Linda,
I looked at some other marriages in 1913 and M J Meadows was the clerk of county court of Raleigh Co. W Va. Those marriages also state M J Meadows was a "relative". I think it is just a term on how the certificates were written up.
Karen

Perhaps these are related as the towns are next door. Interest sparked by clipping at the Goodrich Mem Library, Newport, Vt. Not my ancestors........ but maybe of interest to someone.
Express & Standard, Tuesday Morning, Feb. 15, 1881

Considerable talk has been indulged in the past week or two occasioned by rather hard treatment towards a poor woman with three children who has fallen among us. It appears that she is the widow of one “Ed” Berry who died in the neighboring town of Salem last fall. This Berry was a soldier of the rebellion and had made an application for a pension which has not yet been granted. He was living in an old house near Freemen Blake’s the rent of which had been given him. He had some some [sic] sort of a trade at which he worked but was very poor. At his burial he had hardly rags enough to cover his nakedness and his coffin was a roughly painted board box.
After his decease the widow was induced by the authorities to go into Canada where she stayed a few weeks only; returning to Salem she applied for help but was turned off. She came to Newport and lived with Albert Kittridge two or three weeks, being obliged to work out of doors drawing logs to the steam mill. Her subsequent return to this village, being sent to Richford and back, bandied from here to Derby and then back here again would make a long story. During the extreme cold weather of week before last she was taken from the street by one of our merchants where she was likely to freeze, and warmed and he wants supplied for the time. As the authorities were bound not to provide for her, a few of the citizens contributed enough money to pay for her keeping a few days and she has since been provided for. It would appear that somebody was at fault in this case. We are aware that overseers are liable to be imposed upon, that there are a class of persons in the world who have no higher ambition than to palm themselves off upon the authorities as town charges. But we can see no reason why this is not as strong a case as can be devised under the law; and if the law does not hit this case then it is faulty. For a woman with three small children, the oldest not over twelve years of age, with nothing to eat and clothes insufficient for protection and nothing to procure any with, to be turned out of doors in the extreme of winter among comparative strangers is hard indeed.

My 5th GGrandfather Joseph Berry b.1745 Goochland Co VA had a daughter named Rachel Berry b.1782 possibly in Goochland Co VA but Joseph & Elizabeth Berry could have moved before she was born to another county in VA.

Rachel had brothers Little Berry 1776, Jessey (mine)1777 and Hyram 1779.

There maybe other siblings but if so, I don't have their names.

I'm guessing that their mother was born Elizabeth Little because 1st born son was named Little Berry. That could be wrong though.

I've recently put together another website JUST about my Berry genealogy. It's still incomplete, but there's some good info on there about John Berry and his descendants. You can find the new Berry website at http://www.theberrygenealogy.com.

Hello! I don't know if this will "plug" in with your line, but I can trace back to a FIELDER BERRY b1790 in/near Charles County, MD. Fielder served during the War of 1812 and then he moved to Wheeling, WV area where my line of his direct descendants stayed until my mother's generation. I do not know Fielder's parents/siblings names but on the 1820 census of MD, he is listed a few lines down from a GEORGE BERRY. He was in VA (now WV) by 1830. I now his wife's name was ELIZABETH. He volunteered for the War of 1812 in Charles County, MD and always stated he was born in MD, so probably in Charles. Do any of these match up with anyone? Thank you!

Hello! I don't know if this will "plug" in with your line, but I can trace back to a FIELDER BERRY b1790 in MD. Close to VA, so may be worth a try! He volunteered for the War of 1812 in Charles County, MD so he must have been living in Charles Cnty or very close by. Do any of these match up with anyone? Thank you!

I'm the Grandson of Percy George Berry from Southampton (Art or Arthur to his friends),I believe he had a brother called John and we have a relative from England who stayed with us for a time called Matt Cowen.

He married Ruby Rose Berry who had three daughters and one son: Joanne Berry, Kim Berry, Leah Berry and Mark Berry. He was in the Royal Medical Corps before moving to Canada and helped to found the BC Paramedics, he died of a heart attack in Langley when I was quite young.

My Mother is Leah Stewart (formerly Berry) who is married to Drew Stewart and who had three children: James Stewart, Karlee Stewart and Tiffanie Stewart.

Mark Berry (now deceased) had Michael Berry, who carries on the name.

Would you like any other information? I've been trying to find out some family history myself, on the Berry side, perhaps we can exchange our information! ^_^
