He attended village schools in Sweden while living on the family farm in Gefle, Sweden. At age 14 he was apprenticed to learn tailor`s trade. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in 1856 in Sweden. Emigrated with father and four brothers from Sweden to USA in 1856. He first found employment in Victoria where he worked for Jona Hallstrom a tailor at 8 dollars a month and board and washing. After the Civil War he became a solicitor of life insurance. He also committed time to music where he played the violin and was a leader of several string bands. In 1866 he was elected Justice of the Peace in Galesburg. From 1872 through 1880 he served as Sheriff, then he was elected Senator from the 22nd District composed of Knox and Mercer counties. In 1887, he was elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate. On May 1, 1889, The Governor appointed him Warden of the Illinois State Penitentiary at Joliet. He resigned from this position to take an active role in management of the Covenant Mutual Life Association of Illinois. He was its president for nearly 20 years. He visited almost every state of the Union, and in 1882 he took an extensive trip through England, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, and Ireland.
