Franz Anton Bernhardt

I am Paul Frederick Bernhardt great great grandson of Franz Anton Bernhardt, an architech from Saxony (probably Berlin.)
He was born in 1782 and migrated to England at the age of 50 and married Ann Duncan Pritchard and stared our family line. I do not have any information about Franz life in Saxony except that he was an eminent architech and was employed in the Palaces in Berlin. I am interested to know about his family and decendants in Saxony and migration of those descendants to other countries.

Searching for missing brothers - Albert and Dennis Bernhardt

My brother died last month and in his papers we found documents and a poem indicating that we had another brother. When we questioned the family, they all admitted that he did exist. When we searched for a birth certificate, we found one for a younger brother, Dennis David Bernhardt born 2-23-44. The older brother is Albert (Butch) James Bernhardt born in 1941. There is no birth certificate for him in the state of Wisconsin. Our mother was Natalie Frieda Bernhardt. Any information would be appreciated............Carol Stiff in Milton, WI

From what I've seen here, this branch of the family has always used the Barnhart spelling, ever since the subject of this thread arrived in 1750 on the ship "Royal Union" and swore allegiance to the king...

I wish I could help you, I kind of got lucky and found an emma m barnhart that married amos a dye, and was able to work backwards from there using other people's diligent time/effort (THANKS!).

You might try both her maiden/married names in your search, and use quoted strings in your google search to limit results. I used "emma may barnhart" "amos d" to find mine. Sometimes they will be listed with middle names, sometimes just middle initials.

Hope this helped a little...

--Ken
My grandmother was Emma Anna Bernhardt - the last of 10
children born to Christine Bernhardt - never knew my
great grandfather's name. They lived in Atlanta, Georgia
on PeachTree Street (this I remember from my Grandmother.
They eventually made it up to Chicago, IL and lived there
with my Grandparents. My mother, Vera C (Geiger) Kaehler
was born in a house on 63rd Street in Chicago. I really
don't know how they arrived in this country or how. My
grandmother (Emma) was born on 10-20-1885. If you have
any info - it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey cousins!

My great-Gramma was Emma Mae Barnhart, her parents were Mathias Barnhart (b. 18 Jan 1837) and Anna Mariah RUDELL. She settled in Union City (border town...Indiana/Ohio).

Our common ancestor who came over on the Royal Union is recorded as being from "Falkensteiner Wittgenstein, Germany". There is a city Falkenstein on the southeast side of Germany, and a county Wittgenstein in northwest Germany. Any idea where exactly he came from?

--Ken
Hienrich Althof born in Ehringshausen is one of seven children of Jacob Althof born we think in Wetzlar, Hesse in 1777. He Married Catherina Freund from Dilheim Hesse, in an Evengelical church in Ehringshausen. That church has the registeration of the mother and father and their seven children (2 daughters and 5 sons) Catherina Freund and her seven children who were each married in and around Ehringshausen, emigrated in groups to the US. 1851,1852,1853. The entire family eventually made it the Erie Pennsylvania and are buried in the Erie Pa cemetry.
The 7 siblings are 1)Heinrich Althof=Anna Elisabeth Margareth Schmidt, 2)Wilhelm (William) Althof=Elizabeth ?, 3)Johannes Peter Althof=Elisabetha Ackermann, 4)Johann John Althof=Eleonora Hagenbach, 5)Wilhelmina Maria (Minnie) Althof=Johann Christoph Berhardt,6)Katharina Althof=Carl Diesterdick, 7)Jacob Heinrich (Benjamin?)Althof=Gertrude Druschel. They were all married in Ehringshausen, I think.
Henry Althof 24 Jan 1846 left with his parents at age 5-6 to the US. He married Georginna (Sarah) Nolte in Erie Pa in 1874. She was ABT 1874 in Edamissen/outskirts of Hanover.
Henry=Sarah (Nolte) Althof had 8 children. My grandfather 1)Edward William Walter Althof=Emma Cardine Benze, 2)Anna Emilie Althof (d 5yo), 3),Ross Elizabeth Althof d.11 yo), 4)Emma Lousia Althof d. 10 days old), 5)Harry August (Harry) Althof=Catherine Rose Knable, 6)Carl Althof d 3 d old, 7)George Theodore Althof=Nettie C. Weber, 8)Otto (Arthur) Louis Althof
I am a direct decendant of Heinrich (Henry)Althof, Henry Althof,Edward William W.Althof, Rev. Theodore Henry Althof,Sr.=Loretta Grace Sutter, me-James E. Althof, and my 2 children Christopher James Althof and Caroline Elizabeth Althof.
My mother and father are deceased. I have two living brothers (eldest) Theodore Henry Althof,Jr. and (youngest)Timothy David Althof.
I need information on the Hessen, Wetzlar end of the family. All of Jacob's children were married in Ehringshausen, so those families are unknown. I would love to know where did Jocob Althof come from and who were his parents. He was a blacksmith. His son must have been one; Heinrick founded The Ornamental Iron Works in Erie Pa. He apprenticed his son Henry who named the business Henry Althof and Sons. These sons were Henry A., Edward W., Arthur L., and George T.,who took over and trippled the company size. (History of Erie County pp 1008-1010)

I am researching the family of my GGGgrandmother (Sophia Bernhardt) and I know she had a little brother named Gustav who was born around 1847 in Freudenstadt. My GGGgrandmother died in Philadelphia which is not too far from Reading. Therefore, if your Gustave got married later in life, this maybe the same person. If you think so, let me know and I will try to give you the information I have.

Warm regards,
Danielle

Jacob and Auguste Bernhardt in Wisconsin circa 1860s

I am looking for information on Jacob Bernhardt (or Barnhardt) and his wife Auguste Wachter whose son, John Friedrich William (born November 8th, 1864) was baptized December 18, 1864 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church south of Lomira, Dodge County, Wisconsin. Does anyone recognize these names and know what happened to this family? There is a small possibility that they ended up in Norfolk, Nebraska, around 1866.

I have located Jacob (17 Jan 1836 - 22 Apr 1907) and Auguste Wachter (1836 - 1915) Bernhard in the Pierce County, Nebraska census records from 1870 to 1900, and found records of their burials in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, South Branch Twp., Pierce, Nebraska. Children who lived long enough to produce heirs were sons August (1866 – 1930) and Charles (1869 – 1941), and daughter Magdalena (1874 – 1963), who was married to John Reichert. Does anyone recognize these names? My main interest is finding out who Auguste Wachter’s parents were.

Margaret Lamb Bernhardt, age 91,daughter of , Frank Myron and Margaret Phillips Lamb.
Margaret Lamb Bernhardt
Margaret Lamb Bernhardt, age 91,
of Edinboro, died after a period of failing health on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Edinboro Manor where she had resided for almost two years. Born on October 8, 1916 in Erie, she was a daughter of the late Frank Myron and Margaret Phillips Lamb. She married Fredrick J. Bernhardt on January 3, 1939 and he preceded her in death in September 1984. Mrs. Bernhardt lived in Edinboro until 1976 and then in Tucson, Ariz. and Tampa, Fla. for many years until 2005 when she moved back to live with her son and daughter-in-law in Albion. She was always proud to be a mother and housewife and felt blessed to live the life of a "farmer's wife". A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she loved her family and loved serving her Lord. As a faithful member of McLane Baptist Church, she served as Vacation Bible School director for many years, was a Sunday School teacher and Youth Group leader, was active in the Ladies Missionary Society, and she knew the importance of attending the Wednesday night Prayer Meetings. As a housewife, she was always busy at perfecting her skills at cooking, baking, and making crafts. Many people over the years have enjoyed her pies and her knitted and crocheted items. She liked to travel with her husband and together they had visited 48 states. At the age of 71, she had the opportunity to hike at the Grand Canyon. In addition to her husband, Fredrick J. Bernhardt, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Nora and Dorothy, and four brothers, Frank, Richard, Ralph, and William. Family members that survive include a daughter, Judith Kloss of Erie; two sons, David Bernhardt and his wife Bonnie of Edinboro, and Richard Bernhardt and his wife Nancy of Albion; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Roach of Erie; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 306 Erie Street, Edinboro on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9p.m. Funeral services will be there on Saturday at 11:00a.m. officiated by Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor of Fairview Bible Church. Interment will follow at McLane Cemetery.

McLane Baptist Church, "
Rev. Michael Bryant,

Hi Claudia,
We also came in the late 1840's but we settled in Buffalo. You may know already that many Germans (the more liberal ones) came to the US in 1848-1849 because of the revolution in Germany. The people wanted a more democratic government and the movement was put down.
I'm actually really sorry we're not related. It would be nice to find a new relative. Do you know where your family came from in Germany?
Ellie
My e-mail address is ellenp@roadrunner.com

My grandmother, Magdalena Bernhardt came to the U.S. around 1913 and came to St. Louis, MO to work as a maid for Augustus Busch (Anheuser-Busch). Mr. Busch taught her English in the evening when her work was finished. My grandmother had seven sisters. They were all born in Alsace Lorraine. Their parents were peasant farmers. To date, I have only found information regarding one of the sisters. Their mother's name was Anna. My grandmother came over by ship when she was 16 years old by herself. The idea was to save money to send to the next oldest sister to join her in America. The second sister came over, but the others decided not to leave home. My mother, father and only sister died in the last four years, so I have no one to ask for information. I'm slowly but surely getting some information. If anyone can provide any kind of information, I would be thrilled.

I'm assuming you have tried Ellis Island files and Dave Dreyer's list?
