My G-G Grandfather, Joseph Burgard of Point Township, Northumberland Co., PA, is listed as Joseph Berget in the 1860 Federal Census. The family story is that he was a German-speaking immigrant from Alsace-Lorraine. I suppose the misspelling could be due to his accent. Does anyone know if there is another explanation? Is this Burgard/Berget transition some sort of Anglicanization? Thanks.
PS: He married Anna Margaretha Lau. They were both born approx. 1825.
