Carol -- Feels like it has been forever since I looked at this. I was at one time in touch with Rita Foster (Sarah's grand-daughter), but we had several unfortunate turns in our family that needed tending, and so I am remiss at keeping up. At any rate, I would love to learn more about these Berney's. I had the good luck to visit Ireland last summer, but was with a group from church, and was not free to travel on my own. The closest we got to Curraduff was Wicklow, then back up to Dublin and across to Galway. Are you in Ireland?

It's difficult to keep up with this site -- do you have a personal email you wouldn't mind passing along to me?

Thank you Carol!

Re: Berney's from Ireland

My Great Great Grandfather was William Berney, born in Curraduff, Co Wexford in about 1807. He emigrated to Canada and was shown in the 1851/2 Census as being married to an Abigail Wright. They had a number of children including Thomas Berney, who married a Rebecca Adelaide Rowsome. Their son was Arthur Manliff Berney - my Grandfather who came to England in 1915 and married an English lady. After returning to Canada / USA, they returned to England in 1922. William's will showed his nephew (James in the photo) as his executor, i.e. his brother's son. There were a number of Berneys who emigrated to Canada during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - it is probable that they are related.

I have not checked this posting in quite some time. About the link -- I had found that same page a couple of years ago. It describes my grandmother's brother closely -- he was the oldest son of John, and from also from Curraduff. I thought that the James Berney in the article would have been her brother, but one of my aunts knew her "Uncle Jim" and felt that the image of the man on that page was too old and not her uncle. Strange coincidence, though. What else do you know about this James Berney, or your great, great grandfather? (My grandmother also had a brother, William, who is buried in Canada.)

I am looking for any information on the family of Harry & Esther Berney. Harry (b. 1878) & Ester (b. 1880) were born in Russia. They had at least eight children: Joseph, Leo, Paul, Alfred, Martin, Mildred, Bernard, Rebecca. The children were born in Colorado & New York, between the years of 1902 & 1917. Leo married a Jessie. Joseph married a Rhoda. I believe that Joseph & Rhoda had two daughters; Jeanne (b. 192?) & Leonora (b. 192?).
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
This family may have also spelled their name 'Burney'.

Thank you
Susan

My great great great grandmother Anne Berney and her twin sister Margaret Berney were from the Catholic Parish of Ferns in County Wexford Ireland. Their parents were Patrick and Margaret Berney farmers who appear in Griffiths Valuation in Ballymore Kilbride (as Patrick Berny). Margaret and Anne arrived in Sydney NSW 14 August 1840 the women were aged 23 years. Their ship "Lady Clarke" departed Plymouth 20 April 1840 with bounty migrants for NSW. They were single women given a certificate of good character by Joseph Kidd, Raheen.

Anne Berney in Parramatta NSW 14 May 1846 married Robert McJannett and they had one child John Joseph McJannett and lived in Yass. Anne McJannett died at Yass NSW in 1882.

Margaret Berney in Sydney NSW 8 January 1848 married William Shannon and two daughters survived her Ann and Mary.
Margaret Shannon died in Bathurst in 1861.

I am interested in the Berney family of Ferns, Wexford, Ireland. Does any person have the history of this family in Ireland in the nineteenth century?

Re: Elizabeth Berney RI

I just started to trace my grandmothers roots. My Grandmother was Agnes Marie Boyle(maiden name), her mother was Agnes C. Devine ( 1 of 11 so I'm told), her mother was Elizabeth A. Berney ( married 02 May 1884,died 13 apr 1922). This is where I get stuck. I know the records indicate she died at the age of 57 which would make her birth year about 1865. At this point I am looking to find her parents. I hope this helps you a bit, If you have any inofrmation for me that would be appreciated. Oh, also I should mention, I have a photo of Elizabeth and George - on the back are their names with Berney crossed off and replaced with "Birnie" (I wish i could read the spelling underneath). I hope we can help each other.

In response to Lisa. My father is the son of Sarah Berney, who was the daughter of John and Annie Brownrigg from Curraduff Ireland. My father's name is Robert Joseph Foster and he moved to Australia when he was 27 years old. He married Grace Clements from Clermont in Queensland and they still live in Queensland and have six children. I am the second eldest. My grandmother Sarah Berney was first married to Samuel John White and later to Joseph Foster.
She died in 1964 and is buried at Killrush in Ireland.
My father had mentioned that one of his mother's sisters may still be living so was very interested to hear about his aunt Susanna Bell and would love to hear some more details.

Berney's from Ireland

Thought maybe some of this info would be helpful:

My Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother were John and Annie Brownrigg Berney, from Curraduff, Ferns, Ireland. They had 11 children, George, William, May, Mary Anne, John, Sarah, Jane, Lillian, Eileen, Susanna, and James. Of these 11, the ones I know came to Canada were William, John, Lillian, Eileen, Susanna and James. James returned to Curraduff to keep the family farm in the Berney name. Most of these 6 lived in or around Ottawa, and are now deceased. Susanna is my grandmother, married John Bell from Ottawa, and moved to Massena, NY. She is still living, at this date is 102.I don't believe William ever married, and is buried in Cornwall, Ontario next to where my grandmother will be buried, who will be next to my grandfather, John Bell. Would love to hear from anyone who believes they are kin!

The Berney Name

Hi, my name is Michelle Berney. My g.g.grandfather (Paul Ernest Berney)with his wife (Marie Amelie Rochat)and his 4 kids came over to America in 1878 from the Vallee' de Joux in the state of Vaud, Switzerland and settled in Knoxville, TN. In 1880, my great-grandfather (Alfred Eugene Berney,Sr.) was born. My g.g.grandparents subsequently had 4 more children for a total of 9 kids - 5 boys and 4 girls. My grandfather (Alfred Eugene Berney, Jr.) was our family historian and has gathered much information throughout his trips to Switzerland along with other swiss cousin names that also migrated to Tennessee. My father now has this information in his possession as my grandfather has passed away 2 years ago. If I can be of any help, please contact me at Shellycake66@aol.com.
We have Berney genealogy back to 1492.
Michelle
