Well, this might sound kinda of confussing, but I'll do my best not to confuse you. My Grandmother and Geraldine I believe are half sisters. That's why I was looking for the Obit, to see for sure. I am almost 100 percent for sure they are, but I don't have the proof yet. Geraldines mothers name was Leatha and she was first married to Fred Heller that is my Great Grandfather, he left Leatha & Geraldine and Leatha remarried to Alfred Gunn. I believe Geraldine used the last name Gunn instead of Heller, I don't know if Alfred ever adopted her or not. My Grandmother never went by the last name of Heller either, she always went by her Step fathers name. My Great Grandfather Fred Heller's first wife died but his 2nd & 3rd wife he left them both, from what my Great Grandmother told my Grandmother he was a nice man they never fought, he just went to work one day and never came home and she never saw him after that.
Anyways, my Grandmother is still living and she has always wanted to know more about Geraldine, so I have been trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
A friend of mine found a birth announcement in the Chicago Paper that stated Geraldine (Gunn) & Russell Berkes had a son, that's what got me digging to find out if this is my Geraldine, I think it is but like I say I have no proof, so I was hoping to find someone to confrim that it is her or that it is not her. So I will keep digging and if you come up with anything please let me know. Do you know if Geraldine & Russells son had a family? They might know more about Geraldine. Thanks, so much for replying to my message, I really appreciate it!

Hi: This is all I have on the "Berkes" side of my family. I hope it helps some.

Russell Berkes DOB: 6 Apr 1913 -DOD: 27 Nov 1995 was the son of Edward and Sadie (Irene) Berkes. I believe Edward Berkes was a detective.

Geraldine Berkes- 22 Sep 1919 - Feb 1996. Both passed away in Chicao area of Chicago Heights/Saulk Village Cook Illinos.

Maybe together we can find them, so far I can't find their obituaries either.

How are you related to them? I beleive Sadie Berkes was my Grandmothers sister.

I look forward to hearing from you. Joanie

Hi Laura!
My mother, Veronica Berkes Fraser, is the great grandaughter of a Jakob Berkes, also spelled Berckes, who emigrated from Ernzen Germany (near Trier on the Luxembourg border) to Winfied, IL. He was born in 1800; so not your family line. However, are you sure that your family was from Hungary? There were alot of Berkes' in the area I referenced. Today, there are many in Northern Illinois.
Mary Fraser Hodson
Champaign, IL

You may have more information then I have.

Who is your mother? If she was a cousin to Edmond then WE are cousins, right?

Do you know the location of the wedding? It should have happened in Illinois in the West Chicago / Aurora / Elgin area.

I have photos of the wedding of John and Mary but do not know the date, we can only guess. All of their children have passed. The last was Susan and she passed in 1994.

Please get back to me so we can compare notes and other information.

Thanks so much - - - Jo

P.S.
Tammy, have you ever heard of a CHARLES BERKES? According to the Census he was born in Indiana, but he died in Philadelphia in 1976. He was born about 1886. He worked for a time (around 1919-1920) in Mobile, AL as a boilermaker. He married Isadore Danzey, a widow, in Mobile in 1919.

I wish to communicate with a descendant or close relative. Seems like Berkes is not a common name! dhgenie@att.net or haywarddiane@hotmail.com.
I just found this site, surprised to even see a Berkes of any kind, so now you have my interest kindled.... All I know is my Grand Father was Joseph, wife Anna, imigrated from hungary apx turn of the century and had a hotel in Chicago. Had two sons, Joe and Mike that settled in northern indiana after world war II. Where do you begin to find a trail.... I would like to try!
