Hello,

I am descendent of Amedee Berard. My grandmother was Bertha Berard, daughter of Amedee Berard and Leontine. Bertha was married to Vincent Dupuis, then divorced and married August Thibodeaux. There are 4 daughters from these unions. 3 with Vincent( all deceased) and 1 with August (Deceased also). We know nothing of Bertha except she died shortly after childbirth with her 4th child. I have not been able to locate her grave. I believe it may be in Breaux Bridge or Cecilia, La. But ??.
Amedee had 5 children that I know of. I have his birth date as 1850. Children: Bella, Bertha, Ella, Agnes, Londa, Armand Peter ( prob adopted child) and Norbert Latiolais Hired hand. My mother (Anita Dupuis)and her two sisters are also on that census. You may contact me at pyleblanc@cox.net

Thank you so much for this info- huge help!! I would love to get into contact with the researcher. I believe my Beaudry line intertwines with this line, according to the info you sent me. I think that John Berard and John Baptiste Beaudry had the same mother. John Beaudry was a cousin to Francis X Osteyee (second husband to Leonore), and there are two other marriages between Beaudry and Osteyee families.

Thank you!

The 1850 US census shows John and Lenora at Colchester with children, Newell aged 14 born Canada and Ambrose aged 8 born Vermont. Both John and Leonora born Canada. The family is recorded as "Borrow" which isn't unsual.

In 1870 Lenora is listed as "Celinda Berard" and she is living in the household of Damien and Maria Cormier, Maria is aged 17 and born in VT...this looks like the Maria you mention.

The name "Osteyee" is also found as Ostilly, Ostiguy etc..

Janice

I am researching John Berard of Colchester, Vermont. I found a will for John dated in 1869. His wife is Leonore (I don't know her maiden name). According to her will in same town in 1884 she married Francis Osteyee. That is where I come in. Her will says she had a daughter named Maria Barrow who took care of her for 5 years and had 4 more children. I would like to find out any info on this person and family. Anyone have any info? Thanks.

In reply to what Cathy said!

I'm trying to trace my ancestry. Unfortunately, my family is from Montreal and Rhode Island. However, I would like to share a story that was passed to me by my Uncle, Jean Paul Berard. He told me that four Berard brothers came from France. One stayed in Rhode Island, and the other three went onto Canada. I do not know the year. Luckily my Uncle is still alive so maybe I should ask more. There are also rumors that one branch of the family sold slaves. Do any of this sound familiar?
Cathy Berard Lambert

Cathy
Here’s addition to your story.
I would like to share my story that was passed down to me: There were seven Berard brothers that came from Grenoble, France.
Mariette (Antoine),
While your reply to my inquiry mentioned Bill, I am responding, though I am probably not the person you were trying to contact.

I was trying to contact individuals who have information on the family of Lucien and Adeline (Barette) Berard of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin (the Berards of Northern Wisconsin). Lucien and and Adeline were from St. Barthelemy, Bertier County, Quebec and were born about 1820. They had 10 children, 7 sons and 3 daughters that grew up in Wisconsin. Information provided by researchers at the Launaudiere GenWeb indicated ancestors of Gabriel Berard-dit-Lepine born 1681 and a Gabriel Berard-de-Lespine born 1644.

I have extensive information regarding my Wisconsin ancestors, and would like to find someone who could help identify individuals in family photos dating from the early 1900s.
Thank you,
David Berard

Jean Bptiste Berard of St. Martinville, Louisiana

Jean Baptiste Berard, who came to the Attakapas area or St. Martinville area circa 1760 and built a home in the town of St. Martinville, presently known as the Castillo Hotel, and Jean Baptiste Berard was married to Ann Broussard, who was a Acadian ancestry and they were the parents of several children, one of whom, Christine Berard was the wife of Agricole Fuselier de la Clair and a son, Achille Berard, was the husband of Hortense Boutte, and Jean Baptiste Berard owned a large plantation, which comprises a portion of the present day town of St. Martinville, where the St. Martin Parish Courthouse is presently located and the Southern end of the town of St. Martinville, the part of the town that you past as you enter the town of St. Martinville from New Iberia. In the early 1770's when violence was begin waged between the CAttle barons of the Attakapas area, who let their large herds of cattle roam around the praries of Attakapas unattended and many cattle became wild due to this practice. Following the exile and resettlement of the Acadians in the Attakapas area, many of the Cattle barons absorbed many of the herds of cattle that were domesticated and belonged to the newly arrived Acadians. Of course, there was a public outcry which led to the then Louisiana Governor Alexanderjo O'Reily requiring the construction of fences, the restriction of movement of the herds of cattle, and the periodic slaughtering of wild cattle. The wealthy Flammand brothers, who also had the surname of Grevemberg, and were owners of many of the wild cattle roaming the praries of Attakapas, convinced the postponement of slaughering of the stray cattle, this was the root cause where the Acaidans were led by Jean Baptiste Berard and Claude Boutt, who was also a Frenchman, to slaughter a significant number of the wild livestock and as a result of this action, the Flammand brothers whose surname was Grevemberg demanded that the Commandment Alexander DeClouet of the Post of Attakapas place the ringleaders in jal. This action led Jean Baptiste Berard to be interrogated in the death of Jospeh Broussard on August 19, 1774

Prior to coming to St. Martinville, Louisiana or the ATtakapas area, Jean Baptiste Berard was a merchant in St. Louis.
It is very possible that Jean Baptiste Berard, who was a native of the Dauphine area of France and came to Louisiana was a relative or a close friend of Edouard Andre Masse' who was also a native of the Dauphine area and it is rumored that Masse' gave Jean Baptiste Berard his plantation lands in St. Martinville from lands that Edouard Andre Masse' had received in a French land grant.

I have a tombstone transcription from Rhode Island that that shows:
ST JAMES CEMETERY, LINCOLN, OLD RIVER ROAD
BERARD, FRANCOIS 1881-1926
BERARD, LOUISA (CHOQUETTE) 1883- 25 MAR 1964

The birth date seems off but some of the other information matches. I suspect I'll need to check the death certificate next. thank you.
I looked for the daughter you mentioned and didn't find any mention in the B M S 2 0 0 0.

I did find a son, Joseph Philippe Arthur, born 18 Mar, 1921 and baptised the next day at Notre-Dame-de-la-Présentation, Shawinigan-Sud, St-Maurice County, Québec.

Parents shown as Joseph Bérard and Parmélia Coutu. Godparents were Arthur Laplante and Marie-Jeanne Harnois.

Unfortunately Philippe Arthur died Aug 1, 1921 and was buried the following day.

The fact that I didn't find a daughter doesn't mean there wasn't one, just that she doesn't seem to have been born/bapt in one of the parishes which submitted data for the B M S 2 0 0 0.

Which parishes do you know about that this daughter might have been born in?

Hello cousins,

I am not aware of any documentation that links the Berards of Carcassonne to the line of Gabriel Berard of Chateau du Loir. It would be nice to have some information on this.

The Berard Tower, built in the 13th century, is, however, a great "Berard" landmark and it is surely possible that the Carcassonne Berards were ancestrally related to Gabriel Berard dit Lepine.

All the best!
Joe

Re: Gabriel BERARD, Chateau-du-Loire (France)

Hello cousins,

Comments that come to mind...

Gabriel's birthplace: Chateau du Loir, about 150 miles SW of Paris.

Parents names: Isabelle Guillermain and Pierre Berard dit Varanne.

Baptized: St Martin Church, destroyed in the 1789 French Revolution.

Another church nearby, St. Guingalois, VERY historic and ancient, remains intact, and was surely attended by the Berard family. A statue on display there, Charity of St. Martin, was salvaged from St. Martin Church.

If you can read and speak French, there is a historical society in Chateau du Loir that could be contacted for help in finding Gabriel landmarks or "cousins". Also, the town library would be a good place to look for information.

My son and I visited there in 2000 and had a wonderful time.
Best place by far to stay is Manoir du Riablay, a 10 minute walk from town center. It's 14th century, well maintained and has 6 elegant B&B suites. Owner speaks fairly good English. Google its name for info.

All the best,
Joe
I believe the 5-frame Berard exhibit is permanent. They noted that it draws a lot of interest. Maybe best to write or phone them to be sure before making plans to visit.

Their contact information:

Friends of Beaubears Island, Inc.
PO Box 16
Station Nelson
Miramichi, New Brunswick, E1N 4P6

Tel: 506-624-1359
Email: center@beaubearsisland.ca

All the best!
Joe
