Lelesz, Hungary (Slovakia) Beno's

Hi All
I'm researching again for Beno ancestors from Lelesz, Zemplen, Slovakia, formerly Hungary. More specifically for records around the mid to late 1800's and of course, earlier for brother's and sisters of Andrew Beno b. 1862 who came to the USA in 1890-91.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I apologize for not finding it sooner. As I understand the story, there was a family "falling out" during the Prohibition and the name spelling was changed from Bino to Beno. My great-grandfather, Andrew Beno, who lived in Conneaut, Ohio, was the angry one who changed the name spelling and disowned part of the family. I think I met aunts of yours in Astabula several years ago. Their father was James Bino. Is Jamie a cousin of yours?
Thanks for your reply. I'd like to hear about your trip to Hungary.
Happy New Year
Denise Beno

Hi Edward! Thanks for your post. My cousin-once removed, Joe Beno, told me a story about taking a road trip to visit some cousins in Oshawa Ontario. He said it was a wild drunken visit! :) He was not sure how they were related, but knew they were cousins, so I knew I had distant relations there. Do you know if your grandfather and great uncle came to Oshawa directly from Lelesz or by way of Ohio? I would be interested in swapping info/research if you are. I would also like to hear stories of Lelesz. I have some aerial photos of Lelesz and the surrounding area that I would be happy to share with you.
Thanks for your post. Happy New Year.
Denise Beno

Hello, I feel bad that I just found your post now. I am a Bino decsendant. My grandfather Antal/ Anthony and his brother Jozsef/Jozsi/Joe came to Oshawa Ontario Canada in the late 20's/30's. They were born in Lelesz Zemplen County Hungary, now Leles Zemplin County Slovakia.
I have visited the large village pop. approx. 4000 a few times. There are quite a few Bino's still living there and in the vicinity. There also a few Bino family's who are related in name only.
There are a few Bino family's in Oshawa.
All the best in your search
Edward Minacs

My Benoe family came from Belguim also. John J. Binon is the furthest back I can go. He and his wife were in Bellevue, Brown Wisc. in the 1860 US Census with 5 of their children. Francois bp-Belguim, Sibille bp-Belguim, Ferdinand bp-Wisc., Mary bp-Belguim, and Victor bp-Belguim (my direct line). The Binon name transformed to Beno, Benoe, Bino. I even found birth records of Ferdinand (I think he americanized his name to Fred) where Binon is crossed out and Bino and Beno is written above it. Just curious if we are linked and we can share info.

Denise,
I have rented the church records of Leles Hungary and there are a lot of Bino's in there. My grandfather Lajos Vilagi came from Leles in the early 1900's. I can look something up if you would like. I should still have those microfilms until mid August. The films have birth, death and marriage from 1720-1899.
Mike Vilagi

Beno/Bineau/Binau

I just wanted to add to this forum a clarification on families. It seems to me that there several distinct lines which have nothing to do with one another. There are the two Beno families whose descendants may get very mixed up because of the nearness of the areas they are in. The Beno family whose center is the Green Bay, Wisconsin area and the Beno family whose center is from Quebec to the Windsor/Detroit region and then there are the Slovac ones.

Some of the Beno families from the Windsor/Detroit region are to be found in Michigan as well as Ontario and Quebec so be very careful in assigning your family to one group or the other. These mainly Ontarian families descend from Jean Bineau dit Lajeunesse and many of them were involved in the fur trade.

My Beno/Benno ancestors are from Birkenwald, Bas Rhin, France which is about 30 miles west of Strasbourg. They emigrated through New Orleans to St. Louis in January, 1853. For more detail, see my earlier posting or contact me directly.

It may be fruitful to check the civil record films for Birkenwald to look for family who possibly emigrated to Hungary or Slovakia. My impression is that these emigrants came to the US much later than my family and may have made an intermediate stop in Hungary or Czechoslovakia. The civil record films for Birkenwald are available for rental through the LDS church. I have them on permanent loan in the Mesa AZ Family History Library if you visit the AZ area. Birkenwald was about 600 people at its most populated time. There are 10 year indexes of the civil records which make looking for your family after 1790 quite easy.

My immediate family ran Beno's Department store in Council Bluffs, IA from 1866 to about 1988.

I may now be reached at cebeno@cox.net rather than cebeno@home.com since Excite@home is no longer in business.
Carolyn Beno
Scottsdale AZ

looking for lost Beno's

I'm researching Beno's (Bino) from the Zemplin area of former Hungary. My family came from Lelesz, Hungary in the late 1800's. (currently in Slovakia). My great-grandfather was Andrew Bino, 1862-1951. His father was either Imre or Janos Bino, d. 1899 in Hungary. Andrew Bino came to America around 1890-92. He did not come thru Ellis Island. Supposely he joined a brother already living here in the Ashtabula/Conneaut, Ohio area. In 1900, Andrew's wife, Maria Urban and one daughter, also named Maria, came to live with him here in the States. He also changed the spelling of Bino to Beno.

I'm looking for Andrew's brother, who was here in the States prior to 1892 in the Conneaut/Ashtabula area of Ohio. I do not have a name or any dates.

I'm also interested in the ethnicity of the Beno (Bino) family in the Lelesz, Hungary area. One Ellis Island record shows Andrew Bino's wife as Hungarian, speaking Magyar; and the record for his oldest daughter Anna Bino (Palagyi) says ethnicity is Austrian, speaking Slovack.

As far as I am aware, I'm not related to the Beno's in the Wisconsin area--or the Beno's coming from Belgium.

Thank you for any information you may be able to share.
