Johan Berggren b. 1793 Sweden

Berggren, Johan
b. 20 Feb 1793
By parish, Kopparbergs co, Sweden
d. USA
m. Larsdotter, Karin
d. 24 Oct 1845

Born in By parish in Kopparbergs county, Dalarna province of Sweden. Johan`s age on the passenger list was listed as 59 in 1856, so this varies with the reported birthdate. Johan Berggren was a self-educated man, winning his way to success by his shrewdness and native ability. He was a great reader, but he learned his most valuable lessons in the school of experience. He held several minor offices and looked after cases in courts, administering estates and the like. For thirteen years he ran a flouring mill. Afterwards he purchased a farm on which he lived until he immigrated to this county in 1856.(notes from Tom Lisco, 2003) Emigrated from Sweden Aug. 23, 1856 on the ship Caroline (a small sailing vessel) out of Gavile, Swenden which took nine weeks to reach New York on Oct. 27, 1856. He brought his five sons (John 25, Louis 17, August Werner 14, Charley 12, and William 11), and John`s wife An Stina. His wife, Karin, was deceased prior to the emigration. The family proceeded directly to Oneida, Knox County, Illinois. Berggren is reported to mean `Mountain Branch` in Swedish. (this may explain the frequency of the Berggren name in Sweden.) Johan was reported to be a well-read man who supplemented the country school instructions for his children.

Minnie Berggren b. 1888 MO

Berggren, Minnie Mae
b. 28 Sep 1888
Green Ridge, MO
d. 04 Feb 1970
Zillah,Yakima,WA
m. Purchase, George H.
10 Oct 1906
d. 25 Jan 1964

Minnie`s father was born in Amots Bruk, Ockelbo Socken, Sweden. Her mother was born in Boonville, Missouri. Minnie`s grandfather came over from Sweden following the death of his wife, and he emigrated from Sweden with his five sons (William being the youngest at age eleven). Following her marriage to George Purchase, they had eleven children - all of whom were born in Pettis County, Missouri. She had her first child at age 19 and her last child was born when she was 39 years old. At age 49, she left Missouri as the Depression forced the family to move to the Yakima Valley (WA) for a fresh start. Once established they purchased a farm house and 20 acres near Zillah, WA where they lived their final years.

They lived among many Swedish families where the kids made fun of him because he was not able to speak Swedish. In later years he claimed that he had never married; however family records indicate that he married Mary Sharp in Troy, Kansas, and they had a child, Leta Mae in 1919. Witnesses to marriage were: Mrs. J.G. "Flossie" Blanton and Mrs. Fred Morris. Minister was J. Tilden Sapp.

The Arth family of Minnesota is have a family gathering on July 10, 2004. We've lost contact with one branch of this family. Anna Arth (b. 1886, d. 1952) married Eric Berggren (tho sometimes it shows up as Bergren). They had three children: Moritmer, Berton and Marie [not sure if these spellings are correct). Mortimer worked for the Forest Lake MN newspaper at one point. Supposedly Berton moved to California. Not sure what happened to Marie. If anyone is part of this family could you contact me (before or after the reunion is fine).

Anna's siblings included Edward, Henry, John and Margaret. Her parents were Joseph Arth and Margaret Reiter.

I believe Gustaf immigrated to the United States around 1903 and ended up in Tacoma, Washington. Census records show a Gustaf Berggren in Tacoma in 1930. He had 4 children at that time: Arthur, Oscar, Sylvia, and Helen.
Carl A. Berggren 1849-1916

Plattsmouth Journal, Thursday, June 22, 1916
Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska
C.A. BERGGREN DIES AT THE HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER IN OMAHA
From Tuesday’s Daily.
Yesterday afternoon at the home of his daughter in Omaha, C.A. BERGGREN, for the past twenty-two years a resident of Plattsmouth and a gentleman universally respected and esteemed, passed away after an illness of several months. Mr. Berggren was taken sick last November and continued to gradually grow worse until it was decided to take him to the hospital in Omaha, and for several weeks he remained at the Immanuel hospital in that city, but despite all that could be done by loving and willing hands to bring him back to health, he continued to fail until the death messenger called him home to his last long rest.
Carl A. Berggren was born May 6, 1849, at Stockholm, Sweden, where he was reared to manhood and made his home until the year 1881, when with his family he came to America, reaching the United States in July of that year, and came directly west, settling at Omaha, where he made his home until May, 1894, when he moved to Plattsmouth, and had since made his home in this city. He leaves to mourn his death the grief-stricken widow and four children – Carl BERGGREN of Sheridan, Wyo.; Mrs. O.W. JOHNSON, Godfrey BERGGREN and Miss Hannah BERGGREN, all living in Omaha. The funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Streight undertaking rooms, and interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery.
The death of Mr. Berggren came as a severe blow to his many friends in this city, who had been hoping that he might be spared to them for a few years at least, and they will share with the family the deep grief that has been visited upon them.
Re: Looking for ancester's of Holger Richard Berggren.

Just ran across your inquiry. I had an uncle Holger Berggren who passed away some time ago. My grandparents, Andrew (Anderson) Berggren and Anna Sundberg immigrated to Canada from Sweden probably in early 1900. They had seven children, Holger (Halgar ?), Walt, Beauford, Earl, Raglund (sp?), Kenneth, and Phyllis. Halgar only went by the name of Richard and was married, had several children and lived in Michigan. My father was born in Manitoba, Canada, and the family moved to Superior Wisconsin sometime later. Please let me know if this information is helpful, and if you would be interested in more information.
