Thanks for your note.. I don't have a lot on the Douthwaite Family other than what has surfaced when researching the Shepherds. I do know that they built the Hall originally, and apparently had one or two revisions. I read an article yrs ago that descriped the construction and changes made. Done by an architech or engener.
I have researched several of the local parish BMD's ie Lastingham, Kirbymoorside, Kirkdale and some of Rosedale. Have only occasionally come across the Douthwaite family name. So it does suggest they were a small in number family.
I had also seen a land ownership record for the area perhaps in the 16 or 17 century. There were about 5 majoy landowners. Do not believe the Douthwaite's were among them. I have never researched the roots of the Douthwaite name, but that might give some clue to the family.

No Shepherd I've researched married into the family or even an extended family. I have always been curious about the name. The museum in Hutton le Hole may have some records. They are fairly "user friendly" but can't say wheather they could assist you.
I could pass on to you any info I have have come across on the Douthwaites if you wish...
Hal

Hi - I'm interested in Douthwaite Hall because my ancestors were Douthwaites who lived in the area - the earliest ones I know of are recorded in Rosedale East. I'm wondering which came first, the family or the dale, and whether the family worked at the house in Douthwaite Dale and so were named after it - I understand that sort of thing used to happen - or perhaps there was some other link between the Douthwaites and the Shepherds.

The Shepherd History at Dauthwaite goes back to the 1500 to 1886 when the last Shepherd died. Email me at hal005@hotmail.com for more into. I am a decendant of this family and have a lot of names connected to Dauthwaite. But also would be interest about the Hall.
Hal

Your John Joseph Beriman came to Australia in 1849 followed by his brothers Joseph Abraham & Andrew Berriman. Do you know anything about their sister Elizabeth Uren Berriman and husband Alexander Stevens who we believe came to Australia about the same time but can't find out anything about them.
I have quite a bit of detail of our line Joseph Abraham B. and are happy to share and can be contacted direct by email janvince@iinet.net.au

I'm interested in the berriman's, my connection is John Berriman and Sarah Thomas nee Rogers. Their fifth child James Henry Berriman moved to Flint Michigan in 1920, his wife Hannah following 1921 anlong with son Ernest and daughter Hannah. Hannah married Claude Blewett, in England before going to Michigan. I was wondering if you had any details of this family in Michigan, they may have stayed in Flint, but unsure.

Hi Susan, I'm happy to see that I have lots of cousins in Australia-they seem to be in short supply here in the USA.
You are a descendant of Andrew Berriman and Martha Ann Encel Kelsey who were married 27 April 1861 in Holy Trinity Church in Sydney. Andrew died 18 May 1904 in Moruya NSW. Their children were:
William Berriman born in Mogo.
Charles Henry Berriman-married to Sarah Goodin in Glenduart.
Emma Jane Berriman-married to William Burke.
I have children listed for Charles and Sarah and for Emma and William Burke but no other information for William Berriman.
Let me know what information I can help you with.
You can contact me at: kernow@prodigy.net
Kind regards,
John Berriman

He got a job as an iron miner in Morristown, New Jersey. He met Catherine Anthony who was from St. Ives, Cornwall in 1872. They got married and started a family. They all moved to Virden, IL except for Harriett who got married to a man with the last name Taylor and stayed in Morristown.
John Berriman
John,
Sorry it has taken it so long to respond. Found your extended family tree interesting. I enjoyed the photo posted of one of the Job Berriman's it reminded me of someone in my family. We are third cousins, I believe we both share the same great-great -grandfather. I am interested in details of that Job Berriman's transition from Cornwall to New Jersey to Illinois. Also any details about the individuals.

Thank you

Her family is from St Ives

Her father was John Paynter, and his parents were John Paynter (b.1872?) and Emma Berriman.(b.1876?)

Her mother was Eva May Beckerleg.(b.1900?). I believe her parents were Samuel and Mary.

My grandmother's siblings are Eva (still alive and in Bournemouth I believe), Jack, Joan, Mary, Patricia.

I have seen many variations on the spelling such as Thurzia, Thersa, etc etc.
This woman is the mother of my grandmother. My grandmother told me a couple of years before she died, that her mothers maiden name was Berriman, and that her family came from Penzance, Cornwall, England.
I have seen a picture of her, and will upload a scanned copy when I manage to get a copy from my aunty.
Ive been researching this for a number of years, and looking at this thread, i see alot of familiar names, in terms of research into the Berriman's in Australia
Regard

Thank you for responding. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond back. I do not have much information on my adoption or much information about this brother. We are talking about the USA and I do know that John (my brother) was born in Kentucky. I do not know where in Kentucky though. I have a piece of paper hand written by my adopted mother that has Johns real name down as John Berriman. But lists many other names on the paper as well. Those are the names I already gave you. I know it is a long shot, but when I pulled up Berrimans on the computer and came across yours I thought I would take a chance. Have a great day! Nina

I was adopted and I am looking for some information on my birth family and the name John Berriman has come up in my searching. I believe John Berriman may be the name of my half brothers father. Some other names that seem to be connected with my brother are Cuirell, Cairell, Cury Odee Swims. The spellings may not be correct. The paper I have is hard to read. If you have any information that may be helpful to me please reply. Thank you!
Nina
