Apparently no connection. Our Berkowitz/Greenberg was resident in Philadelphia from 1890s marriage on till 40s(?).
Thanks for the response.

(I was only able to see 1 line of your message.)
The family names listed were the married names for sisters of my Grandfather, Nate Berkowitz. Zuckerman and Ungerlander were in New York. The other two in Philadelphia as was his brother Samuel Berkowitz. My grandfather lived in Milwaukee, Sheboygan, TerreHaute and finally, Mattoon, Illinois after 1906.

It looks like we are not related in the obvious way. My grandfather was from Hungary and the area called Galszecs in Zemplen (a kind of county) seems to have been infested with Berkowitz's. The Zuckerman Imentioned was his sister's married name.

If this conjunction of family names rings a bell, we are undoubtedly related. Zuckermans and Ungerlanders were in NYC, the others were in Philadelphia, in period 1900- thirties. My branch of Berkowitz went to the midwest.
Berkowitz Family from Riga, Latvia

I am looking for detail of Latvian Berkowitz/Berkowitsch. My understanding is that all Riga Berkowitz's started with Peysack from the 18th century. Son(?) was Hirsch, Grandson Hatzkel (Jesekiil), Great Grandson Schender. At this stage the family moved from Sloka to Riga. Schender's son was Mordukh (Mark — My Great Grandfather), who moved to Witbank, South Africa. Mordukh's oldest daughter was my Grandmother Fanny, who married Solomon Esakov and moved to Johannesburg. I in turn moved to Atlanta USA.

There was a cousin, Pearl who married Dave Ostroff who lived in Youngstown. My father told me that he had a produce business in Youngstown or thereabouts and also was in the srap metal business. Pearl passed on recently, but her kids are still alive and I talk to some of them.

Hi Marcia,

Where in Ohio did your Berkowitz family live? My Berkowitz family immigrated from Hungary (Carpathian mountain region) in the late 1920s (at least my dad circa 1928 or so). This part of Hungary later became Czechloslovakia and then it became the Ukraine I'm sure my dad's father (Jacob--Jewish name Yahooda (spelling?) came to America (Cleveland, OH) before that but probably after 1910. My dad Ben listed on his immigration papers that he was married to Esther in Cleveland and was coming here to join her, but I think that Esther Berkowitz was in fact not his wife but a relative. Do you have a Cleveland address where your family lived? Did they live there in the 1930s or 1940s? When did they move to New Jersey? When was Esther born?

Jack Berkowitz
jackbe1@earthlink.net

I emailed my memoir to you.
My great-grandfather was Moshe Dov Berkovits from Volova, about 5km west of Humenne. His father was Samuel (Shmeul ben Moshe) from Topolovka, about 10km north of Humenne. I believe the family was originally from Humenne. There may be a relationship to the Moshe in your family. As for Avroham, my great grandfather's second son was named Avroham which became Edward when the family moved to Wilkes-Barre.

My Berkowitz ancestors also came from the area around Humenne. We have many common names in my tree, including Moshe and Avroham. My great-great grandfather Samuel Berkovits immigrated to Wilkes-Barre PA in the 1870's. His father Moshe was also from Humenne. Have you been able to find any earlier information on your family. I created a memoir on a recent trip to Humenne to research the family. If anyone is interested, I can email a copy.

I'm posting a picture from a formal dinner for Jacob Berkowitz probably born around 1914 and whose father may be Dave. Many of my extended family from Iasi Romania are labeled in it. I don't know if the Berkowitz's are friends or family. My family surnames in this picture include Klepper, Haimowitz, Lobel and Siegel. I have seen mention of Wolkowitz and Berkowitz on this message board. I have seen Wolkowitz possibly tied with Schindelman or Schendelman which is also related. Any connections I could find would be great!

I've been able to find slightly more information about the family... doesn't appear that mine are related to yours, at least not directly.

I was able to find out that Samuel's father's name was Moshe (or Moshe Cohen?) and Leah's father's name was Aaron. Moshe may have been born in Russia (according to the 1930 census) and later moved to Romania. Both of Leah's parents are listed on the census as being born in "Austria-Vienna", and spoke Polish, but she was born in Romania.

I know the census information is often unreliable, so who knows?

I've got some Berkowitz ancestors from Iasi, Romania that I am trying to find information on. Berkowitz (b. 1888 - d.1977, died in Hartford, CT)
Abraham Berkowitz (b. 1891 ) owned Songo Shoe company in Portland, ME
Jacob "Jack" Berkowitz (b. 1893 )
Frida R.
Re: Berkowitz, Anna - from Russia

Noah, I would LOVE to hear whatever information you do have. I did a little digging online and found a tombstone for Louis Devine in Denver (link below) .... I can only assume it is him. I found Anna Devine's tombstone in Sioux City, IA. Now, I am unsure of the sources of all the information I do have. I did, however, get in contact with a couple of new relatives through e-mail and Geni.com. Anna may be the daughter of Pesach and Basha Bercovich, though Pesach was married to a woman named Ruth, as well? The other children are: David, Miriam, Sachme, Label, Gershon, Razel, & Michla. I have been told there are Israeli ties in there somewhere, and ties to the Holocaust. My grandmother Elaine passed away in 1997, when I was 8 or 9, so I didn't get to know her or ask about our family tree.

I would love to talk with you more. My e-mail is vetranbabe@gmail.com. :)

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=de...;

Hi Sarah, Would you happen to know where Lious Devine's tombstone is located? I was thinking about going to visit. You have more information then I do. Is your Grandmother Elaine still alive? Do you follow Jewish Traditions? Did you hear anything about Anna before she made it to America? My Grandmother Robin shared some information with me about Anna before she came to America just a few weeks ago. That's what got me interested in finding out more about my great great grandparents. I knew we had Jewish blood in our family, but I didn't know anything else till just a few weeks ago.

Hi Noah, I am Sarah Sherman, granddaughter of Elaine Devine, great-granddaughter of Anna and Louis Devine. I believe I got the information about Louis moving to Denver from Cousin Phyllis Freid, but I can't remember where exactly she falls on my tree. I contacted the hospital where he died and got his death certificate, I believe. That is really the only information I have because, it sounds like, my dad and his mother, etc, were told he had a drinking problem and left the family. This same family member told me Louis had a brother named Ed Devin in Chicago, I found he was married to a Tillie Blumenthal, they had a son named Jerome Devin.

Hi,

Glad this isn't too old! I have a photograph of the confirmation reception for Jacob Berkowitz. My grandmother labeled herself and most of her first cousins so I'm guessing we are related to Jacob but I can't fit him in my tree. Our surnames include Klepper, Siegel, Haimowitz, Yancolowitz, Lobel, Selig, Schindelman/Schendelman/Scheindelman, Weiss and Lobel. I'm guessing that Jacob's mother was Klepper, Weiss or Selig. I've found a Fany Klapper married Sam Berkowitz in 1910. Can you be related somehow? I'd love to connect the dots and label more people in the picture.

Thanks, Judi
