Re: Richard Stewart Bennefield

Richard Stewart Bennefield was known as Stewart Bennefield when he married Elizabeth Dewitt, December 6, 1832. I know of two children a Haram R. and Peter V. Bennefield. In 1840 Richard Stewart Benefiel was divorced from Elizabeth Dewitt in 1841.

In 1841 Elizabeth Dewitt remarried a Michael Rice in shelby county.

Richard Stewart Benefiel remarried to a Susan Lamphier in 1843. This must have been a short lived marriage as he was divorce and started a new family in Savanna, Illinois.

His first child with Martha Reiber was in 1848, according to my records. I am related threw his daughter Margaret who was born in 1856. They had five children together Oillo, Ellen, James, Lucetta, and Margaret.

The information gathered by Lucetta Belle Benefiel is as follows.

Richard Stewart Benefiel
Born: April 24, 1803, Bourbon County, Kentucky
Died: February 5, 1877, Savanna,Carrol County, Illinois

"I have found him listed in many census records under the following names."

Stewart Bennefield
Stewart Benefield)
Richard S Benefiel

"His parents are presumed to be Samuel Benefiel and Elizabeth "Betsy Stewart, they married March 21, 1799."

Samuel was born about 1774 in Pennsylvania or Kentucky. He died in Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana, March 17, 1854. He first appeared in the tax list in Boubon County, Kentucky, in 1795. Later moving to butler County, Ohio around July of 1817. He is presumed to have died shortly after 1829.

Other family members are working on this family tree; maybe you all can help each other out. you can contact me and ask questions and I will help you all I can. Cecelia Bennefield

I would love any information you could offer. I just recently started working on this and am having a hard time finding some information. Thank you in advance for anything you can give me.

It may take me a few days (I'll have to check with my mom) but should be able to provide all 12 children of William and Molley. Of the 12 children 5 are still with us. Between the 11 children that grew up there are approximately 33 grandchildren. I think my mom knows most if not all of their birthdates. She will be here this weekend and I will get as much as I can from her. We have a lot of pictures but that will take a little longer.

Thanks again,
Cindy Keever
kncekeever@aol.com or cynthiakeever@yahoo.com

James Bedingfield

I found a James Beddingfield in Conuche County, Alabama around 1850 or 1860. There had been a Charles and a Henry there about 20 years earlier and then he showed up in the census records in that county. You may want to check that out to see if it might be the same James. The spellings of the name often went between Benefield-Bennefield or Bedingfield-Bedingfield. They are the same family, so you might check the Bedingfield or Beddingfield spelling.

If you are looking for Hardy then check the Bedingfield message board. The spellings were used for the same person from one census year to the next. Any one who is a Bennefield, Benefield or any spelling like that must go back to the Bedingfield spelling and you will find some of the info you are looking for. In my census records for Alabama and Mississippi I have both spellings for the same people. So please check Bedingfield and Beddingfield.

I have found that Bennefield is mispelled due to the pronounciation. My father was a great one for saying his name was Albert Benafield, when it was really Bennefield. My family is mostly from GA & FL. Hardy was my g-grandfather. I found that he was Thomas Hardy. There was an Eli Hardy in Tampa FL in the late 1800's. Where is your family from? E-mail me at latrelle@xtalwind.net Maybe we can compare notes & learn more from each other.

I am desperately looking for my grandfather’s kids. You see my grandfather Allen C. Bennafield (not sure of the spelling) was married to a lady I believe her name is Nellie Bennafield (not sure of spelling). He had kids by his first wife. He then moved to Ohio and married my grandmother, which he then had five kids. I was told that my grandfather changed the spelling of his last name. I know that he had a sister name Rosa Bennafield (not sure if she spelled her name Bennafield, Benefield or Bennefield). My Uncle’s believe he was born in Jacksonville, Florida. I believe that my grandfather was 52 years of age when he died in 1948. If that’s the case then he should have been born in 1898. I am unable to find any birth or death certificate on my grandfather. My father is the oldest child from his second marriage. He is 71 years of age. If anyone can help bring my lost family together I would greatly appreciate your help.

I am a descendant of James K. Bennefield and his father Needham Benefield. He was probably the son of William Needam Bedingfield of Wake Co, NC. I have a large book on the Benefield, Bennefield, Bedingfield families compiled by Charlene Frances Gifford Bakkensen. She was not able to find positive proof that the line connected to William Bedingfield but there are a lot of indications. I am trying to verify her work and fill-in some of the blank. Would love to share data with other interested researchers.
Wayne
