This is actually my last day on ancestry so if you could send any information to contactlaurac@msn.com, that would be great!
My great gramma was Adelaide Berkeley, born in Washington DC in July 1883 (I believe). she married Peter James Miller, age 24 from Denmark, when she was around 19. He died at a young age in Chicago.

Her mother's name was also Addie, her maiden name was Kuntz, but sometimes they spelled it Koontz, my Dad just remembered the name as Kuntz. She married Benjamin Berkeley, who also died young...one month after his youngest child was born!

I knew Peter Miller had died early, but the same fate had befallen my great great grandparents as well!

Thanks for helping me! I may go ahead and order the DNA test.

Sincerely,
Laura Jean Carson (Herzstock)
Very happy customer! I've been to one of their conferences, and met some of the principles - they seem very interested in helping genealogists. Although I am an engineer, and worked for the Navy for 34 years (in and out of uniform), I've learned a lot about DNA since starting the BARTLETT Project in 2002. It has helped a lot of us with our genealogies. You can see my posts on the Rootsweb and GenForum boards and on the rootsweb emails for BARTLETT, BARTLEY, BARKLEY and BERKLEY/BERKELEY. I teach genealogy-DNA several times a year (free) including at the DC and Baltimore FHC annual conferences. The more DNA participants in DNA testing, the more we all learn.

I've also been a donor to Rootsweb, almost from the start, and I'm a long-time subscriber to Ancestry. This is my hobby.

Jim Bartlett

Laura,

The classic DNA test is Y-DNA which only men can take and it shows matches with other men with the same surname. So clearly this would not work in this case. Your brother's Y-DNA test would only show results for his surname.

A newer test is called Family Finder - it tests across all of your DNA, and anyone can take it. It reports others who have taken the same test who have large segments of DNA which match your's, indicating that you both got that segment from a Common Ancestor and are therefore you are cousins. I have over 200 such matches now, and 62 of them and I have determined our Common Ancestors - most in the 4 to 7th cousin range, but 4 of them are 10th cousins.

If you are thinking about taking this DNA test, use this link to join our project and purchase your DNA test.
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=C45062

I'll be glad to help you with the results. Some of them may be on your BERKELY line.

In the mean time, please let me know your G-gm's name and birth info - I'll try to find her tree.

Jim jim4bartletts@verizon.net
Jim,
I am the researcher of our family tree. My great grandmother was a Berkeley or Berkley, and her mother and father before that. I have a brother that could get tested, but I'm not sure how the lineage thing works here, since it was our great grand mother (not grandfather), but through our Dads side of the family, his Mom's Mom.

OK, that was confusing, good thing I'm writing all this down. The purpose of my wanting to know, is that my great gramma Adelaide Berkeley was an absolutely wonderful lady, she died when I was 5, but I still remember her. She told stories of going back to Virginia, I don't know where, west of Williamsburg as my Dad recalls.

My sisters and I are also interested in becoming DAR's as my Great Grandma Adelaide always wanted to be one, but probably didn't have the money, nor the time to become one.

Thank you!
Berkleys In Tennessee

I'd appreciate any information which could be provided on the Berkley surname in Tennessee, amd specifically, those with ties to Grainger and Knox Counties.

As far as I can tell, James Alan Berkley (1833 - 1920)was originally born in Appamatox, VA, and served in the 22nd Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. After the war, he relocated to Grainger County (Rutledge), TN. I have found conflicting information as to his marital status, primarily, as it pertains to the death of his first wife Sarah Frances Foster (wed in VA) in 1856 - which is entirely unconfirmed (some sources say she passed away in 1880, others as late as 1896)- and his re-marriage to Mary Berkley (uncertain of maiden name) in 1891. Simply, I can't confirm the year of Sarah's death, nor do I have proof of his marriage to Mary, sometime later.

Beyond this, I would simply like to know as much about the Berkley name as possible, from before the move the Grainger County, during their time there, and until the present day.

If someone would like to share any information (particularly copies of any documents or pictures, if available), I would be most appreciative, and certainly willing to share whatever amount of information or insight which I might provide, as well, however small.

Thanks in advance.

DNA Sale

There are very good DNA sales during Dec 2010! The company we use is Family Tree
DNA. Go to: www.familytreedna.com You can click on the FAQ tab on the top bar for lots more information on any of their tests.

They now have a sale for the best DNA tests: Y37, Y67, mtDNAPlus and Family
Finder. Personally, I don't recommend the Y67 test expect in selected situations - we have been able to determine which line everyone in the project belongs to with just Y25 and Y37 testing, and so far there has been almost no additional info from the Y67 tests.

I also have a word of caution about the mtDNA tests. Don't take this test hoping to find a match you didn't know about - the probabilities are very slim. The DNA matches can go back 500-1,000 years, so most of them are way beyond the genealogical timeframe we usually work in. However, if one of these situations fits you, then the mtDNAPlus test is a good one:
1. You are just interested in your Deep Ancestry, and want to know which one (if any) of the "Seven Daughters of Eve" [google it] you descend from.
2. You know of two distant cousins (one could be yourself) whose common female ancestor you want to confirm - if you both test and match, you have a confirmation.
3. You want to take the mtDNA test, and then find another person with an all-female descent from one of your all-female-line ancestors to also test.

The BEST NEWS is a good sale price on the Family Finder DNA test. When you take this test, Family Tree DNA reports back to you the names and emails of all the people who have DNA matches with you and have a high probability of being a cousin to you. Your common ancestor could be any of your ancestors 3, 4, 5, or 6 generations back, and sometimes much farther back. It all depends on which parts of their DNA your ancestors passed down to you and down to the other person taking the test. So far I have 13 matches that range from a double-third cousin to three 10th cousins and one 12th cousin.
The path between me and these 13 common ancestors passes through 37 different surnames in my tree. I think this is an excellent way to confirm (with DNA) your paper trail research.

If you have any link to any BERKLEY line, you are invited to join our project for any of the tests above (YDNA, mtDNA or Family Finder). You may use this link to see the sale prices and to sign up:
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=C45062

DNA Testing Kits make great gifts - the whole process is very interesting and informative, and since matches will continue to come in for months and years to come, the gift lasts a long time. The DNA Testing Kit itself will be good for many months, so you can also get one now for a reunion later.

Jim Bartlett
BERKLEY/BERKELEY DNA NEWS Update August 2010

BARTLETT/BERKLEY DNA Results Overview

So far we have 181 participants, plus 9 additional participants with mtDNA, only. 15 participants have ordered the new Family Finder DNA Test.

Using these results we have matching DNA that “proves” 18 separate lines, none of which is related to any of the others in Colonial America. Some lines could possibly be related before the immigrants came to America, but most lines do not relate to each other for over 1,000 years. So there were at least 18 Immigrants to the Colonies. Beware of statements that all BARTLETTs descend from one line; or there were 2 or 3 brothers who came to America – one went north and one went south. There are at least 18 different lines. See also Explanatory Notes at the end.

Group B [Team 3]; Richmond Co, VA [11 matches] Haplogroup E1b1b1a2 – Patriarch (maybe the immigrant): Thomas BARTLETT 1705-1783 Richmond Co, VA (descendants of 3 sons have matching DNA); also matching is Nimrod BARTLETT c1760s SC to KY to AR; and Louis Frederick BARTLETT c1885-1956 of Cumberland, MD

Group C; Somerset Co, MD & Dobbs Co, NC [10 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 - Immigrant/Patriarch: Nicholas BARTLETT I b 1642 England or France; of Somerset Co, MD; [ref: “The Bartlett Line from the Mathews Collection by J. Alonzo Mathews” extracted and preserved by LT Thos M Neel]; also matching is Samuel BARTLETT 1750 of Dobbs Co, NC [ref “Family Lines” by Adelle Bartlett Harper, 1973. NB: Adelle had Samuel as son of Samuel BARCLIFT of Perquimans Co, NC – that ancestry is not proved and is contradicted by the DNA results; the partriarch is probably Nicholas]

Group D [Team 7]; VA; Essex/Spotsylvania Co, VA [4 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Patriarch: Thomas BARTLETT b 1670 of Essex Co, VA, through his only known son William b 1690 of Spotsylvania Co, VA (descendants of 2 sons have matching DNA)

Group E: BERK[E]LEY from Westmoreland and Loudoun Co, VA; [4 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Patriarch: Thomas BERKLEY b 1690 (descendants of 2 sons have matching DNA) [ref: “BERKLEY – A Family History” by Waverly Lee Berkley, III (self published)]; also includes Garner BARTLETT of Montgomery Co, MD

Group F [Teams 9 & 11]; Plymouth, MA; Henry Co, VA; KY; TN [21 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Immigrant/Patriarch: Robert BARTLETT b 1603 Puddleton, Dorset, England, of “Anne”, lived Plymouth, MA m Mary WARREN, desc of Mayflower; (descendants of at least 2 sons have matching DNA) [ref: The Society of Descendants of Robert Bartlett of Plymouth, MA – www.bartlettsociety.com ]; also includes John BARTLETT of Buncombe Co, NC; and brothers Joseph BARTLETT 1765 VA, Joshua BARTLETT 1768 NC, and Nathan BARTLETT 1751 (11 descendants of several sons have matching DNA) ; and John BARTLETT d 1801 Greene Co, KY (m Priscilla) (descendants of 2 sons have matching DNA). All of these 21 results match, indicating the TN & KY lines probably descend from the Plymouth, MA Patriarch.
.
Group G [Team 6]; VA; Warren Co, NC [7 matches]; Haplogroup R1b1b2 – Patriarch: Samuel BARTLETT b c1702 Essex Co, VA, d aft 1733 Pr Geo Co, VA [ref “The Bartlett Tree & Thee” by Hope Bartlett Taylor]; also includes James BARTLETT 1760 VA - 1823 Patrick Co, VA; also Starling BARTLETT b 1783 VA, m 1797 GA; William BARTLETT b 1784 VA of Weakley Co, NC; and Thomas BARTLETT b 1731 Somerset, England > Thomas > Charles to Canada; and John BARTLETT 1677-1761 of Norwalk, CT [Team 6]. Lines from different Haplogroups do not relate for thousands of years, or more. Usually, by looking at the specific Haplotypes of living descendants, we can determine what the Haplotype of the earliest Ancestor would have been.

Here is how to understand the information above – I have:
- given each BARTLETT line a Group Letter; and noted in brackets if there is a BARTLETT Team [see http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cst/bartlett/index.h... for the Teams];
- noted the general area(s) they were from;
- shown the number of matching DNA results in brackets;
- listed the Haplogroup [you can google it to learn about the Deep Ancestry];
- listed an Immigrant or Patriarch, where known;
- provided any published references (books or websites) about that line. Please send any corrections or additions to jim4bartetts@verizon.net.

For those who are interested, the following is a list of Groups for which a Deep Clade [DC] has been done on at least one of the tests in the Group. This test confirms the Haplogroup – others in this Group do not need to pay for a DC test, as the results would be the same. This information has virtually no impact on genealogy research; it’s mainly used for ancestry thousands of years ago, before surnames.

Group B Haplogroup E1b1b1a2 [DC = V13+,V36+,V27-,P65-];

Group C Haplogroup R1b1b2 [DC]

Group F Haplogroup R1b1b2 [DC]
.
Group I Haplogroup I2b1* [DC, M223+]

Group J Haplogroup I1d [DC, L22+,P109-]

Group L Haplogroup R1b1b2 [DC, M265+]

Group O Haplogroup R1b1b2a1a3 [NULL439]

Group R Haplogroup I2a [DC, P37.2+]

Group V Haplogroup I1* [DC,M253+]

Group W Haplogroup R1b1b2a1a4 [DC,V106+,L48+]

Hi again Eleanor,

The only info I have on Martin & Helena Gillman is that a couple of that name (Martin Gillman and Ellinor Healy) were married in the Diocese of Cork & Ross, County Cork in Ireland in 1778, some 17 years before St. Leger Joseph's birth. And in 1813, some 35 years after their marriage (!) a boy, Francis Gillman was baptised (son of Martin and Eleanor Gillman) at St. Olave's Church, Bermondsey, which I believe is an Anglican church- almost certainly not the same couple, unless this was an adult baptism.

Where did you find the entry for St. Leger Martin Gillman?
I do know that in Southwark, London, in 1833, an Eleanor Gillman aged 70 died -just old enough to have been married in Cork in 1778, and to have borne our ancestor in 1795, if that was the case. Most interesting that you have the Isle of Wight baptism entry for 1795.I have the marriage entry for John and Jane Berkley in 1821, and St. Leger John's birth certificate in August 1853. I did know about Easter's twin Sophia, and you may be interested to know my great aunt was Esther Mary, obviously named after her grandmother and great-grandmother.

Sadly, I think my family research is now grinding to a halt, as I have gone as far as I can reasonably go without spending a fortune delving into parish records which are not yet available to the average researcher. Do you have an e-mail address at which I can reach you?

Regards,

Mick

Hi Mick

It was nice to hear from you. I am descended from Easter - did you know she had a twin sister Sophia. Like you I could not find any trace of them in 1861 Census and I did see that Hannah died aged 4.

I am afraid I do not have any information about John Berkley but his middle name is very unusual.

I was named Eleanor after my grandmother. She was named Eleanor but registered as Ellen which always annoyed her. My aunt was named Kathleen Eleanor so the name does seem to run in the family.

I have searched high and low for Martin and Helena but can find no trace. I did see a St Leger Martin Gillman died in London in 1813 - I wondered if it was our Martin.

St Leger Joseph Gillman born on the I O W married Easter Johnson.

They had a son called St Leger Joseph Gillman and he married Elizabeth Taylor. They were the parents of my great grandmother Frances Mary.

We must be related through St Leger John Berkley as he was the son of John and Easter.

I have a copy of the baptism record for St Leger Joseph Gillman, baptised in a Roman Catholic Church on the Isle of Wight.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Eleanor

Hi, Eleanor,

Nice to hear from you. Are you descended directly from Hannah? I understood she died at the age of 4 in 1854. I am descended from John & Easter through their son St. Leger John Berkley (1853-1931), who was my great-grandfather. If I read the records right, John & Easter were living as common law wife and husband with his parents in 1851, and only married a few months before St. Leger John's birth. St.Leger John and his wife Ellen went on to have 15 children, of whom only 5 survived beyond infancy and childhood - including my grandmother.

Regarding John Berkley of Bristol, do you know why his middle name was Quarman? I've been unable to trace his birth details, what I know is from the Census returns. Also, I've been completely unable to trace John & Easter & St. Leger John in the 1861 census, presumably their records for that part of what was then Middlesex have been lost. John eventually married again, and died in 1883 - but presumably you know all this? My grandmother told me several tales about John and his second wife.

Regarding the Gillmans - St. Leger Joseph's parents were allegedly Martin and Helena/Eleanor (were you perhaps named after her?), but I have been unable to find out very much about them,

Hope to hear again soon,

Mick Mirams

Hi,

Re my previous enquiry, I now understand that John's middle name was Quarman. Does anyone know where this name comes from? Is it to do with his parentage - maiden name of his mother, perhaps? Any details on John's parentage would be much appreciated. There is a strong possibility he was fairly closely connected with the Berkeleys of Gloucestershire and 'castle' fame.

Thanks for any info which hopefully comes my way.
