I am also looking for a John Bergmann (John A. Bergmann) family from the same region in Illinois, St. Clair Co. However, my grandfather, John A. Bergmann was born 29 Dec 1868 in Illinois and died about 1923 in St. Louis after living most of his life in south St. Louis. My grandmother was Mary C. Metter, also from the same region in Illinois.
FYI, there is now a 51 CD set of the complete 1880 US census available at many LDS Family History Centers and other genealogy societies. (The cost is $49 from the LDS FamilySearch website.) You might find your John Bergmann family using that.
