Hello! Thank you for responding to my e-mail. I have been in contact w/a relative of yours, Nancy Brame, a granddaughter of Emma Berquist Brown. I am so glad that you contacted me. For years I searched for August and his family, and I was afraid that everyone who might be interested in the Anderson/Bergquist/Berquist family had passed on, then I heard from Nancy and NOW you!

Would you be interested in giving me a little information about Gilbert's family? If so, please contact me at LBergquistHowell@gmail.com. Is there anything from my previous postings that you would like to know more about? If I have answers, I will be happy to supply them.

I hope I shall be hearing from you in the future!

Lynne Bergquist Howell

August and Palma Berquist lived in Youngstown, Ohio and are buried in Lake Park Cemetary. All their children are deceased. My Dad (died in 1960) was Gilbert Berquist. It is my understanding that August died of black young disease and Palma lived to a ripe old age. At the time of her death she was living with her bachelor sons Leonard and Arnold.

Augusta Elnora Anderson (later changed to Bergquist), a/k/a Nora who m. an Ogden.
2. Emma Dorothea Anderson (later changed to Bergquist), a/k/a Emma who m. August moved to McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA, abt. 1900. In the Federal Census for that year he is found living as a boarder in the household of the widow Palma Larson. Palma had three children from her previous marriage: Ellen, Charles, and Leonard, as well as several other Scandanavian boarders.

In the 1910 Federal Census for McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA, we find that August and Palma have married and the enumerator lists his step-children w/the name Bergquist as well as his own children: Emma, Walter, Bernard, and Arnold.

In the 1920 Federal Census for McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA, his surname is Burquist, and Ellen and Charles are missing from the household, but Gilbert is added.

I do not have the documentation in front of me, but there is an August Bergquist and family living in the Youngstown, OH area in the 1930 Federal Census.
obit fyi - Lois Marie BERGQUIST, 1925 NY - 2007 CA.

not related - for your info only

Bergquist, Lois Marie

LOIS MARIE BERGQUIST, Ph.D. Sept. 10, 1925 - Sept. 14, 2007 North Hollywood, California Gifted Scientist, Master Teacher, Constant Humanitarian. Dr. Bergquist was born in Jamestown, New York, the only child of Dewey and Teckla Bergquist. The family moved to Los Angeles when Lois was in high school. Upon her father's early death, Dr. Bergquist became the sole support of the family. She credited her Swedish ancestry for her dedication to career and her motivation to reach goals. While working full-time as a secretary, she enrolled at Los Angeles City College, transferred to the University of Southern California, and earned her B.S. in Bacteriology and later an M.S. in Education. In 1973 she received her Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. As a woman pursuing microbiology in the 1940s, she was a pioneer and became an inspiration to women seeking careers in science. Her inquisitiveness and dedication made her an exceptional researcher and scientist. While a student at USC, she was one of four authors of a commissioned study, "The Effect of Fat Levels of the Diet on General Nutrition," published by the Journal of Nutrition in 1952. That was the beginning of some 130 articles and several books which she would author or co-author. Dr. Bergquist was a consultant at various institutions. From 1973 to 1990 she was Consulting Microbiologist at Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center. She also served as Clinical Professor of Microbiology in the USC School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy. Because of her positive experience as a student at a community college, Dr. Bergquist accepted a position at Los Angeles Valley College where her illustrious career teaching microbiology began in 1960 and continued until her retirement in 2000. To her students she gave the fullest measure of support, providing assistance and encouragement in the classroom and in the lab. The observation of Henry Adams that "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops" was never more valid than for Dr. Bergquist. As a teacher, she developed courses on the biology of cancer and AIDS. As a humanitarian, she gave empathy and energy to provide awareness of those devastating diseases to science students and to the larger community. At LAVC, she was a member of the Faculty Senate and was sought after as a member of committees, ranging from academic rights and responsibilities to social events. At the college and in the community, she was exceedingly generous with time and money, giving to programs, scholarships, worthy causes, and individuals. Dr. Bergquist earned honors such as Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in Science, International Authors and Wr iters Who's Who, and Who's Who Among American Teachers. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award of America, 1973 and National Science Foundation Faculty Grants for Advanced Study, 1970 and 1975. In 2006 the Southern California branch of the American Society for Microbiology acknowledged her as one "who achieved emeritus status by [her] contributions." Lois enjoyed Dodger games in Brooklyn with her father and continued to be a fan in Los Angeles. Her favorite memory was attending the 1988 World Series game when injured Kirk Gibson hit his ninth inning, game-winning home run. Dr. Bergquist is survived by her cousins, "Dolly" Wickmark, Erma Lanning, and Virginia Furry and by her "adopted" West Coast family. She will be greatly missed by her beloved students. A memorial scholarship for Dr. Bergquist is being established. Contributions may be sent to: LAVC Foundation, Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Avenue, Valley Glen, CA 91401. Please make check to LAVC Foundation and write Lois Bergquist Scholarship Fund on memo line.
Published in the Los Angeles Daily News on 10/14/2007.
Nearly every Bergquist I have ever met, including in my own family, came from Varmland, Sweden. Bergquist means "mountain branch" and it's an adopted name. My Bergquists were originally Eriksons. Your ancestors would have surnames created from their fathers first name. My ancestor John Erikson was the son of Erik Pierson. His father was Pier something son. Hope this helps

Hello,

I'm also a decendant of Gust and Meta. Their son Gust was my Great Grandfather... I'm the source of most of the info posted on Ancestry.com. I've compiled most of it by talking to the Great Aunts, census records... I've seen copy of the family bible and that's where I got the list of Mom and Dad plus all of kids. If you can locate where in Sweden the family orginated that would be great. I'm just seeing the message board and wading through the data. Look forward to hearing from you.

Jay

Some one informed me there is a Sven Bergquist registered Salem Luthern Church, St. Cloud, Benton Co. MN. b. 1858-05-03 in Munkarp M.County Sweden. I can't fine that on a map of Sweded, Help. Also his wife Bothilda Bergquist Nilssson b. 1862-05-10 Norra Rorum M. County Sweden, Can't find that either. He also found CD-Emigraten of Swen 29, Munkarp, left Malmo ( I found that on map) June 21, 1888. There is also a Bothilda Ljungquist born same date as above in Hoor M-County who left for Copenhagen 4-26-1889. These two women have the same birthdate. Could they be same person? Family is listed in 1910 census in Sherburne County, MN. There is an Axel Bergquist listed in LDS files with same birth date but different place of birth,
Sweden. Are they even close? Any help will be appreciated. 1910 census has family listed living in Sherburne County. Roll 710, name and ages of children are strange, Allison 11, Robert T. 11, Glin 2. 1920 census shows family in Benton Co. with only sons Robert 18 and Glen N, 12 at home. Can't find other children. Would like info on all children except Olga Katherine. I have her. 0Thanks.

Hello ! I have just started researching my family tree here.I am amazed at how how common (and how many variations there are of) my Grandfathers and Great Grandfathers name thier are.
My Great, Great Grandpa and Grandma were Gustaf and Mary Bergquist(McKimm).
I am the Great Granddaughter of Ed and Meta Bergquist(Vansickle), Granddaughter of Gust Adolphus and Frances Bergquist(Lieber), Daughter of James and Betty Bergquist(Smith).I spent most of my youth surrounded by the 19 Bergquist descendants and/or thier families, living in Prescott , Michigan.
I don't think I can add any additional information to the family tree, except for the more recent descendants.
