I have began researching my family whose surname was Benoy and lived in Richmond area in early 1900's. My ggrandfather was Edgar W. Benoy Sr. who first married Mary Jane Quick on November 1906. Edgar's parent's were William T. and Kate Benoy both of which should have been born around 1853 according to 1910 census. If anyone has any information to help me I would appreciate it.
KQueen

Read your postings re James Benoist. We are descendents of William Benoist. Perhaps James and Samuel were brothers or cousins. My Benoist's come from the Rockingham area earliest noted info is 1840-50 where they are listed as "Benaiste". Am looking for paper-proof that William is the son of Samuel. Census proximity makes it likely but other documentation is desired. William married a Nancy Catherine Kelly born in Tennesee. I wonder if people really moved that much or if boundary lines just shifted frequently or both. How are you descended from Eliza Ann Caroline Benoist? I have ancesters with all three of these names.

It has been a long time and I apologize. I've had difficulty w/my e-mail. I sent you a personal e-mail on Oct 22, 07. I am so anxious to talk w/ you and share what I have. My great grandfather was James Harold Riley whose brother was William L.Riley. Their parents were Susan Horine and William L.Riley. Susan, James, William, Jr. and Blanche (marr. Philip Haugh) and Susan's mother, Elizabeth James Horine came to Springfield, IL in 1871 from Missouri. William Jr. left Springfield as an adult and we don't know what happened to him. Nor do we know what happened to their father, William Louis Riley after Susan divorced him in 1870 in Jefferson, Co. MO in 1870. Would so like to share information and would like to send you a copy of Marie-Catherine Sanguinet (Sanguinette)Benoist's photo. Please e-mail me at noblehouse8@insightbb.com whenever convenient. Thank you, Kathy

He lived in Ironton,MO, I believe as did my great-grandfather, James Harold Riley, grand son of Adeleine Benoist and James M. Riley, great- grandson of Marie Sanguinet & François Benoist. That's after he left his wife in the 20's. James H. Riley & his mother settled us in Illinois. I'll check it out. where are you from?
thanks,
Kathy

Great! I think taking over that position is going to be one of the best things I've done. For years, I only paid attention to the family that I saw on a regular basis. I really met so many "new" people last year and am really looking forward to this year's reunion. One of the things I really want to do is have everyone fill out their personal family history so that we can verify what I have and print out a family tree for the reunion. It's a little overwhelming, but so far, I am really enjoying the conversations I have had. I look forward to hearing from you soon. jth

Yes, there are other Benoists in North Carolina still. For many of them, the name changed to Benway. You also find the name as Benwar. Unfortunately, aalthough I am absolutely convinced my James is part of this same group, as I've said before, I cannot prove it. The only other surname that I know to be connected to the North Carolina group is Batton.

I have emailed you census records for James Benoist in North Carolina and Mississippi from 1820 to 1880. James Benoist is my ggggrandfather. Unfortunately, although there is quite a bit of documentation for Benoists in South Carolina and North Carolina, I have found nothing that confirms that my James is the same one in either state. Of course, the most difficult thing is that the name is almost never spelled the same way twice.

You may have seen my posts, but I strongly believe my Benoist family came from the Charleston/St. Johns area. I believe that, from there, they traveled to the Richmond, North Carolina area. Unfortunately, I can't prove any of this. My ancestor was James Benoist who was born in South Carolina ca. 1801.

I don't know which James. He was born ca. 1801 in South Carolina and, I believe, shows up in Richmond County NC in 1820, 1830, and 1840. By 1850 he was in DeSoto Co. MS and in Calhoun County in 1860. At that time he was a Methodist minister affiliated with the Memphis-area Methodists. However, the only record I have found of him through the Methodist Church are two references in the journal of another Methodist minister in that area. In the 1840 census, he has the appropriate number of children, but the sexes are wrong. In 1850, his son Francis is listed as female. James Benoist does not appear in 1870. If his wife does, she is now called Nancy. However, she is in the 1880 census with her son John Christopher Benoist. James's older children were born in NC, his younger ones in TN and MS. Family history says James and Elizabeth Benoist were buried in Water Valley, MS, but I haven't found their graves yet. If you know anything that could connect my James to anyone else or prove that the James in Richmond County, NC is not the same as mine, please let me know.

Hi Jim,
I'm from the same line as you. My G Grandfather was Carolyns brother, James Henry Benoy. He lived in Fayetteville, NC, and is buried there. I visited his grave this week. His parents, of course, were Alexander and Virginia Pardilla Loudon Benoy. I have some info on both I am happy to share. I would also love to see what youve got! I have not found anything of Sam and Kizzie. Several from this board are looking however, and I am hoping one of us will hit onto something. Again, be happy to share with you what I do have.
Hi, I too am a Benoist descendant. My mother Carolyn Ann Benoy was born in Hamlet, NC. We have trace easily back to Alexander Benoy/Benoist my third great-grandfather, but have difficulty after that. We think his parents were Samual Benoist and Keziah Batton. Anything you have would be helpful. Thanks,
Jim Rassette

i can find very little on the Benoist family. my notes are at least 5 years old. I will recap what i have.
1. James Benoist is on the list of original congregation of French Hueganut Church in 1685.
2. James Benoist is listed in 1755 census.
3. Peter Benoist listed on land grant of 1737.
4.1860 Cahoun County SC census list a Minister James Benoist and Elizabeth (unknown) Benoist. Their children are:
Nancy born in 1835 in North Carolina.
Mary born North Carolina
Cornelius born North Carolina
Francis born North Carolina
John born Mississippi
Susan born Tennessee
James born Tennessee
5. James Benoist born South Carolina 1801 and his wife Elizabeth born Georgia 1808.

most of this was taken from ancestery.com records but i never found these census to validate.

Dear mocken-bird,
I would love to send you a very good copy of our gggggrandmother! John O'Brien was kind enough to send this framed photograph to me. My name is Kathleen (Kathy)Quinn Strawn. I have descended from Louis' sister, Adeline Joshephine Benoist Riley (hence the Irish mix). She married James Madison Riley and they had William Riley. William & Susan Horine had James Harold Riley who married Hulda Reickert (sp?) and they begat Selma Riley Quinn. Selma was/is my paternal grandmother. I'm Irish but a French enthusiast and a former French teacher. Needless to say, this line made me very excited. I will call you or you may call me. I will send a personal e-mail w/my phone # and therefore you may send me your address!
How are you related?
looking forward to hearing from you, mocken-bird,
Sincerely,
Kathy

Kathy-You and I are related from this line (these are my great-great-great-grandparents on my paternal grandmother's side). Also, I saw that you posted something about Laura Brunson, who was my paternal grandfather's mother. Do you attend the Murrell-Thames reunions in Awendaw every year? It seems that we should know each other, but I am having trouble putting a face with the name. I would love to talk to ou more about whatever information you have, especially on the Brunson side.
