My husband and I will be traveling to Konigheim, Germany and hope to research my family's history. Is there anyone who has already been there who can give us some help? Do you have any connections with people in Konigheim? Or ideas about burial sites, etc.?
We are following the Paul A. to Oscar to Alexander (emigrated in 1852 along with brother Josef Anton and followed in 1861 by brother Reinhold and sister Scholastika) to Johann J. to Franz to Anton line.

Philipp Berberich, from Mudau, Baden, Germany

Philipp Berberich was 34 years old when he migrated to Brazil with his wife Catharina (25) and their two sons, Ludwig (5) and Eugen (1 1/4). Their ship, the "Osnabrück", left Hamburg in June 4th 1858 under Capitain G. Langes' command. The Berberichs were one of the 224 German families who arrived in Rio de Janeiro aboard that ship. Their final destination was the City of Juiz de Fora, in the State of Minas Gerais. In the passengers list he is qualified as "Arbeiter" (worker). He left innumerous descendants in that State.

(Source: Hamburger Schiffs- und Passagierlisten 1850-1934)

If you understand Portuguese you can learn more about the German migration to Juiz de Fora here: http://espeschit.com.br/historia/juiz_de_fora/

Re: My Berberich Family in Chicago

I am a niece of Clare and Joe Kurzweil. My father was Joe's younger brother. I can tell you about their three children. Joseph died as a baby, about 1 1/2 yrs old. Pete lives with his wife, Edie, in Boston. They have no children. Diane has never married and still lives in the Chicago area. She also has no children. Aunt Clare and Uncle Joe retired to Sun City Arizona where they still are today. Clare's sister, Elizabeth, also never married and lived with her mother until "Grandma B"'s death. I think Elizabeth "Bootsie" just died a few years ago, but I could not swear to it. I know that Aunt Clare had begun putting together a family tree years ago, but I don't know if she ever finished it.

My name is Ginny Gardner (Kurzweil).
Re: Berberich/Peter

Hello Kathy,

I am helping my mother-in-law with her genealogy. Her grandmother's aunt, Sarah CUMMINGS married Michael/Mechail BERBERICH from Martinshake, Bavaria, Germany. Michael was b. 22 Sep 1834 and died 16 Jul 1897 in Waterloo, Iowa. Following is his obit. I am hoping someone can help me fill out this family line. Are you related to this Michael BERBERICH?

OBIT: Bulletin Journal, Independence, Iowa, 27 July 1897

M. Berberich

M. Berberich, one of the early pioneer residents of Independence, died at three o'clock Friday afternoon, July 16, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. G. Mann, in Waterloo, of dropsy of the heart. Mr. Berberich was in his sixty-third year. His death was rather sudden and a surprise to his Independence friends, as it was but a few weeks ago that he was in this city renewing old acquaintances. Mr. Berberich came here in the early fifties (1850's) before the log cabin had disappeared as a place of habitation. By his death passes away one more of the few who were here when what is now the most beautiful residence part of the city was a hazel brush patch. That part of our city lying north of Third street was a wilderness, and south of the Methodist church, then a very small frame building, was an unbroken patch of brush. The railroad had not come in competition with the stage coach, and wide gaps of daylight might be seen between the low wooden business houses on Main street. For a number of years after coming here he engaged in the business of tailoring, and for years conducted a hotel. Few traveling men who have made Independence furing the past decade, but will remember his cheery "good morning," and the never-forgotten "did you sleep well?" that greeted their appearance after a night's rest under his roof. He was born in Martinshake, Babaria, September 22, 1834. In 1853 he came to America, and two years later, in 1855, came to Independence, where the greater part of his life has been spent. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. A. G. Mann, of Waterloo, and Mrs. C. H. Ade, of Chicago, and one son, John Berberich, of Waterloo. The funeral services were held in Waterloo Saturday afternoon and the the remains brought here for burial beside those of his wife in Oakwood cemetery. Services were held here at the grave Sunday morning at 9 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. J. Scovell, rector of St. James church. The pall-bearers were J. L. Winnegar, John Gorman, Fred Slotterbec, P. A. Sutkamp, A. F. Williams and Frank Brewer.

Sincerely,

Teresa Davis

tadbit@houston.rr.com
Joh. Andreas Berberich

I have just learned that my gg-grandmother Maria Barbara Greulich was born in Kulsheim, Germany on Dec 4, 1802. Since my last posting on the Berberich Message Board, I have also learned that her first husband was Andreas Berberich. There is a listing for a Joh. Andreas Berberich born in Königheim, Germany on Oct 7 1798. This town is nearby Kulsheim. Does anyone have a marriage record for these two people? The records in Kulsheim do not list such a record but Maria Barbara Greulich's younger siblings are also not listed there so the family must have moved elsewhere. Maria Barbara Greulich Berberich had a daughter Frances about 1829...and also a daughter Caroline who might have been born in 1831. Joh Andreas Berberich DOB 1798 was the son of Andreas Berberich and Maria Eva Eck
Thank you, Deanna

I am tucking this message into my bulging file so someday, sometime, someone can put it all together.
Await the newest Bereberich DNA to emerge into the world in San Francisco.
Hello again. I have since learned that the name of Maria Barbara Greulich's husband is Andreas Berberich. I have also learned that she emigrated into the port of Baltimore in the third quarter of 1832. Her husband was not listed with her on the ship. She was traveling with her two daughters....Frances and Caroline. Her parents: Franz and Maria Greulich and their other children were traveling on the same ship.
My new email is deanna@turton-ent.com
Thank you.

Hello. I saw your remarks on the Berberich name message board and wondered if you might have in your data base, the name of Barbara Greulich Berberich Asfeld. Barbara was from Baden and was born around 1808-1810. She came to America in/around 1833 because her second daughter Caroline Berberich was born at sea...and subtracting from the age of the daughter at the time of her death, I estimate, tha she was born in 1833. However, the oldest daughter was named Frances Berberich and she was born in Baden. Both of these sisters were married in 1852 in Butler Penn....but on the 1850 census, they were still living at home with their parents - Peter and Barbara Asfeld....spelled Orshbett on the census. By 1850, Peter and Barbara also had three younger children...Peter, Susan, and Mary. Mary was my great-grandmother. Later the Asfeld family moved to Carver Co. Minnesota.
Since you seen to have some given names in common, I was wondering if any of this made any sense to you. I do not know the given name of Mr. Berberich = father of Frances and Caroline. Thanks,
Deanna

Hi again, I have just learned from the death certificate for Carolina Berberich Bleichner who was born at sea in 1832 that her father's name was Andreas Barbary...a spelling variant of Berberich. She was not born in 1833 according to her death certificate. She mother was Barbara Greulich/Grauly/even Criley. Barbara is listed as the daughter of Francis Criley on the History of Butler Co 1883. and at that time Barbara is listed as living in Minnesota which is correct according to the Minn census. Caroline also lived there then.

Berberich name is in Hoepfingen Baden back to 1600's.

Hi, There are so many Berberich's in Hoepfingen, Baden Germany, that anyone researching the name should look into that town and area. There are so many people with the surname going back to the 1600's. In the 1600 and 1700's people seldom went far from their home towns, so I would think that their town or origin could be near there. Just wanted to mention this for anyone researching Berberich.
