I am trying to locate relatives of US Army Air Forces 1st. Lt. Eugene L. Bernstein of Brooklyn, New York. 1st Lt. Bernstein was reported missing in action while serving as a B-24 bomber navigator during World War II. He was attached to the 373rd Bomb Squadron, 308th Bomb Group, 14th Air Force. The B-24 was flying from Yangkai, China to Chabua, India on a resupply mission when it disappeared on May 25, 1944. From what I have learned, Lt. Bernstein was born in New York around 1921. At the time of his enlistment (March 19, 1942), his residence was King's County, New York, he was single, and he had four years of high school education. When he joined, the Army serial number he was assigned was 12053203. Later, when he was commissioned as an officer, his serial number became O-674110. The Missing Aircrew Report (MACR) filed for the loss of his aircraft listed his next of kin as his uncle, Dr. Irving Korowitz, 8801 Shore Road, Brooklyn, New York. On October 26, 2008, independent investigator Clayton Kuhles located the wreckage of Lt. Bernstein's aircraft on a mountainside in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, and he reported his discovery to the Defense Department, which he hopes will send a recovery team soon to the crash site.
