I am also trying to find out more about Samuel Bennington and Nancy Gaines. His daughter Lorani (misspelled many ways...it was Lorance in the 1860 census) moved to Pleasanton Kansas in 1869 reportedly with her parents according to her obituary. They settled about 3 miles south of town at the old Milton James farm. She was married in 1871 at the home of Ezekiel Rice and was in his household in the 1870 census.

Re: John L Bennington

According to ancestry.com, there’s a John T Bennington and Sarah C Young who were married in Indiana 16 Jan 1879 (no county listed.) [Don’t take the middle initial as “gospel,” I’ve seen typos before.]

There’s a John and Sarah Benington in the 1880 Census whose ages fit:

Name: John Benington
Home in 1880: Benton, Monroe, Indiana
Age: 21
Estimated birth year: abt 1859
Birthplace: Indiana
Relation to head-of-household: Self (Head)
Spouse's name: Sarah
Father's birthplace: Kentucky
Mother's birthplace: Indiana
Occupation: Farmer
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male

Using this John’s age and his father’s birthplace, there’s a man who is a near match in the 1860 Census:

Name: John L Beningtond
Age in 1860: 1
Birth Year: abt 1859
Birthplace: Indiana
Home in 1860: Union, Shelby, Indiana
Gender: Male
Post Office: Manilla
Household Members: Name Age
J C Beningtond 44
Sarah Beningtond 37
Charles R Beningtond 17
Emily F Beningtond 13
Sirena J Beningtond 10
Margaret E Beningtond 7
Mary L Beningtond 4
John L Beningtond 1
Barbara Wright 69

Of course, all this is just a few “educated guesses,” but it may provide clues in your search. Good luck!

Elizabeth Bennington/ James Crail

Looking for information on James Crail born about 1760 who married Elizabeth Bennington in 1780 in Fleming County, Kentucky I think. Elizabeth was born about 1765 or 1769 in Harford, Maryland. They had five children that I know of, Sarah, William, Isabel, and Elizabeth. James died before 1790. Elizabeth remarried in 1795 to Issac Fulton and had five children with him. I think most of the family moved to Illinois in about 1836. I need information for James Crail, parents names, sibling names, where they were from etc. I think they were from Kentucky and Virginia before Kentucky became a state. I'm stuck now and haven't been able to find any Crails that match the info that I have. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it. I am happy to share any information that I have.

My information comes from a publication called WILLIAM BENNINGTON OF FLEMING COUNTY, KY. It says that Sarah Bennington was born about 1756, probably in Harford County, MD. Her mother is unknown, but her father was William Bennington. She was a sister to my ancestor, Constance Bennington. She married Stephen Jones April 29, 1780 in Harford Co., MD. She and Stephen had the following children: William, Thomas, Samuel, Stephen, Aquilla, Benjamin, Isaac and James. Sarah died June 21, 1833, Fleming County, KY, during a cholera epidemic. Her father, William, was the son of Henry and Sarah Harris Bennington. Henry's father was supposed to be Moses Bennington.

I descend from Isaac's sister Sarah Ann Bennington. I do not have any more info about Samuel, but also am looking. I do, however, have a photograph and some info on Sarah if you are interested.
Please email me at:
mtnjewel@hotmail.com

Thanks,
jess

Samuel Bennington/Lawrence County OH

I am looking for information on Samuel Bennington. He starts appearing in Lawrence county OH censuses in 1840, and disappears after 1860. He was born in Pennsylvania. He married twice; first to Margaret Moore 11/26/1840, then to Nancy Gaines 8/5/1849. Both marriages took place in Lawrence county. From census accounts, I estimate he was born between 1807 and 1810. Some of his children were Sarah, Susan, Isaac (my great-great grandfather), Samuel, and William. I am hoping to find where he came from in PA and when he died. Thank you.

My husband is Donald Guthrie Jr. His father is Don Guthrie and his mom is Nancy Bennington. Nancy's father (my husbands grandfather) was Elbert Bennington. Elbert had been married twice and had a total of five children: Elbert Jr., Nancy, Steve, Bonnie and Dan. How is your grandma doing? Most of us live in the Cincinnati area. Does your grandma live in Ohio?

Thanks, but I have all the info about that family. If you don't mind me asking, what is your husband's father's name? He would be my grandma's 1st cousin and she might have known him growing up. She had to move away from that side of her family when she was young and lost track of all her cousins. I'm sure she would love to know how her relatives are doing.

That is probably my gg grandfather, Charles Edward Bennington (he went by his middle name), b. 1882 d.1968. He married Nancy Jane Bennington (not an error in last name, they were 2nd cousins). she was born 1880 and died 1929.
Charles Edward lived in Adams co, Ohio all his life. Nancy was born in Brown co, then moved to Adams co.
I know they had 8 children. My g grandmother was Laura Lee Bennington. Other children were: twins Pearl (who I think is still living) and Earl, Ollie, Bessie, Elbert, Jessie, and Ethel. Sound familier?

I read your posting today (August 20, 2004) on the ancestry.com website. I am an Oregon adoptee. I have some information that may or may not be of interest to you. You mention in your posting that there may be an adoption in your family. I was born in Medford, Oregon. I would be interested in potentially finding out more details. Because the date of your posting was in 2001, I am not sure you are still looking on this website.
Thanks
Elizabeth "Liz" Kellow

It's good to hear from others looking for Bennington's from Lincolnshire. Our gggrdfather was an only child, but his father did have a brother William and he would have had cousins with that name. IT would depend on which part of Lincolnshire your William came from. Our family were from Great Grimsby.

Hi Richard,
County Durham is more my area of interest. You can rule out the Bishop Auckland registration, because that John Thomas is still around in 1901 in the north, and his father was not a mason (1881 census).

One other thing worth tying, once you have worked through my earlier list of suggestions, is to contact the local record office directly, to see if they have a John son of William registered around the right time. Very occasionally records disappeared in the transfer of data between the local office and the GRO, so may not appear in the GRO index.

Failing a birth certificate, try searching local parish registers (assuming they were C of E) for a baptism.

Regards,

Helen - yes, I think it is the family you show from 1881. I have looked at the original census image, and the letter transcribed as a "J" could easily be a "T".

But this does not satisfy me if I can't find his birth. Maybe I'm too fussy, but I'm very wary of going down wrong paths in my family research as a result of insufficient care in checking all the facts.

Do you have any other information or advice for me? Are you an expert in Bennington genealogy?

Thanks for your interest!

Benningtons in Langtoft, Lincolnshire, England

I am researching my wife's family history. Her great grandfather was John Thomas Bennington, born in 1871, apparently in Langtoft, Lincolnshire.

The trouble is, there were two John Thomas Benningtons born that year in that village, cousins I think. One was the son of John and Elizabeth Bennington, who died 3 weeks later (I have the birth and death certificates). The one I am interested in did not die, he married Gertrude Emma Smith on 30 November 1895 in Duddington, Northamptonshire, England.

On the marriage certificate, his father is given as William Bennington, a mason.

So, what's the problem? It is that there is only one birth of a John Thomas Bennington in the GRO index for this area. There is one for Bishop Auckland, but that is in Durham, a long way from Langtoft, where the family lived all their lives. Has anyone else come across this problem? Can anyone help me to find the correct birth of the correct John Thomas Bennington, so I can verify his parents.

Thanks in advance

I'm a bit stuck. I've been able to gather data to 1841 on Simon Bennington. The census says his father was born in PA so not really sure where to go from there. Any ideas?

Please email me at rbenning@columbus.rr.com

Sharon, Sorry I did not get back to you, I have been away and then found a virus on my computer and thencouldnt work out which mail I had returned. Unfortunately I don't know too much more on the Benningtons side only that an Ivan Bennington married my grandmother, Gladys Gibbs, nee Borland when they were in ther 70's. They were originally childhood sweethearts but both went on to marry someone else and came together again late in life. I beleive that both Ivan and my nana came from Rangiora originally, but I have not followed through on this side of the family. I will keep you on file and if I find anything more on my Ivan in the future, I will give you a call. Thanks for your help.
Sue
