The parents were:
Ignac Jacob and Hani Lichtman.

My great-grandfather was Moritz/Moses Berkowitz, born around 1855 in Zemplen Magyar. He settled in Wilkes-Barre Pa. Did you have Berkowitz relatives there? The was a big clan of Berkowitz's from Hungary in Wilkes Barre and Scranton that settled in the late 1800's.
Mark Strauss (markes@aol.com)
Rhea BERKOWITZ Weissman b. Cleveland, Ohio Obit.

RHEA WEISSMAN, devoted wife of 58 years of the late Harold Weissman; beloved daughter of Benjamin and Esther Berkowitz (both deceased); loving mother of Barbara Sheehe (Lawrence), Sherry May (Timothy) and Douglas Weissman (Oralynn); and cherished grandmother of Michael Sheehe, Brenna Weissman and Jackie May. Passed away on Nov. 11, 2008 at her home in Scottsdale, AZ., surrounded by her family and her hopelessly spoiled cat, Missy.
Born and raised in Cleveland,Ohio; she and Harold married upon his return from WWII and together they established a family business, The Harold Supply Company, which they ran together until they moved from Beachwood, Ohio to Scottsdale in 1982.
A child of the Depression era, her needs were simple; her family and friends were her treasure. In addition to working full time at the business, she raised her family and was a devoted caretaker for Harold after his debilitating injury - and she did so with a joy that was palpable. She lit up a room like Arizona sunshine with her smile and infectious giggle and she made friends everywhere she went with her genuine outgoing personality. She played a mean game of Mah Jong and rooted passionately for the Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. She plastered red lipstick kisses on the faces of her children and grandchildren and she was never so happy as when she could feed you. "God bless you Mom, and thanks for always being there." Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 at Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale.

Published in The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio on 11/16/2008

Courtesy Obit. ONLY
Cuyahoga
Re: Berkowitz from Odessa

Stan,

I don't think we're related, but there are quite a few coincidences. The middle name of my father, Victor, was Leo - but it wasn't a family name; it came from the doctor who braved a storm in order to deliver him. My dad was born in Providence, and grew up in Middle Village, then Springfield, Mass. Half of my family did come from Odessa, but it was my mother's half (the Feinsilvers) - they had the good sense to leave the small town of Kamenets-Podolsk around 1910. Like your uncle, my father served in the Army-Air Force in WWII, and he, too, was a talented artist and illustrator - though he made his living at a company that specialized in air conditioning and ventilation. The comment you made about the brothers' estrangement hit a familiar note; my family is riddled with similar tales.

I don't know any Bercovicis, but I did run into a woman named Barbara Berkowitz a few years ago, and she told me her family's original name back in Rumania was Bercu, but when they came here, they changed it to Berkowitz, "because it sounded more American." Not kidding.

Stan Berkowitz
Westlake Village, CA

Berkowitz from Odessa

My grandfather, Joseph Berkowitz came from Odessa, somewhere around 1900. He married my grandmother (Sarabella) and they had two sons, Leon and Ernest. Initially they lived in Brooklyn, then Bronx. I recall my father, Leon, often saying that the last name was originally Bercovici.
Ernest served in the Army Air Corps in WWII. He was a talented artist and illustrator and an avid archer (bow and arrow). Leon worked for the gov't in Washington DC during that time. Leon and Ernest were estranged
Joseph Berkowitz died in 1946. His wife in about 1952,3,4?
I have not heard from my uncle, Ernest since then. Leon died in 1997. His wife Raynor (my mother) died in 1999.
I'm trying to find out if I have cousins out there whom I've never met.

Victoria,

Rueven Paikowsky, the son of Batya Berkowitz
and Shmuel Paikowsky moved to Israel right after
WW2. He was on Cyprus after WW2 and his oldest
son was born in Isreal in 1948.

At this time, I do not know the names of
Batya Berkowitz's parents, but I hope to
find out in the next few months.

I hope this has helped.

Good Luck in your search.

David Annenberg

Hi, my great-grandfather and grandfather came from Latvia from a town/district Pokroi to South Africa in early 1900's.

I am unable to find such a place. Can anyone help?
My grandfather Berkowitz was buried on a farm in the then Rhodesia. His gravestone clearly says Isaac Berkowitz from Latvia. He died in 1944 and was born in 1876.

I am still trying to trace the grave of my great-grandfather, who died in South Africa, as I do not know his name. It could have been Jankel, Joseph or Nathan.

Did Jewish fathers usually name their eldest son after their own fathers?

Ada

I think maybe Avraham or Tziporah, I'm not sure about his brother or any other siblings, What I have been told though is that he had a wife and children who died in the holocaust and so did his parents. I believe his brother survived. Anyway later on he married my grandmother Yehudith Voltz, or wotlz or wolf, any one of those are pronunciation options., and they had two kids, Avraham and Tziporah, who were named after... I hope this helps.

Hi Stan,
Did Joseph have any sisters? I'm helping a friend look for her relatives. Her great grandparents were Celia Berkowitz b. in Ukraine, dates unknown at this point, who married Isaac Senderowitz (changed to Sanders), also born in Ukraine and no birth date known. Their son was Samuel Sanders, born Oct. 1906 in Brooklyn. I don't know if Celia and Isaac had any other children or much other info at this point. I'm trying to find them in the census but haven't had much luck yet.

Let me know if you think she might be connected to your Berkowitz's.
Thank you.
I don't know if anyone has responded...but the Morris Berkowitz line in this thread lived in NYC/Brooklyn and had arrived from Uzghorod, AUS-HUN Empire by c.1880's-1890. Herman Berkowitz, his son, died young in his 20's c.1898 NYC and has many descendants from his 3 children. Do not know of any other siblings/cousins to Herman so far. Herman was a shoe buyer and married Gussie Blau whose mother was Sarah Cohen of AUS-HUN near Budapest.

Looking for these gentlemen and any info about the maternal grandfather of Jack E. and Stanley Berkowitz named Max Engel. Martin would be Max's son-in-law. Martin's wife was Ruth Engel. They were/are cousins to my father's family, Fischer, also from NY City. Max and my great-grand mother, Sitta Engel Fischer, were siblings, so Jack E. adn Stanley would have been her great-nephews. My father, Alfred Fischer, and my uncle, Norman Fischer, always talked about visiting and playing with Jack and Stanley. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
