Mildred "Millie" Leonette Stahl, 82 passed away at her residence in Johnstown, Ohio on June 24, 2010.

Millie was born in Covington Kentucky, (Kenton County, Ky.) to the late Leo Berkemeir and Elizabeth Henn Berkemeir.

She was a resident of Johnstown, Ohio for over 30 years and a member of The Church of the Ascension.

Millie married the love of her life Donald Stahl on September 17, 1949 and shared over 50 years together before his passing.

She was a pilot, and a long time member of the 99ers. She flew in a number of races and exhibition and powder puff derbies.
An avid ice skater, water skier, and enjoyed traveling in her RV.
As mentioned by her family she was ornery and enjoyed life to the fullest and always looking for an adventure or a dare. She will be sorrowfully missed by all who knew her.

Millie's survivors include her children, Peggy (Jack) Berger of Georgia, Jeff Stahl of Johnstown, Ohio; grandson, Jason Stahl of Missouri; and special friend, Nedra Akins.

Along with Millie's husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Jean; and sister, Marilyn.

A memorial visitation for Mildred "Millie" Leonette Stahl 82, of Johnstown, Ohio, will be held at the Criss Schoedinger Funeral Home, 179 Granville St., Newark, Ohio on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

After weeks of searching St Martin's Catholic
Church records in Greven, Westphalia, Germany,
my findings were limited to one person because
of bad images on the microfilm; that person was
Joesph Herman Berkemeier (spelled Berkemeyer in
the church records).
Joesph Herman had 1 son, who died early, and two
daugthers; one of the daughters married Willhelm
Veltrup but when he and his wife inherited the
farm, he took the name of the farm and became a
Berkemeier - which was a custom in many European
countries; this custom ended in the late 1800s or
early 1900s.

For the last few weeks, I have been researching
church records in Greven, Westphalia, Germany.
My wife's great, great grandparents, Martin
Berkemeier and Elisabeth Overmann, were baptised
and married in the Greven Catholic Church. In
the records, the name 'Berkemeier' is spelled
'Berkemeyer'. The earliest records did not show
any Berkemeyer listings though but there was one
clue, another Berkemeier was listed as being from
Albachton, Germany; I found and requested the LDS
film for that church. When I have completed my
research, I will post my findings on this bulletin
board.

My wife's great, great grandfather was Johann
Berkemeier who came to this county in 1882.
Johann was born with the last name of Veltrop
but took his mother's maiden name when he came
to the U.S. Johann had a brother named August
who also took the name Berkemeier. These men
were from Greven, Westphalia. Their mother was
Maria Gertrude Berkemeier, daughter of Herman
Berkemeier and Anna Maria Worfenberg. The father
of Johann and August was Willhelm Schulz Veltrop.
Johann was born in 1843 and married Elisabeth
Overman.

If you have any information on any of these families,
would you please let me know?

My BERKEMEIER line is from Cincinnati, OH and Northern KY. The earliest name I have is of Catherine (GRIFFIN)BERKEMEIER b. 3/8/1855 in Patterson NJ. d. 7/12/1915 in Cincinnati. Married Unknown BERKEMEIER. Had at least two children. John and Arthur. Arthur never married. Died 9/23/1961 in Cincinnati. John Married Catherine P. Hessling had two children Elizabeth b. 1888 and Robert b. 1891. John died shortly after.

My mom's maiden name is Berkemeier. Her father's name was Irvin August Berkemeier and his father was August Berkemeier, Jr. August Berkemeier, Sr. emigrated to US from Germany and was on the Baltimore City Council after the Civil War. I think he came to US in 1870's. He is listed in some books on Maryland politics and Germans in Maryland. My mom's maiden name is Betty Lou Berkemeier. Her brother is Irvin Berkemeier who lives in Delaware. Are you any relation?

Martin Berkemeier had a farm implement shop in
Manilla, Crawford Co., IA ; he was born abt 1871
in Germany. Martin married an Effie Means who
was a widow and they had the following children
Maxmillian, Frank, Donald, Mary, Beulah (?) and
Robert. The sons changed the spelling to Berkemeir.
Any information on this family would be much apprec-

I'm sorry I don't have any information for you on Birkenmeyer, but I do have a question for you. On the Uhlen side, would you happen to have a Teresa Uhlen by any chance? I'm trying to find out if Uhlen was her maiden or married name. Thank you for any assistance you might be able to give.

You've done more than you can imagine! The Teresa Uhlen I was trying to find would be the one who died in 1936. I have a letter written by her to known members of my family in which she identifies herself as being the sister-in-law of Henry Schoo. Now, she could have been the sister-in-law via marriage, or sister-in-law by virtue of her sister's (Christine's)marriage to Henry. As every record I've found shows Christine to be Christine Schoo, I wanted to know her maiden name. This confirms it was Uhlen, which now means I have a further means of going back across the pond with this family.

It also means I will be keeping your family name in mind as I do so. Thank you SO much! If you think I have any information that might help you, please ask. The Bi(e)ke(n)meyer name is not one I've encountered before, but you never know!

Roeland, I have no idea who Longina Berkemeyer or Berkemeier's father was. All I know is my husband's great grandfather married a Longina Berkemeier in October 1867 at Old St. Mary's RC church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Their marriage was previously unknown. I would like to know what happened to Longina Berkemeier Borgelt. Philipp Borgelt said he was a widower when entering a veteran's home near Dayton Ohio in late 1870's. Perhaps there were children. I have Dora Berkemeier from Germany, no dates. But she married Bernard Brinkhaus (b. 1869, Germany) and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they had at least one child, Bernard Joseph Brinkhaus in Dec, 1890. Her husband died in Cincinnati in 1924. Perhaps our searches are related. I am looking for any kind of family history of my Grandfather George W. Berkemeyer of Palmyra IN. He was raised in Jeffersonville IN (just north of Louisville) and siblings were Joseph, Joshua and Mary. There may have been more. I was told the name was originally Berkenmeyer or something similar. I am looking for info on Catharina Elsbein (Landwehr) Berkemeier. Her father was a Lanwehr, but took the name of the family farm when he married Fenne Marie Berkemeier. Many ways to spell that last name! Believe they came from around the Schale, Westphalia area. Catharina was my gggrandmother, and was married to Hermann Heinrich Finke.

Looking for any desendants of, or anyone who might know any information about Peter Birkenmeyer b. 1853 or 1854 in Louisville, Ky. Peter's parents were Philipp Birkenmeyer and Katherine Uhlen. Philipp was born in Obrigheim, Germany on Feb. 12, 1825 and came to Louisville in 1853. His brother Joseph Birkenmeyer b. 1820, came to Louisville in 1854, married Mary Voll Acker on Nov. 1, 1856. A son George was born to them on Aug. 9, 1857 in Louisville. I am thinking Peter, Joseph and George moved to the northern Kenyucky area around the Cincinnati, Ohio area. No information after 1877 can be found about them in Louisville. The name Birkenmeyer might be spelled differently. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Laura,
I have not done a lot of research on the Uhlen family. All I know is that there are two Theresa Uhlens buried in ST. Michael Cemetery. The first one being born on Aug. 5, 1835 and died on Oct. 12, 1893. She is burie next to Benedict Uhlen who was born on Feb. 24, 1826 and died on Sept. 2, 1899. I am assuming they are husband and wife. the second one was born in 1859 and died in 1936. She is buried next to Josphine Uhlen, 1862 - 1878. I believe they are probably sisters. Most of the Uhlens' are buried in St. Michael. I found a Clenens and Anna Uhlen buried in St. John Cemetery. this is about all I know at this time.

My gr.- gr - grandfather Philipp spelled it Birkenmaier when he first came to Louisville in 1853. In 1660 in Rauenberg, Germany, Philipp's gr. -gr.- gr.- gr.- grandfather spelled it Berckenmeyer.

Any information on Henry Berkemeyer would be appreciated. He was born in Cincinnati Ohio in March 1850 (possibly 1847)- listed as 33 in 1880 Ohio census and as 50 in Brooklyn NY 1900 census. He married Elizabeth Tork (or York - she was born in Kentucky in Feb 1853. I seem to have come to an end in getting any information on either of my ggrandparents. They had three children listed in the 1880 census - Edward, Harry and Tillie (Matilda). Matilda was my grandmother. They had a total of nine children, but that was years later (in Brooklyn).
