Dear Kathy, my name is Karen. My mother after being adopted in 1932 by Herbert Paul Bercaw and wife ( my "grandmother" Theadora Deana Hudinko Hunter is Maxine Joan Bercaw. We learned through attorney papers that she was adopted after the death of my grandparents. Very little info on her birth has been found with the exception we learned her real name to be "Joan Evelyn". My aunt Maxine was Herbert Pauls youngest sister. I remember our time shared from childhood to young adulthood. She was truly A wonderful woman. My Aunt Bessie was also A sibling to bo Maxine and Herbert. I remember her just not as well. My mother is now 78 yrs. old. Her closure we hope will come very soon. The adoption was kept secret. My grandparents or my Aunts ever spoke of it. What I would give to find HER biological family. Please any info is appriciated and I have information I would like to share regarding the Bercaw family that im sure will intrest you as well. Sincerely, Karen Long

My mother (adopted name) Maxine Joan Bercaw is desperately seeking information about her birth mother. We believe her name at birth was Joan Evelyn "Phillips". She was adopted by Herbert and Theadora Dena Bercaw back in as far as we know in January 1932. Any info regarding this history will be very helpful. These archives are filled with family as I know it to be. Every name is familiar.

Sincerely,
Karen Long Daughter of Maxine Joan Bercaw.
I know very little of my heritage. My mother is Francis Bercaw, born of Faye and Howard Bercaw. They lived in Lansing Michigan. Faye was an accomplished musician, teaching strings, Howard worked at the Durant Auto plant through the depression. Anyone heard of these folks?

Jay,

That family can be traced in Easton, Northampton, PA census records back a couple of generations. I'm looking in the Burcaw side of the family, who were also "around" the same area, but can't connect them together. The Easton library also has an impressive collection of church records, with indexes online that can be ordered by mail. No sign of Charles (one mention) and Eliza (none, and none of the girls' names in the index), but Abraham and Catherine are heavy in there.

Tracey

Bercaw/Martin - Cincinnati

I believe that my great, great aunt, Ida Bercaw married Solomon Martin, one of the members of the family-owned, historical Chester Park. This was a huge amusement park popular from 1895 until about 1930. This family also owned or operated the Orphian Theater in Cincinnati. Can anyone tell me more about the Martin family, Chester Park, The Orphian(sp?)Theater, or where Solomon & Ida may be buried?

I have notes on your g.g.grandmother Nellie R.(b.1877) You may have some of this info already. She was the Daughter of Oliver Bercaw (b. 1851/52) & Josephine Cann (1st wife, b. 1854) and living in Lewis Co. Kentucky per the 1880 census. Oliver & my g.g.grandmother, Lillie (b.1871) were siblings growing up in Ripley, Ohio. Oliver apparently followed the career of his father (James & Rachel) as a cooper in the city of Vanceberg, KY. James & Rachel owned a barrel making business along Red Oak Creek in the town of Ripley. Jame's brothers also lived in the town of Ripley. Some of the Kentucky Bercaws can be found under the spelling Burcaw (1880 census). If there are any other details you would like let me know. I would like to know more about the group that moved to KY.

Do you have any dates and place names to go with any of the Bercaw names? There are numerous Bercaw's in New Jersey, and I have a couple of George's, William's and Harry's from just he Easton Phillipsburg area. I have not looked into it too much, but I think that Somerset Co. has a group of Bercaws (Brokaws) that settled there.

When I began searching for the Bercaw surname a couple of years ago I came across an article on the web mentioning a French Huguenot, Bourgon Brouccard, who came to New York in about 1675. In about 1702, all of the family, except one son, Isaac, moved to Somerset County, NJ. The New Jersey branch spelled the name as "Brokaw" and since then other have converted to other ways of spelling, as Bercaw; Brocaw; Berkaw; etc., more than twenty different ways of spelling were found in old records of New Jersey.
A third colony was developed in Eastern Ohio, where George Brokaw of the fourth generation settled near Flushing, in about 1798. He had eight sons and each son reared a family.
Hope this helps. There are many Bercaws in NJ and PA, so far I have been able to trace back to a William Bercaw b abt 1831 who married a Mary Stout. Also found the name spelled Burcaw in one census. Also Bercaugh in a NJ census of Warren County, NJ.

Charles Wipple is a witness at George's marriage to Elizabeth Yaeger. Phillipsburg is right across the river from Easton. I was told at the Easton Public Library that people used to walk across the bridge to Phillipsburg and get married.
Re: Wendell Clare Bercaw

Wendell Clare (Claire) Bercaw was my great uncle, brother to my grandfather. We have been looking for his children Betty Joan and Boots (Charles) for a while without success. My mother, aunt and uncle (their first cousins) very much want to meet them as the last time they saw them was in 1940. Any information would be very welcome!

My uncle found a Bercaw book listed in the National Archives which is out of print. He is looking for one. Can get more info if still interested. Perhaps we can hunt together.

William Bercaw

Dear David,

I have a client whom I believe may be associated with your family tree, just exactly where, we are not sure. Her father was “William Reese Bercaw, Jr.” and his father was “William Reese Bercaw, Sr.” In turn, William Sr.’s father was Jeremiah Bercaw. According to my client, she was named “Jeralyn” as a namesake for her great-grandfather – Jeremiah.

In order to provide some clarity as to which branch she belongs, William Reese Bercaw, Sr. was born approximately 1891 and was married to Myrtle Mae Van Horne. He died in Springfield, Ohio.

I noted in your message posted on April 26, 2000, at the Bercaw message board, that you share this lineage but it is not clear to me where you connect into it. I believe that your research will be of interest to my client, so I am forwarding her e-mail address to you. (DITMYWY@worldnet.att.net)

Secondly, I surmise from your posting that you are referring to a book. Can you tell me any details about this book? My e-mail is InamMec@aol.com.

Thanks,
Lorraine Escobar, CAILS
