I'm sorry, these are different people. My Roy Benway married a Virginia, not sure of her last name. The had a daughter Velma. That doen't mean that they are not related though. Roy's parents were Eli W and Mary Jane (Colt) Benway. Eli started in Vermont, Ill, NY Kan, and varoius other places for a time. Ending up in Kansas. I don't know if Eli had siblings, untraceable still.

I will keep you in my Benway group and if I find anything I will let you know. Good to meet you and let's hope we can connect our families.
Candy

I am not sure if you are talking about the same Roy Benway. My granddad's middle name was Onno. He had worked on the railroad and in a bakery in Hillyard (Spokane, WA). My dad was Joe Arnold Benway. Roy's wife was Gertrude Ann at this point I can not think of her maiden. I do know that Granddad had relations in Ozark, MIssouri.

Benway

Im trying to find any information on a John Adrian Benway, married to a Cindy M. Mirackei. My mother (cindy) was in the foster sytem as a child, and its forbiden to ask about family history. But I wanted to know if anyone out there would know about either. John's Mother name(from what little I can learn) was Edna. I dont know if Edna is still alive, or her husbands name. The only information i can gather from whispered stories behind doors, was that Edna and(supposedly) her husband left Northern Europe right before WWII had began. B/C the US had been not accepting any more refugees, she and her husband went to Canada, and snuck through the border to the US from there. And eventually traveled to MA. I'm currently a student in college and going to a Uni. for Criminal Justice in TX and living w/ my sister and her husband. I simply want to know if there was anyone in my family whoever shared the same thirst for CJ as I do.

Hi. What a quick reply. Fran and I live near Whitney, TX, north of Waco.
Fran Nugent Johnson was born and reared near the old Nugent home and returns there often.
From a mention 2 days ago of Indian ancestry Fran said she was part Mohawk and asked if I could find anything about that. For a genealogy nut, that was all it took to trigger my research.
Quickly found the family in 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses and traced her great-uncle Roy to WA and CA. I note the CA death records list his mother's maiden name was White.
In our first conversation since I found the census, I quickly realized Fran is a fountain of infomation.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Were Ida and Roy's parents Eli and Mary Jane?
skddavis1932@valornet.com
Shelba Davis

Hi Shelba:
I think that Fran is a cousin of mine. Does she live in OK? If I am thinking of the right person her mother was Lura Griffen Nugent. I have been unable to find anything on the Benway line but have found a little on the Felton/Glover (Buena Vista Felton Nugent) line. Am at a standstill there too now though. I would love to share what I have with you guys. I only go back to John Alex on the Nugent side and have nothing on the Benway other than Eli and Mary Jane.
I would love to add Fran's family in my file though. I have no info listed under Claud Jr's family.
If you want what I have so far I will send it to you unless you have it already. No sence sending things you have already.
Candy

Edward Benway 1830-1890

I'm looking for a family connection for Edward Benway born in Canada in 1830.. do not know where .. immigrated at some point prior to 1850 in the Whitehall/Kingsbury/Hudson Falls NY area. Married Pruella Archer - had two children Charles and Harriet. Divorced from Pruella - remarried one Sara Wheeler.. between 1870 and 1880 moved to Belivdere, Illinois where he is buried. Died there in 1890. Do not know why he and Sara left upstate NY for Illinois. Also have no information on the wearabouts of daughter Harriet after 1860, when she moved with her mother and stepfather to Ashtabula, Ohio. If anyone can help connect my Edward back to Canada and family there or know of the whereabouts of Harriet Benway from 1860 in Ohio onwards, please contact me. Thanks.

Benway History

Yes the name is usually Benoit but got changed to Benway in the US. Illinois had the largest immigration of the this name in the 1850-70 period after the New England states. Also this family name can be found in Vermont as early as 1828. The Benoits are from about 5 or 6 immigrants who came from France in the 1660's. Its quite a story to discover.

I have no way of knowing, Eli could be a nickname, not his baptisem. ALso I cannot help much if he is outside of Quebec where I reside. His wife's name of Colt would seem to be English speaking hence Protestant. These church records are very uncertain as frequently missing.
Suggest you might want to try posting your request on Genforum in the "Benoit forum"

If this is the correct Benway which I think it is because he is married Matilda LaMott, which is my great, great, great grandfather's sister this is what I have learned. According to the 1880 and 1870 Census, I do believe Charles' father was Christopher and Elisabeth Benway. Christopher was born in Canada and Elizabeth was born in Vermont. In 1880, Charles and Matilda lived with his family in Goodhue County, MN. In 1860, Christopher and Elizabeth lived in Cumberland, Rhode Island. They had four children when the census was given Philomen, Elizabeth, Charles (4) and Eliza. Joseph and Margaret Benway lived with them which I assume is his parents. They were 69 and 65 years old. I was wondering if you could share with me when Charles and Matilda were married and any other info. I do have a picture of Christopher Benway, Charles and Matilda's son. I think it is a form of a death card.

Hi there!
I didn't think I would find this kind of thread! I am researching my mothers' side of the family. They are Benways from Quebec.
My mothers' dad was apparently from Vermont somewhere and moved to Canada ( I don't have any details, hence the search)
and married my Nana, from the Shedrick (or Shadrick) family name, probably in the early 1930's.
The family lived in a little town/village named Clarenceville (I beleive not in existance anymore) near the towns of Lacolle, St.Jean and possibly Noyen Qc.
Could this be of the same group as those discussed in this thread?
I am anxiously awaiting replies.. :) God Bless

The Henry I have found was b. abt. 1877 in New York, found in the census records he did live in McHenry, Ill. with 4 children and wife Ida, b. abt. 1882. From there he was hard to find. I know he did live in Clarkston, Mi area at sometime also.
I have heard rumors that there is Indian in the family but unclear as to what side Benway or the other family I'm reasearching. I have no info other than that.

Not much other info on him a little on his brother Eli and his parents. Was he part Mohawk Indian?
with all the names running in the different families they have to be connected somehow.
Candy

Thank you for your reply. I am not looking to "eliminate" Nina Benway's. I know who my Nina Benway was and who her parents and adopted parents were. What I am looking for is anyone who can shed additional light on Peter & Iwanona Benway, Nina's adoptive parents, and Nina's siblings and why Nina returned to her birth name after having been adopted by the Benways. Also, Peter Benway was from Canada so it is quite possible the original spelling was Benoit.

Thanks,
Rebecca

She married Howard Benway in Talulla, Ill.

This probably doesn't help, but it eliminates one Nina Benway from your search list.
Hi Mere,
Thanks for your response. You are right that the roots for the Benways were in Quebec. Am haveing a difficult time tracking them there even with a reseacher. I do know that Moses Benway and Orilla Babin were listed on their marriage record as being from Noyen, Quebec. That is about as far as I can track them. Thanks again for your input.
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
Well I know that they all are from the Burlington area, most are still in Burlington, but some have moved out a little to neighboring towns. I am pretty sure that they are French Canadian, their relatives originating in Quebec. My father's birth mother is said to be of French descent. I'm not sure if she was the benway or the birth father. Either way, I'm pretty confident that the Benway family has roots in Quebec.
Good luck with everything.

Mere

Still looking for information on Eli. Have found a little more: He was married to Charlotte Monty in 1868 time line having 3 sons Eli James ended up in Iowa, Wallace and Henry C. all in New York, moved to VT where Charlotte died. Eli went into the service at this time. Then married Mary Jane Colt of VT. They had 8 children most born in ILL last two in Kansas where Mary and Eli both died. Children are: Warren O, Ella I, Lillie,Arthur Luther,Johnathan,Alace,Roy W. and Ida Mae. Possibility there is another marriage to a Caroline with children Aurlia,Frank and Mary before Mary Colt.
Anything ring a bell with anyone? As many others state there was Native American in the line. Would have to been Eli's mother. Census shows Mohawk but as a child was told something different just can't remember what it was because it wasn't one of the better know names of tribes known.

Hi,

I'm wondering if your Benway's are related to mine. I see that in the 1860 census index for Grand Isle, the Moses Benway family included a son, Nelson, age 8 months.

My ancestor, Jacob Benway, born c. 1842 in Quebec, was the son of Narcisse Benoit aka Nelson Benway, and Jacob also had a son named Nelson. He settled in Massachusetts in the mid 1860s.

Did you have the 1860 census index?

Moses Benway, age 40
Orrilla Benway, 26
Sarah A Benway, 6
George Benway, 2
Frances Geroe, 79
Nelson Benway, 8.12

That Frances Geroe is probably Moses's mother?

Hope this helps,
Brenda
New Zealand

Peter Benway adopted my grandmother, Loraina Harper, sometime before 1880 and renamed her Nina. She is listed as his daughter on the 1880 Michigan census. I am looking for any information that would lead me to Loraina's birth family. She had siblings Wallace, Eugene, Olive, and Anna. Olive married a Mills and Anna married a Cline. I do not know what became of Wallace or Eugene or their parents. I do not know what became of the Benway's and why Loraina was using Loraina Harper when she married rather than Nina Benway. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Brenda,
There were a lot of Benway/Benoit families in Quebec. It is possible that they were related. I don't know enough about this Benway family history to say for sure. I do know that on some of the church records that I found in Alburg they were listed under Benoit. As to who Frances Geroe was I have no idea. On the 1870 census for Alburg, Vt there is a Jerhu Benway listed age 80, I believe that this is Moses's mother. She also is listed as being from Canada. Could be the same person listed differently. Age would match.
Cheryl
