The 1865 census gave at least approximate birth years for the parents of Annette.

If 'Hans Lie' was 72 yrs old in the 1865 we'd expect that he was born ABOUT 1793 and the census says that happened in Hønefoss.

So church records for Norderhov can be checked online (or using LDS microfilm copies -- your choice).

On 9 Oct 1808 a confirmation class is recorded which includes Hans Andreasen Lie (14 yrs old). Confirmation records here for this time period didn't include any notation of parent(s). names.
1801 Norwegian census lists farms by the names of Lia, Lie and Loe. But I don't see any young Hans recorded on that census that appears to be a match...

So a birth/baptismal record about 1792-1794 would be next to search for. Norderhov records before sometime in 1793 were not separated by type of event but instead were recorded as they occurred, chronological listing. Those too are available for online research (or LDS microfilm).

Starting to scan through church records of 1792 and notice handwriting is 'challenging' but that the writer had a helpful habit. He tended to underline the given names of babies baptised. That will probably help the search. He made note of engagements and marriages in a left hand column on each page so those can be skipped. The records change writers and styles several times but...
A possible match was baptised on the 7th Dec 1794 --
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8526&i...

It should be far easier for you to find a birth/baptismal record for Annette's mother since her name is far less common.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

Bygdebok -- "Hønefoss", 3 volumes by Andreas Ropeid.
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/bygdebok.html
A scanned copy of Annette's original birth/baptismal record from the church books of Norderhov, Buskerud.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1111&i...
(Hønefoss was still included in the Norderhov district at this time.)
Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

"Lie" as listed after her father's name probably indicates his ADDRESS, or the name of the farm where he was living or where he had family history. Others also identified with "Lie" are not necessarily relatives - but they also have residence or family history with a farm of that name.

Annette's parents appear in the 1865 Norwegian census living in Hønefoss, apparently no longer on a farm.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na0.html

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na12.html
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm
http://www.norwayheritage.com/norwegian-names.htm
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/farms.htm

Good lists of translated words -
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na17.html
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

Farms "Lie" or "Lia" or "Lien" and other spelling variations are very common and can be found all over Norway.

Update --- Re: Norwegian Bergs from Bloomer, Wisconsin

Have found information taking me further back.

Nicolai's parents were Martin Christoffer Larsen Berg and Marte Marie Lie. Nicolai was born: Nicolai Olavus Martinsen Berg, July 4, 1835 in Søndre Land, Oppland, Norway.

Nicolai married Annetta in Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, November 17, 1872.

Annetta's parents were Hans Andreas Lie and Karen Dorthea. Annetta was born: Annetta Marie Hansdtr Lie, January 15, 1846 in Honefoss, Buskerud, Norway. She emigrated to the USA in 1868.

Their is yet to be some cross referencing for verification, but so far a lot of this new information seems correct. There might be some greyness to sort out with regard to "Lie" on both sides. However, the children for Nicolai and Annetta are listed very differently in Norwegian archives than in North American archives. So, I have some work to do, with cross referencing, using personal letters between Nicolai and his son Martin. Unfortunately, they are in Norwegian and I am just beginning to learn the language.

Their children in the order that I believe:

Pike -- born circa 1872
Martin Andrew -- born September 6, 1873
Martha -- born circa 1874
Christoffer -- born circa 1876
George -- born circa 1877
Olaf P -- born 1879
Gunda -- born circa 1881
Dena -- born circa 1882

More details to come!

Denis

Hi Dennis,

I am also related to your Berg's. Nicolai is buried outside of Bloomer, Chippewa County, WI in the Scandinavian cemetery with his brothers Otto Berg (my relative) and Lauritz Berg. The correct spelling of Lee is Lie. I can point you towards a Genealogy that shows our line in Norway.

Please contact me direct for more information VMCMJ@aol.com

Hope you have a nice trip to Norway.

Veronique McMillan

My Great Grandfather Martin Andrew Berg married Olga Javgine Grondahl. The marriage was preceded by the "Confirmation" of Olga in a Presbyterian church. The Confirmation record lists Bethlehem. However, it is all in Norwegian and I don't understand the language well enough to know if this is of any significance to you or not.
Hello,

I am from Alberta, Canada. My Great Great Grandfather was Nicholai O. Berg who entered USA 1865. He met Annetta Lee (immigrated 1868) and they were married circa 1872. They lived in Bloomer, Wisconsin.

I am looking for more information about them. Particularly, anything which can trace them back to Norway. I am visiting Norway in November 2009.

Wisconsin Scandinavian Obituaries
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wisobits/i...

"MRS. JOHN P. AASEN (SOGN)
"Mary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Berg, was born February 11, 1858, in Sogn, Norway. In 186, she came with her parents to Crawford county, Wisconsin. After a brief stay there, they came to Norden in Trempealeau County, where they settled on what is now known as the Bert Berg farm.
On October 11, 1883, May Berg was married to John P. Aasen of Norden. The newly married couple settled on what is now known as the Big Grorud farm, where they lived for five years. They then bought the farm in Norden which was their home for thirty years.
In 1920, having sold their farm, Mr. and Mrs. Aasen made their home in Whitehall, Wisconsin, where they have made their home since.
Mrs. Aasen has been in poor health for nine years and for the past two years has been seriously ill. She suffered much pain, but throughout the whole of her illness bore her sufferings with patience and fortitude. On Sunday, May 28, death came as a merciful release.
Life has a friend called Death
Who strips him of his clay
That so, freed from the breath,
A soul may reach its day.
A faithful wife, a good mother, a kind friend, devout member of her church. Death had no errors for Mrs. Aasen. It was a portal to the end, and where she could be forever with the Lord. Mrs. Aasen is survived by her husband and four children: Sena, Mrs. Henry Hugdall of Eau Claire; Peter of Osseo; Julius of Rochester, Minn., and Caroline, Mrs Paul Dollum of Albert Lea, Minn.
All of these were present at the funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon, May 30. Services were held at 1 p.m. at the home and at 2 p.m. at the Norden church. Rev. J.A. Westberg and Rev. H.C. Wik gave addresses in Norwegian and Mr. Ole Wik in English. The choir sang fitting selections. The large attendance--the funeral was one of the largest ever held at Norden--and the abundance of flowers attest the affection and regard in which Mrs. Aasen was held in the community, where she had for so long made her home.
Interment was made in the Norden cemetery. The following six nephews of Mrs. Aasen were the pall bearers: Martin Ausen, Sam Ausen, Albert Ausen, J.B. Berg, Joseph Berg and Helmer ...orud."
See my July 22 posting below to KBoylan. Appears my husband and you are also Finnish. We've found John Olsen Berg's father, mother and grandfather.

Just found out there is a Finnish Church in Grue. You might want to do a google search on Grue, Finnklogen, and Risberget. Some neat information.

Virginia Berg

I cannot access the web site. Besides it in Norwegian and I'm not sure what link to click.

However, I did access the 1865 Norwegian census at the Norwegian Historical Data Center (www.rhd.uit.no/indexing) and found the names of John Olsen's father (Ole Johannes), mother (Kristin Johannesdatter), and grandfather (Johannes Hansen, born in 1792). Under the latter's listing the ethnicity column has "kvaen" and "norsk." Norsk is easy, but I discovered that kvaen means Finnish and that part of Norway where Grue is located is called Finnland (about 30 miles long and 5 to 10 miles wide along the Swedish border). Finns, who were first asked to settle in Sweden in 1600s, were forced out of Sweden so they just crossed the border into Norway. My guess is that Johannes' mother was Finnish as Johannes Hansen is definitely Norwegian.

Also their farm is named "Risberget." There are pictures of the area on line.

Since there were so many Norwegians with the same name, they identified themselves with the names of their farms. So John Olsen was called John Olsen Risberget. My guess (and it's only a guess) that when he came to this country he used the name John O. Berg (shortening Risberget to Berg). The name that all John's brothers used in the US was Berg.
___________________________________________________________
Census year: 1865
Municipality: Grue
Municipality number: 0423
Name of domicile: Risberget
Number of persons in this domicile: 9

Name, Family status, Marital status, Occupation, Birth year, Place of birth, Ethnicity

Ole Johannessen hf g Gaardbruger og Selveier 1826 Brandvolds Præstegjeld
Karen Johannesdatter hans Kone g 1835 Brandvolds Præstegjeld
John Olsen deres Søn ug 1860 Grue
Ole Olsen deres Søn ug 1862 Grue
Olia Olsdatter deres Datter ug 1851 Grue
Maria Olsdatter deres Datter ug 1854 Grue
Johannes Johannessen ug Tjenestedreng 1850 Grue
Hans Olsen e Lægdslem 1785 Grue
Johannes Hansen e Føderaadsmand 1792 Brandvolds Præstegjeld bl kvæn norsk
___________________________________________________

The 1900 census has more information on the family but John O. is not listed.

It may also explain the differences in Marie's name as the name on the marriage certificate may be the name of her father's farm. I found a Marie Martinsdatter in the 1865 census with a birthdate of 1863 (closest to the estimated date in her death notice.)
______________________________________________________

Census year: 1865
Municipality: Grue
Municipality number: 0423
Name of domicile: Skulstad øde
Number of persons in this domicile: 5

Name, Family status, Marital status, Occupation, Birth year, Place of birth, Ethnicity

Martin Markusen hf g husmand uden Jord 1834 Grue
Eli Haagensdatter hans Kone g 1831 Grue
Martin Martinsen deres Søn ug 1859 Grue
Halvor Martinsen deres Søn ug 1861 Grue
Marie Martinsdatter deres Datter ug 1863 Grue
________________________________________________________
and "Skulstad øde" just may be name on the marriage certificate.

My husband John had some info on his grandparents. According to him his grandmother was Marie Olson from Oslo (and Grue is about 75 miles NE of Oslo) and the family farm was Risbergen (off one letter. The Norwegian embassy said there was no town by that name).

Thanks for your help. From a Marie Olson in Oslo (impossible to track) to now having a gg grandfather born in 1792 is a hugh step.

Virginia

Perhaps this Louis Berg is my grandfather. My grandfather, Louis Venon Berg, Sr. was born in Massachusetts in 1884, some family records say Boston, but I've never been able to find any official record. His wife's name (at least according to what was told to me) was Mathilda. He married my grandmother, Martha Sandstrom, in Chicago. They had two children: Genevieve and Louis Jr. He was killed on October 12, 1925 in East Chicago, IN.

I'm seeking information on these Berg brothers who emigrated from Sweden probably in the 1890s. Oscar and William went to Bureau Co., Illinois and Frank and Theodore went to Minnesota. Theodore was known to be in Balaton, MN in 1923. John married Hannah Poole, died before 1900 and left one daughter, Mildred. They also had a sister, Anna, who went to Denver and probably never married. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows anything about this family.

This is not my family (only that a relative was married to John Berg Jr.) but this may help you. The following are the obits for John O. Berg and his wife Marie. Also, I believe the initial may stand for Olsen which was probably his given name at birth. Also Solar is probably Solør which may be the little town north of Grue in Hedmark, Norway. There was a John Olsen born 14 May 1860 and baptized 27 May 1860 in the Grue church.

• Edgerton, Wis. - Funeral services for John Berg, 81, retired Wisconsin Power and Light Co. employee, who died Sunday at his home in Fulton, will be held at 1:30 Wednesday in the Berg home and at 2 in the Fulton Congregational church, the Rev. F. W. Schoenfeld, Edgerton, will officiate, and burial will be in Fulton cemetery. He was born in Solar, Norway, May 14, 1860, and came to the United states in 1882. He was married to Marie Martinson in Stoughton, Feb 6, 1887. Since then the family resided in Fulton and vicinity. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. L. A. Kramer, Fulton; Mrs. C. W. Graper, Mayville, N.Y.; Mrs. Nellie Smith, Rhinelander; and Mars. Harvey Crall, Reedsburg; three sons, William Berg, Beloit, John Berg, Fulton, and Robert, Indian Ford; four brothers, Carl Berg, Stoughton, Oscar, Duluth, Minn., and two in Norway, Mrs. Berg died Nov. 28, 1939. (Capital Times (Madison, WI) - 28 October 1941 - Page 8)
• Brother Carl O. Berg married Emma Wangsvick in 1897, she died in 1929. Carl died 16 May 1961.
• Brother in Norway called Albert, still alive in 1961.

• Mrs. John Berg Dies At Home at Fulton - Mrs. John O. Berg Sr., 78, died yesterday at her home in Fulton following an illness of three years. She had lived in the Fulton vacinity since 1887. Born in Norway, Mrs. Berg came to the United States in 1885. She was married to John O. Berg at Stoughton Feb. 6, 1887. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in February, 1937. Survivors are her husband; four daughters, Mrs. La A. Kramer, Fulton; Mrs. D. W. Graper, Mayville, NY; Mrs. Paul Smith, Star Lake, and Mrs. Harvey Crawl, Reedsburg; three sons, William, Beloit, John Jr., Fulton and Robert, Indian Ford; and 15 grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 1:30 at the home and at 2 at the Fulton Congregational church. The Rev. Theodore Hargrave will officiate. Burial will be in Fulton Cemetery. (Capital Times (Madison, WI) - 29 November 1939 - Page 8)
• Mrs. John Berg, of Edgerton, Dies at 78 - Funeral services for Mrs. John O. I know they all ended up in Chicago, Il. according to the Federal Cencus. Unfortunately I cannot locate any other records, so if anyone may know something, please email me. Thank-you.

Yes, you are related to my husband, John.

John O. Berg and Marie (her name is not Olson as previously thought - it's looks like Kirkeguard but the writing is difficult to decipher) were married in WI. A copy of their marriage license can be found at the WI Historical Society on the campus of U of W in Madison. The license just says Norway as birthplace -- no city, etc. I haven't researched ship manifests yet.

Their son John (no middle initial) is my husband's father. He was the brother of Carrie, Minnie, Robert, Bill, and Nellie (I think that's the complete list.) Your father, Robert, Jr., is my husband's first cousin. My Family Tree maker is in limbo so I can't give you birthdays, etc.

My husband's father died about 1976 in Sarasota, FL. His ashes were buried in the Fulton Cemetery the next summer. I don't remember everyone who was at the ceremony but Nellie was there and a brother who was a professor in the Department of Agriculture at Cornell University. My husband John and I went to his house after the ceremony. We communicated with Nellie for several years (she lived in Rhinelander), and lost track of her when she moved to CA to be with her daughter.

Husband John has more information on his aunts and uncles than I do, including his aunts' married names, and probably names of their children. He has some memories of his grandparents also.

I'll try to get a list from him that I can send you. Or better yet maybe I can get my family tree maker up and running but some files are damaged.

Virgnia Berg

P.S. You should go to the Rock County, WI website on gen web (I think that's the site) and it has buriel listings for the Fulton cemetery. Your ggrandparents are buried there.

Thank you for the wonderful information.

Although the death notices for both John and Marie (my husband John's grandparents) have Marie's maiden name as Martinson, that is not her name on the marriage application that my husband and I saw at the WI Historical Society (on the campus of U of W) several years ago.

We moved recently so all paper backups are still in boxes. However if memory seerves us, we think that her name on the marriage application was Marie Sten....erud (or something similar as the hand writing is difficult to read). The application had the birth places for both John and Marie as just Norway.

John always told me his grandmother's name was Marie Olson and she was from Oslo. Appears that he may be partially correct.

VA

Hello All:

If anyone has information regarding William (Wilhelm) E. Berg or Tora or Dora C. Berg (maiden name Winstrand) I have seen listing for Tora as Dora. I am not too sure which one is correct. William came to the U.S. in 1886 from Malmo, Sweden. They lived for some time in Pueblo, Colorado, before moving to San Diego.

I am interested in both William and Tora, as well as their daughters Ingrid (married name Neuman) and Elsie (married name Gray).

If you have information, I would appreciate an e-mail. 1007Lake@gmail.com.

Thanks!
David

Hello, I have been trying to trace ancestry and we might have a hit here. I have relatives from Fulton, Wisconsin. The father is John O. Berg, mother is Maria (or Mary). My grandfather is a son of theirs Robert Berg from Fulton and later Edgerton. My father is Robert Jr. from Edgerton, WI. I recall mention of several great aunts including Carrie and Minnie and a great uncle John. Any clue if there is a connection?
