Stephen's Church in South Bend. Steve Farkas is my grandmother's nephew, and her brothers were Stephen Farkas Sr. and Alexander Farkas. The only thing that might match with your John Benko is the year he came over. I think my John Benko was much older. Nadine

Hi Danette. You will not believe this, but some Anna Farkas' (my grandmother) are living in Bulgaria, from a son she had to leave behind, Julius Benko, the name DANA is still alive, which may be a dirivitive from your name. Julius's grandson married a Dana Velkova! Their children are Ivo and Diana. This is getting very interesting. Also, please look at the thread to this message, as we also have another family member from the Deka side inquiring. If Leo is interested, I also have another family member from a Daniel, who is the son to Margaret Farkas Post, daughter to Alex Farkas. Perhaps we could all get together and send group emails to update one another. This is very exciting to me. I am happy to share all the information gathered on the Farkas marriages that I have found (most are verified).

Hello Ronald, if the below is your uncle, then we definitely have a connection.
Leo J. Deka July 23, 1914-Aug. 10, 1995, South Bend Tribune, Obituaries, August 11, 1995:
NILES - Leo J. Deka, 81, of Shady Shore Drive, died at 11:40 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. Deka retired in 1976 from Bendix Corp., South Bend, as a tool and die grinder after 36 years of service. He was born July 23, 1914, in South Bend and had lived in Niles since 1954. On June 5, 1935, in South Bend, he married Anna Farkas. She survives with three daughters, Roseann Taelman of South Bend, Carol Mendenhall of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Christine Curran of Phoenix; a son, Donald D. of Suwanee, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 9. Services will be at 1 p.m. (Indiana time) Saturday in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from from 5 to 8 p.m. (Indiana time) today in the funeral home.

Anna Farkas is the neice to my grandmother, Anna Farkas (Benko) Szabo. I have been able to find a lot of information on the Farkas family members in my attempt to know more about my dear grandmother and their origins over in Hungary. Her brothers were Alex and Steve Farkas.

Anna Farkas, daughter to Steve Farkas, married Leo Farkas, and their children were: Rosanne, Carol, Christine, and Donald. At this juncture, I have no information, except the names of their children, guessing at birth dates, etc. From Anna (Farkas) Deka's obit, I know Rosanne married a Taleman, Carol a Mendenhall, and Christine a Curan, At the time, Donald D. Deka was from Lawrenceville, GA.

If we are connected, perhaps we can build more on our family trees. Looking forward to hearing from you! Nadine (daughter to Anton T. Szabo (Benko), grandaughter to Anna Farkas Szabo-Benko).
Do you have any more information on John Benko (Ivan in Bulgaria, Janos in Hungarian)? Could they be from Daruvar, Pozsega, Croatian (formerly Yugoslavia, and before that - Hungary, or the Austria-Hungarian Empire)? My Aunt Julia (Benko) stated she was born in Daruvar on her passport, listing Ivan Benko as her father, Anna Farkas as her mother.

Ivan may also have had another family overseas. Thank you, Nadine
