Hi, This was my great-grandmother. She was not brought to the US by her father. Her father died when she was one year old. Her mother was very poor when she married and after her husband died, being threatened by her wealthy in-laws took Sophie to Indiana first where they stayed for a short time. They then moved to Louisville, KY where her mother worked as a maid and boarded Sophia. Sophie married David Mercer and had 5 children, two girls and then three boys. My grandma was her second daughter, Ella Ruth (who was called Ruth). Was Sophie's father named August? I have never known his name. Sophie and David bought their home in Louisville with inheritance she received when she came of age from her father's estate. I met Sophie but before I was old enough to remember her. I do remember when she died. My grandma's older sister was called Lillian but I don't remember the three younger brothers names (Pete? and David? are two I think are correct).

Attached to a copy of a will in my possession is the will/probate of this person of Surrey, England. It mentions the Stationers Company and the executor, wife Mary Bensley or Bonsley. I will share it with a descendant.

Jacob was my 3rd great grandfather. He was born 27 Sep 1810 and did pass away in 1886. His grave is located in Valley View- Smartwood Cemetery in Lehman Township, Pike County, PA.

I am trying to trace a Johnston family. Widow Martha Johnston married Jacob Bensley between 1875-1880. Jacob Bensley died in 1886. I am wondering if anyone knows more about this. Maybe an obituary on Jacob? Or a will? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently inherited a great number of family photographs most of which I can identify the subjects. The identities of those in two of the photos, however, are beyond me or any members of my immediate family. I am guessing that one photo may be of James Madison Bensley and his wife Mary Jane Garris. The second, I think, may be of their son (a young) Elmer Norman Bensley. So if anyone knows what James Madison Bensley, Mary Jane Garris, and their son Elmer Bensley looked like please let me know.

I have Mary Helen on the 1920 census, living with her mother, Eva Bensley, her grandmother, Eliza (not sure about that...it is kind of faded.) and her brother, Earl Bensley. They are living in Wright County, Missouri in the township of Mountain Grove.
Are we talking about the same Mary Helen?
In my other post I gave her father as William Edgar, not Edward, but he did go by Ed Bensley. I suppose the name could have gotten confused over the years.

Apparently this is just an amazing coincidence with the names being the same etc. My Mary Helen wasn't born until 1921 and her mothers married name was Eva Bensley. They lived in southern MO but I'm not sure where exactly. As far as we know she was an only child to Eva and Ed Bensley. I think they divorced when Mary was young and he moved elsewhere. good luck in finding who you are looking for.

I believe you are mistaken about your Mary Helen not being the same as my Mary Helen. Here's why:
The Bensley name is a fairly rare one. It certainly isn't as common as Smith or Jones anyway. The likelyhood of there being at least 2 Ed Bensley's in that area are slim. Then you figure that not only are there two Ed Bensley's in the area, but they both married a woman named Eva AND both had a daughter named Mary Helen and the 2 Mary Helens are only 3 years apart in age???? What are the odds of that happening? That's got to be a zillion to one odds....
Do you know the name Shay or Shea? My aunts told me that Eva Ewing-Bensley (mother of my Mary Helen) remarried after she and my grandpa split up and she married a man with the last name Shay.

Eva Ewing Bensley was widowed according to 1920 census and living with her father and 2 children Earl and Elaine Bensley in Mountain Grove, Missouri. My mothers name is Mary Helen Bensley born 1921 in Joplin MO. Her parents are Eva R. Shea and Ed (Edgar) Bensley. I'm not sure of their wedding date but know that my grandmother was 22 yrs old when my mother was born. They were living in Anderson, Missouri (McDonald county) I will try to gather the rest of the info. soon. I do have some that my father assembled.

Hi, I'm not really sure how this works. And I don't have much information about my family. I'm 16, and very curious about my relatives and family that I don't know about. My father really has nothing to do with me, so I really don't know any of my family or the history of my family. All the Info I really have is my grandmother, who passed in 2003, Her name was Leah D. Bensley, she was born November 2nd of 1933, she lived in Bushkill, Pennsylvania. If anyone can help me find some of the roots to my family it would be much appreciated :)

I have a little information on John Bensley - born Germany, July 6, 1766. Came to America with older brothers, William & Israel in 1776 at the age of 10. Settled on North River in Delaware. Then after 1 yr moved to Tioga County, PA, purchased land and remained for serveral years. I have he married Mary Wilson and soon after this moved to Hamilton Co., OH then on to Delaware Co. a few years later. He died Aug 10, 1853. Mary passing in 1856. I have 10 children listed. I am decendant from their son John who was born Jan 31, 1807. My grandmother gave me her packet of DAR stuff that her sister had collected many years ago. It is written in story form. I don't mind to share. I would love a copy of anything that you have to fill in my blanks.

james was a marine engineer 1901 age 39,and he was living with, walter smith, emily smith his sister in gorleston great yarmouth norfolk. in 1881 he was on the vessle "promise" 5th hand, age 19. he married ethel in gorleston 1904? james and ethel are my g grandparents. $my nanna first born in 1906in gorleston. they moved to grimsby north east lincolnshire england when my nanna was a very young girl, because of james's work i think. went on to have about 19 children. james died age 76 in 1942 grimsby england. i still need to get proof of their marriage in gorleston. so harriett moved away (wow!) what a journey that must have been in them days, is that why im finding loads of bensleys in amrica.

I just looked Emily married Walter Smith. I have their childrens names.
Also, I have James, Emily and Harriets parents names as:
William Bensley and Harriet Varley.

Just ran across your listing and read all the emails between you and Joan. I too descend from Frederick Bensley through his son William J. Bensley, who's 3rd wife was Cora Viola Austin, who had married first Luther D. Fisk who was a brother to Jessie Fisk. (Their parents were Albert Fisk & Rosanna Salton per marriage records). Cora & Luther Fisk had a son name George. Cora & William Bensley had 2 children, my grandfather Jacob/Jake and his sister Hazel. So far I have found that Cora married 5 times. Have a lot gaps still on them but it's always nice to hear from someone new. Where do you live?
