Hello Marguerite, My father was William Joseph Beresford Jr. and his Mother was Margaret Brennan not Duggan. They immigrated from Ireland in the late 1800's. My father had one full sister (Catherine) and several half siblings from his father's first marriage. I do remember hearing my Mother talk about keeping in touch with Marguerite who would have been my father's half-sister.

I would love to hear from anyone related to this line of Beresfords. Please feel free to e-mail me at toni@tonitrombley.com.
Toni Beresford Trombley
Nee: Mona (Toni) Kathryn Beresford

Thanks for the photo.I was very interested to see Martha's daughter.
Unfortunately I don't have any photos of Martha Cockman/Beresford/Henwood/Pays but I do have one of her older sister, Fanny Cockman, and there seems to be a likeness to your Frances Elizabeth.
Do you have an email address where I can more easily forward info than on here? You probably have to disguise it in your message or Ancestry might delete it. I am bjornem followed by at hotmail dot com. Failing that I'll revert to this message box system.
Thanks, Marion

Thanks, It would be great if you could send me Frances E Beresfords'Birth Certificate and other info about Cockmans and Beresfords. I'm now convinced that Martha Cockman's daughter Frances(Fanny) Elizabeth is my Grandmother. I have a Photograph of her I'll send you. One more thing Martha married a Beresford in 1869, Henwood in 1886 and Pays in 1894 which one are you related to?(if you don't mind me asking)
Sheridon

Thanks for yuour reply.
I agree with all the info that you have given.I too have found no futher trace of Henry Law Beresford. I wonder whether he is recorded as "father deceased" on Martha H's or Fanny's marriage certs.
Martha nee Cockman was my great grandmother, she married twice more in London in 1886 and 1894 but there are some discrepancies on the certs.so she might have been covering up her original marriage to Henry Law Beresford. Martha had 3 further children.
I'm sure now that the Fanny/Frances Elizabeth we are talking about is Martha and Henry's daughter. The 1901 & 1911 census record her birthplace as Stratford nr London/Finney Stratford. Fanny was born in Fenny Stratford Bucks but the family was always on the move so she probably didn't remember the correct place name.
I have Fanny's birth cert - would you like me to email you a copy?
I also have info re the Cockmans, back to 1841, and the Beresfords ..but not what happened to Henry Law or why the family were in Stoke on Trent.
Regards, Marion

Thanks Marion, this is what I know about the family of Henry Law Beresford. Henry L born 1847 Huntingdon married Martha Cockman (b.1852 Bedford) in 1869. Their children were William Henry b.1870-Bedford, Martha Harriet b.1873-Bedford,
Fanny Elizabeth b. 1875-Buckinghamshire, Sarah Ann b.1878-Saffron Waldon and Louisa Elizabeth b.1880-Bury St Edmunds.
Last time they were together was 1881, then as you say the family suffers a disaster and family splits and moves.
William H turns up in London, married, the other siblings all turn up in Stoke on Trent. 1891 Census has Martha Harriet as adopted daughter of William & Caroline Pugh and Frances (spelt Francis) is servant to John and Lucy Jackson.
In 1895 Martha Harriet marries Joseph Wild in Longton. Fanny (Frances) may be my Grandmother marrying Edward Lamb in 1896. As you say Sarah and Louisa were sent to Canada arriving in 1890. I cannot find death of Henry Law nor remarriage of Martha Cockman. Have you any information about her?
Best regards - Sheridon

Am also trying to trace some Beresfords - last found on 1881census. I have birth cert for Frances(Fanny) Elizabeth Beresford, born 1875, Bucks. She was a daughter of Henry Law Beresford and sister of Martha Harriet.
I think something untoward happened to the family after 1881 and two of the younger sisters were sent by Stoke on Trent Board of Guardians to Canada. The mother, Martha (Cockman) Beresford, my great grandmother, remarried in 1886 but I have no trace of Henry's death.

Regards, Marion. bjornem@hotmail.com

Discovered Martha Harriet Beresford whilst looking for my Grandmother Frances Elizabeth Berrisford B.1875 - married Edward Lamb in 1896 at Edensor St Pauls Longton North Staffs. Martha and Frances may be sisters but still trying to prove it. As you say, researching the Berrisfords is complcated by different spellings However,Martha Harriet Beresford B 1873 in Bedfordshire - Father Henry Law Beresford B 1847 Huntingdon-Mother Martha Cockman who married in 1869 had 5 children. Family last found together in 1881 census surname Bereford with some children misnamed.
Martha Harriet BERRISFORD then found in 1891 census as adopted daughter of William and Caroline Pugh living in Longton, North Staffs. She married Joseph Wild 1895.
Unfortunately Ireland doesn’t have an equivalent to Scotlandspeople.

All the censuses prior to 1901 have been destroyed, save for a few fragments. 1901 & 1911 censuses are available free on:

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/?then

Statutory recording of births and marriages only started in 1864. Protestant and nonconformist marriages were recorded from 1845, RC marriages from 1864. You can search for them on:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#...

If you find a likely event, you need to send off for the certificate. Alternatively some pay to view sites will give you a summary of the information.

Some parish records are on line on some pay to view sites but many are not. It’s not like Scpotlandspeople where all Church of Scotland records are on the one site. You have to search the records of the individual church your ancestor attended. You need to know their exact religion and parish. If you know that, copies of many records are kept in PRONI, Belfast. They are on microfilm. You can order them in to your nearest LDS library. (But you need to know which church). With a name like Gemmell it's likely to be Presbyterian, but then you need to know where they came from.

www.proni.gov.uk/index/research_and_records_held/catalogues_...

It might be worth checking out any military records to see if they give a more precise place of birth, to narrow your search.
Hi I hope someone can help!! I have John Beresford who is recorded on 1871 census as a widower, with Children, incl my great grandad Samuel Beresford also born in Ireland. I can't trace his wife Helen Jane Gemmell in deaths in Scotland at all, and think she may have even died in Ireland before they came to Scotland. Is there a version of Scotland's People? I discovered on his death cert that his father was a soldier, and mother was Dorothea Beck. I don't know how to go on. I think it may have been Co Down, but that's an assumption from FS. Helen Jane Gemmell was dead by son Samuel's marriage in 1881

I am looking for any help or advice in researching this lady who married my mother's uncle Gilbert Cornelius Grenon Muller on 1 July 1913 in St. George's Church, Penang. It is believed that she was born in County Mayo, Ireland, but I have been unable to trace any records. She appears to have died on board ship sailing from England to Singapore in 1927, possibly as a result of suicide.

She had two daughters, both born in Penang, but neither ever had any contact with the family of their mother. They only had contact with the family of their father. She also had a son Anthony Grenon de la Poer Beresford Muller who was also born in Penang and died in England at the age of 3, in 1919.

Re: Patrick Beresford, born Deelish 1749

I am trying to trace the various Beresford families that live in Co. Waterford. I am a descendent of Thomas Beresford (b 1794, d 1865) of Annstown Co. Waterford.

I am also aware of the Deelish family which includes the Coolnagour and Castlequarter family lines. My understanding of that line is that Patrick Beresford (b 1749) had a son Nicholas (b 1767, d 1815) who married Ellen O’Connor (b 1763, d 1854), who in turn had a son Philip. Philip had at least three sons, James, Nicholas (married Johanne Kirwan) and Philip who gave rise to the Deelish, Coolnagoure and Castlequarter families respectively. He also had two daughters, Ellen (b1834, d 1850) and Alice (b 1837, d 1900) who married Pierce Kirwin.

Does anyone have further information on these families? I am particularly interested in determining if there is a link between the Deelish group of families and that of the Annstown family.
Hi cmurphy1021,

Yes that is my grandmother Nellie. She had a brother Arthur and 3 sisters. Catherine, Theresa and Mary. I didn't know who my great grandparents were. I was only 9 when she passed away. She had 2 sons Jack and Tom Hennebury. I believe Tom stayed in NL or was in Halifax. I will ask my mother for more information. Thanks for that info, do you have anymore? Are we related? I have 2 cousins on that side who are nieces of 2 of them and children of the sisters

I'm searching for a Robert Beresford who married Hannah Watson .They had a daughter, Sarah Watson which gives Robert Beresford as her father on her Marriage certificate. I beleive they also had two further children, Samual and Hannah Beresford. Robert's wife Hannah died in 1874.

Beresford Y-DNA Group

Hi

As there didn't seem to be a Beresford Y-DNA Group set up anywhere I have set one up on Ancestry.com the address is http://groups.ancestry.com/site/57861626/

As only males carry Y-DNA this is a male only project, but that doesn't mean that you ladies cannot take part. You can do so provided that you can find a close Beresford male to take a DNA test for you, i.e. Brother, Father, Uncle or Cousin.

This is only for those who carry the Beresford surname or those who suspect that they are actually Beresford's (like myself.)

Regards,

Nick Blackhurst (nicolasblackhurst@toucansurf.com)
