Frederick and Mary Bensinger; Ohio; 1850's

I'm looking for information about my GGgrandparents Frederick and Mary Bensinger. All the information I have is from the 1870 census in Polk county Wisconsin where they seem to have moved shortly before 1860. They were both born in Baden Germany; He abt 1812; she abt 1830. Their first three Children (Barbara (1853), Mary (1855) and Christina (1857) are listed as born in Ohio. Boys Charles (1859), Emil (1861) and Lewis (1863) are listed as born in Wisconsin. I found Mary in a poor house? in Fond du Lac, Wis. in 1900. Lewis is buried in ND where his stone lists him as born 2 July 1854.

My mother is Carol Virginia Bensinger, her father is Carl Clair Bensinger, his Father was Charles J. Bensinger, apparently adopted by William and Sarah. Charles J. Bensingers real parents I guess were Missouri Harris and maybe John Klotz. But that leads us nowhere, but to an unknown clotz, would appreciate any help.

Most of this line of the Bensinger family still lives in Northwest, OH.

I saw another one of our family members had a post on here: she is the daughter of Helen Bensinger and Helen is my grandfather Carls sister.

Hi Jill.

Kevin E.
I was curious if you had found anything about Anna Maria Bensinger since you posted this. I am looking for her family too, and wondered about her DOB. I have several children of Christian Kaup in my records and of the 7 children, 3 were born before 4/1783, so I am assuming that Anna Maria was a 2nd marriage? If this reaches you and you have found anything else out about this Bensinger / Kaup family, please let me know.
thank you,

I am the great grandniece of William Bensinger. As far as I know he has no direct descendants left. This is what I have on his direct descendants.

William Bensinger 1840-1918 m Sarah Carolina Harrris
1842-1929

Son of William --- Charles Henry 'Harry' Bensinger b 1865, Waverly TN, m Mary Barger

Son of Harry --- William Fredrick 'Fred' Bensinger

Daughter of Fred --- Frances Bensinger

Frances did not marry and has passed away.

William and Sarah took into their home my grandfather, Charles, (a different person than their biological son Charles).when his parents died of yellow fever. We believe this to be in 1878 when he was six years old..Sarah was the sister of Charles' mother. They raised him, and he took their last name. So my mother's family became Bensingers.

So all the Bensingers from our family are not blood relatives but we always felt we were part of that heritage. My mother, my children, grandchildren, and I are the only ones from her family left, but her two brothers, who are dead, have quite a few children, grandchildren, etc living.

My mother, Helen Umbs, and Fred Bensinger came to TN, I think, when the 'General' was first reconditioned and put on display. I'm a little spotty on the details as I was away from home by then.

My mother plans to write to you also. Maybe by snail mail or maybe I will type an Email for her. I will forward your Email to my cousins. Perhaps they will be interested or have more info..

If you have questions, I will be glad to try to answer them.
Hi Ed:
Since last posting to your original message I have found out that I am looking for Henry F. Bensinger, born 1873 in Johnstown, PA (according to family bible) and died Nov.6,1946 Evansville,IN. I wonder if the two were cousins? Henry married Elizabeth sometime before 1900, their children were:
Robert b.1900
Mary Katherine b.1902
William b.1904
Geneva b.1906
census records indicate all four children were born in KY.
I have checked different variations of the spelling of Bensinger and still can't come up with anything prior to 1910 for Henry. Any suggestions are welcome.

I'm searching for my ggreat grandfather Henry F Bensinger, he was born 1873 in Johnstown, PA. He married Elizabeth Turner before 1900, possibly KY. They had four children all born in KY. I found him and his family on the 1910 census for Clark County, KY. I would like to find out more about him before this time, who were his parents, etc. Does anyone have Bensinger family in or around Johnstown in the 1870s? I would like to hear from you.

Hi Vivian,

I wish I could say I knew who your Sarah Bensinger was, but I can't. I know Berks County has a lot of Bensingers', but not mine. Have you checked there? I still haven't found one thing on my Bensinger, all I know is his name was Henry Bensinger born 1873, and the family bible says Johnstown, PA. I have a picture of him so I know he existed. The library in Cambria County couldn't find record of any Bensingers' in the area for 1873. If I find anything that I think would be helpful to you I'll post a message back here. I hope you'll do the same for me. Who knows maybe your Sarah and my Henry were brother and sister. Take care and thanks for your response.
Jackie

Hi Vivian,

Just checking back to see if you've found anything on your BENSINGER? I've only been able to find mine on the census record for Mc Cracken County, KY in 1900. Nothing in PA, but listed on the census record is his birth place as PA. I haven't given up yet!

Regards,
Jacqueline

I've noticed no activity to this board and was just curious to know if anyone is still researching their BENSINGER line?

Mine has been a dead end for two years, I'm still looking for information on Henry F BENSINGER. He was born in Johnstown, PA in 1873. He married Elizabeth TURNER before 1900, I found the two of them on the 1900 census for Mc Cracken County, KY. And then I can't find them again until 1910 with all four of their children, still in KY, but another County. I've checked the 1880 census indexes with no luck.

I would really like to find out who his parents were and his siblings.

Moses Bensinger/Polly Horn

First off, my e-mail address is now: tmpuka@pmt.org
The Moses Bensinger everyone has listed as being born on January 19, 1832 in Pennsylvania and married to Polly Horn has the wrong birthyear. These are my gg-grandparents and I have found them in the 1870 census of Harrisville Twp., Medina Co., Ohio. He is listed as being born in 1832. His wife Polly Horn was born in 1833. They were married in 1852 in Medina, Ohio. Since his birthyear is not as everyone has it, now we can't be sure who his parents are. But I sure wish everyone would change his birthyear in their info. Bad info is not good for others to find and use. I also had his birthyear wrong until I decided to check on his birthdate which didn't sound correct to me. Any more info would be appreciated. Thanks to all.

Marriage record for John & Elsie Ann?

Deponents in the CW pension file of John Bensinger give the marriage year for him and Elsie Ann Davidson as 1848, but they seem to be unsure about a lot of the info on Elsie. I think this may actually be their marriage record, but the original may have been smudged, torn or otherwise illegible to the DAR transcriber. A copy of the entry from the Medina Co clerk or probate court would probably straighten that out.
*****

Early Marriage Bonds of Ohio, Medina County.
MOH William Bensinger

William Bensinger (1840-1918), 2nd recipient of the Medal of Honor, was a cousin of Abraham, not his brother; he was the son of Reuben Bensinger (1819-1884) and Hannah Feazel (1819-1903). William, his wife, and parents are all buried at McComb Union Cemetery, Hancock Co, OH.

You can find a biography of William at
http://homepages.rootweb.com/~usbios/Ohio/bios/hancock/bensi...

There is an excellent site about the raid for which William received the MOH, as well as comrade, Jacob Parrott, first recipient of the MOH (all the survivors of the raid appear to have been awarded MOH, same date) at
http://www.andrewsraid.com/bensinge.html

The Army Museum also has a site with MOH bios.

Solomon Bensinger, 1900 census

I had a chance to check the 1900 Illinois soundex for Solomon and did not find him there. Actually didn't find any Bensingers, so maybe they moved. But it would be worth it to request a death record from Calhoun Co, IL for him sometime between 1891 and 1900. The results would be of interest to many Bensinger researchers, I'm sure.
