Hi - I have a lot of information on the Berrys of New Jersey starting in the early 1700's. Henry, father of John who married Elizabeth Leftreau in mid 1700's. Some of John's children stayed in New Jersey and some went to Virginia. My problem is John's grandson Paul. Can't find a proof of his birth although I know he was the son of Ebenezer Berry and Catherine Mizner(sp). Anyone else researching this family? More than willing to share.
Pat

I am just now researching seriously my Berry family and think I have a problem that hopefully some of you more knowledgable listers can help with. Years ago, a Berry researcher gave me my family tree but now that I am looking for documentation or sources, I am unable to find the correct data. This is what I have
Henry Berry
William Berry m Margaret Doughtery
Reuben Berry b. 1735 d. 1829 Va m Margaret Martin
William Berry b. 1776-1780 Ky d. 1839 Mo m. Sarah Fugate
Vincent Fugate Berry b. 1818 Ky Hopkins or Madison Co Ky d. 1895 Mo m 1 Missouri Williams 2. Lucinda White
I do hope someone can check their lineage and tell me where I am off as I can not find that William had a son Reuben. I have most of Vincents children documented.
Do hope I hear from someone as I am extremely frustrated.
Barbara in Ok

Isaac Berry 1760-1820 Irish? Montgomery County Virginia

Looking for this man. He's suppose to be from Ireland, but can't find any proof of this, except what was written in the Lawrence County Kentucky Berry Book by Dr. A?.

He was married to we think Jane Hale. He most likely arrived from wherever 1775-80. Can't find him on any ship record, the Virginia Census of 1790 and 1800 were destroyed by the British... darn war! I do find him on the 1795 tax record for Mongomery County Virginia.

It is believed his children were born in Montgomery County Virginia. The only problem I have with that is Montgomery County wasn't formed until 1792 from Fincastle County and I think Botetourt County.

Children could be
Elizabeth 1780 Virginia
Rebecca 1782 Virginia
ISAAC JR. 1789 Virginia married Nancy Kelly or Kelley
John 1791 Virginia
Jubal 1795 Virginia
Bathsheba 1802 Virginia

I believe he died in 1820ish in Floyd County Kentucky. His son, Isaac Jr. lived in Floyd county as well.

I'm trying to document everything and have lost some info. Really could use some help.

My line:
Isaac / Jane Hale
Isaac Jr. / Nancy Kelly or Kelley
William M / Elizabeth Burton
James M / Tabitha Moore Thompson
*William M / Nancy Nana Nannie Gibson
Eugene / Alberta Potenza (OHIO)(Barry)
Patrick / Still living Crabtree (OHIO)(Barry)ds

*William M changed the spelling of his last name to Barry to disassociate himself from his family. He was a staunch Union Man and when his own siblings and cousins crossed the picket line in the mines, he got disgusted with the whole lot. He left his wife, abandoned his son, my grandfather, and went to Detroit Michigan. He did father another son and daughter along the way.

I am searching for information on Samantha Caroline Berry and Roland Teague Morgan. They were born in the 1860's in Alabama and had 7 children. Zora Jane, Lillie Salome, Mahazy Frances, Hattie Velma, Elma, Bertha Ella, and Edna Mae. They moved the family to Texas and settled in the Kerens area. Roland Teague had a brother named Thomas Houston and a sister named Ella. I am trying to find out who their parents were and if there were more siblings.
The only information I have for Samantha Caroline Berry is that she was born in Huntsville Alabama in 1861. I dont know if she had siblings or who here parents are

Maria Berry 1850 MI Jackson Henrietta census

Hope that someone can help me here. In the above census taken August 26, 1850 listed is Maria Berry 27 born NY, Helen 7 MI, Edgar 5 MI, William 3 MI, George 1 MI, Amos Evans 14 NY, William Fisher 23 Farmer NY. This is page 772. On page 771 I find my Great Great Grandmother, husband and son, that is Sylvanus Bryant 39 Farmer Maine, Harriet 24 NY, Henry 1 MI. We have been trying to figure out who Harriet's family is in MI, who she was with prior to her marriage to Sylvanus Bryant in 1846. We have found possibles that didn't work out, Harriet R Fisher was born ca 1826 NY. She is referred to as Rachel Harriet Fisher Bryant in a grandaughter's DAR records. On her children's marriage record here in Iowa her maiden name is listed as Fisher. Anyone that can/would be able to provide information as to Maria Berry's maiden name, the Berry that she was married to first name. There is a John Berry in Jackson Co. MI in 1840 - he has a son 20-30 as a possible marriage to this Maria. He is only a page or so away from James Fisher but haven't been able to find a marriage. We're thinking it is possible that Maria might be a daughter of James E. Fisher we have missing in the 1840 census and that daughter married this Berry, explaining William Fisher living with her and her family. Hoping someone can help. Regards Barb Drummer

(Sallie) Emma Berry Tiffany b. 1866 - Hardy Co., W. Virginia

I have been trying to piece together the puzzle of my great-great grandmother's life.

Her name was Sallie Emma Berry (called Emma) and she was born on 24 August 1866 in Moorefield, Hardy Co., Virginia (now W. Virginia).

Her parents were James W. Berry (b. abt 1834; Hardy Co, Virginia) and Mary Virginia Houseworth (b. 15 Apr 1834; Hardy Co, Virginia; d. 7 May 1877; Martinsberg, Berkeley Co., W. Virginia).

They were married around 1861 and had 5 children:

Isaac D. (b. 1862)
William Ramer (b. 1864)
Sallie Emma (1866-1944)
John A (1868-1936)
Ward (b. 1874)

In the 1870 Census, Emma Berry is listed with her family and was living in Martinsburg, Co. Berkeley, W. Virgina. However, in the 1880 Census, Emma Berry is listed as living with her aunt and uncle - John and Mary Houseworth. John Houseworth was the brother of Mary Virginia Houseworth Berry, Emma's mother. In this Census, Emma Berry is listed as a daughter of the house.

What I'm trying to find out is what happened to her parents and siblings. I'm thinking that it was a serious illness that wiped out most of the family, but not serious enough to make the papers, as I can't find anything there. Scarlet fever? Measles?

Through cemetary records, I can confirm that Mary Virginia Houseworth Berry died on 7 May 1877. Of their children, I can only trace two of them.

John A. Berry married Emma M. Rofinot (b. 1874) around 1895 and they had one son, Eugene (b. 1896). John Berry died 25 June 1936 in Chicago.

Sallie Emma Berry married Luther Scott Tiffany on 9 July 1889 in Martinsburg, Co. Berkeley, W. Virginia. They immediately departed for Chicago, IL and lived there until their deaths.

James W. Berry (b. 1834) simply vanished. I can find no records of him anywhere. If Sallie Emma was 'adopted' by the Houseworth family, I'm wondering if James W. left to find work, as he would not be able to care for his family himself, given the times.

The three remaining children have disappeared also.

I'm very interested in solving the puzzle of this branch of my family. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Sarah Tiffany

Berry's of North Eastern Massaschusetts 1630-1900

I'd love to chat with anyone who is also researching BERRY's of north eastern MA. My Berry's lived in Suffolk Co., Essex. Co. & Middlesex Co. Thaddeus Berry is the earliest that I'm SURE is my Berry. He arrived in the early/mid 1600's. There is much chatter about my Berry's and the Berry's of William of Strawberry Bank, NH. I DO NOT believe my Thaddeus Berry is a product of William(son of Johan Berry of England)William of Strawberry Bank had a large family and much is out there on his line. I find no documentation to support him having a son named Thaddeus. I actually lean toward the theory that Thaddeus was Irish, being the much written about Thaddeous..Teague O'Barry that first lived in Boston/Lynn area: Rumney Marsh, MA. Thaddeus' son John had a son Samuel Berry b. 1699 who is often confused with Samuel b.6-25-1697(son of Thomas, john's brother)and died before 1720. The two Samuels were cousins! Anyway my Samuel married Moriah Ingalls of Lynn, MA. Their son Nathaniel b. 1736 married Susanna Esty.
I have much documentation on this family. I'd love more. A family bible would be a desirable source of information if anyone has one. If you have info to change my mind or to expand my beliefs PLEASE contact me. I'm willing to listen to anything about this Berry family. MY BERRY FAMILY!
Thanks for you help.
Karin

I am looking for descendants of the above. Mary Susan Hodge was born in KY in 1822 and married Dr. John T. Berry at the age of 13 in Livingston County, KY. For a time they lived in Uniontown, KY before moving to Camden County, MO in 1869. From there they moved to Carthage, MO. Their children were Dr. Norbourne "Norben" Courtney Berry (md a Mrs. Sue B. Green the daughter of a Payne Dixon, KY), Claude L. Berry, John J. Berry and Howell A. "Howard" Berry. Two daughters young, Belle and Rosa Berry. Dr. John T. Berry died sometime between 1892 and the 1900 Census. Mary Susan Berry died at the home of her son, Dr. Norbourne Courtney Berry in 1910...possibly Little Rock, Pulaski County, MO. Norbourne died in 1915...his wife was Sue Belle Green Hodge, nee Dixon who died in 1912. They are buried at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Howell County, MO and had daughters, Ernestine and Sue (possibly a Sudya / Sudye / Sudie); a son, Willie. Sue is to have married a Harvey C. Clark.

I came across this in my research - I have no further information but thought it might be of interest to someone.

9/29/1909 Dallas Morning News Historical Archive

Guthrie, OK Sept 18

The recent finding of the skull and bones of a bison in the Canadian River west of Shawnee at Willow Bend by Deputy Constable Bailey Hanes has brought forth an interesting story of war times from James Berry. He asserts positively that those are the remains of a bison he killed there in 1863.

Berry had been a prisoner of war and being court-martialed at Fort Smith, Ark. his life was spared by the leniency of the court, but he was ordered to leave the state. This he did, starting for Colorado through this section of the country. With him were Dock Duff and other escaped war prisoners. They secured supplies at the Shawnee Indian mission and preceded on westward. At Willow Bend they spied a huge bison standing upon the bluff. Berry shot the animal, and taking what meat they wanted, the party shoved the carcass over into the river.

The bison head measured twelve inches between the eyes and twenty inches from tip to tip. In the fishing party where the head was found were Justice of the Peace Hal Johnson and M.W. McKenzie, former Deputy Sheriff Bill Carr, Clarence Jones, Jack Harriage and Deputy Constable Bailey Hanes, all of Shawnee. The head and bones were taken to the city.
Scoth-Irish Ancestors

Looking for any information about the family of Robert (50) and Jane (47) Berry. Children included Anne (21), Robert (18), Richard (16), and James (15). They sailed on the Betty Gregg in 1768 and embarked in Charlestown, South Carolina. Their family has lived in South Carolina ever since. Aboard the same ship was a family of Murrays who also came from Northern Ireland. They were headed by a William and an Archibald Murray. Several Murray children were in the group, but no adult woman is named. This family also settled inland from Charleston and still lives in the area. John, Martha, and Mary McQuillan followed about 1772. They were siblings, and Martha married William Murray. I would be so happy to learn anything at all about these families, or any relatives still in Ireland!

Thank you!
Bettie Berry
I'm trying to find the parents of a Berry Smith, born in Ga in 1805. He is found on the 1840, 1850 and 1860 census for Jones Co Ms. Berry died after 1860 in Jones Co Ms.
While reasearching a Lewis Smith I was led to Appling Co Ga and noticed the Berry surname in the early 1800s.
I have no link for Berry Smith to the Berry surname but since it was common for given names to be that of forebearers surnames and seeing the Smith and Berry surnames in Appling Co, I thought I'd give it a shot, given the coincidences, with the theory that Berry's mother or a grand parent was a Berry.

Any information on Smith / Berry marriages in Ga or on the southern migration route from the Carolinas in this time period will be appreciated.
rgoss

BERRY family - TN > IL > Des Moines County, Iowa

Hello !
With all of the millions of BERRY's out there in the world, some one has got to know about my branch of them. I can only hope....
Here are my BERRY's :

The earliest I can place my branch is in Wilson County, Tennessee. JOHN BERRY marries ELIZABETH CAMPBELL
They have 1 child - WILLIAM C. BERRY ( my g g g grandfather) . Elizabeth dies a few years after that and John remarries a woman named ELVIRA HARRIS daughter of
SAMUEL HARRIS. John and Elvira have 10 children:

SAMUEL H. BERRY
JAMES M. BERRY
HENDERSON BERRY
TRAVIS BERRY
LYDIA JANE BERRY
SARAH ANN BERRY
JOHN P. BERRY
DAVID T. BERRY
ELVIRA RHODA BERRY
MARY OLIVIA BERRY

Here is my problem: It seems that for some reason I have not been able to find any information about my g g g grandfather WILLIAM C. BERRY. I have found a few GEDCOM files online that seem to contain more or less most of the children from John's second marriage. But there isn't ever any mention of his first marriage and his eldest son.
I have pieced together a little but most of it is guess work.

John Berry ends up in Des Moines County, Iowa where is eldest son William is already living. Would love to have knowledge of all these missing years.
In Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa
WILLLIAM C. BERRY married MARY PING (daughter of BOWLIN PING and SOPHIA BARNES of Pulaski County, Kentucky). They had several children including :

AMERICA BERRY
ADDISON LINCOLN BERRY
WILLIAM CAMPBELL BERRY who is my 2nd great grandfather

WILLIAM CAMPBELL BERRY married LAURA ROBINSON
in Des Moines County, Iowa. LAURA ROBINSON was the daughter of DAVID and MARGARET ROBINSON. David came from Ireland and was an accomplished Blacksmith in Des Moines County.

William A Berry, Ohio Volunteer Infantry - Civil War items!

I am not related to this family, nor do I have a connection to the items. I am posting this in the hopes that someone from this family reads my note in time. I would want to know if this were my family.

Someone on a very large auction website is selling items related to William A Berry - June 1864 discharge issued at Columbus, Ohio, an 1880 Pension document, 1891 pension and 1923 document related to his burial plot.

The following was listed at http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Marion/History1907/MHB.htm : WILLIAM A. BERRY, who was for many years one of the best known farmers of Green Camp township, passed out of this life April 13, 1903. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, August 4, 1837, and was a son of John F. T. and Elizabeth (Close) Berry. John F. T. Berry, who was of German descent, was born February 20, 1811, in Fairfield County, Ohio, and his wife, the mother of our subject, who was also born in the same county in 1815, was of English ancestry. Their union resulted in the birth of 10 children. After the death of the mother of our subject, Mr. Berry again married, 1849, his second wife being Mrs. Elizabeth Martin, a daughter of Daniel Reed. Mr. Berry died in Marion County in 1859. William A. Berry was reared on a farm in Marion township and obtained his education in the township schools. He was one of the first to respond to President Lincoln's first call for volunteers and enlisted on April 20, 1861. He reenlisted, June 6, 1861, in Company K. Fourth Reg., Ohio Vol. Inf., to serve three years, and gave faithful service at the battles of Rich Mountain, Romney, Winchester, Port Republic, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristol, Mine Run, and Morton's Ford, where he was wounded. His discharge was granted June 22, 1864. After the war, Mr. Berry returned to. Marion County and engaged in farming on his well-improved farm of 104 acres in Green Camp township. Mr. Berry was united in marriage February 16, 1865, with Nancy A. Snyder, who was born March 16, 1841, in Pleasant township, and was a daughter of Samuel and Nancy (Jones) Snyder. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Berry: Sheridan C., born December 4, 1865, who died February 1, 1888; Samuel E., born May 11, 1867, residing in Marion, who married Anna Collins; Ella F., born December 9, 1869, who resides on the homestead; Adeline A., born February 6, 1872, who married Jacob Seiter, of Green Camp township, and has three children; Milton W., born December 15, 1873, who died December 19, 1897; Jetta V., born June 7, 1876, who died February 9, 1902; Harley W., born July 11, 1882, and Katie 0., born March 30, 1884, both living on the home farm and Ulysses Eugene, born August 19, 1868, who died January 7, 1869.
Eleanor BERRY and Samuel Brooke BEALL

Hi:

I am trying to narrow down some information on Eleanor (Berry)Beall. I do not have a birth year (or place) or a death date (or place) for Eleanor. I believe her father was Benjamin Berry and her mother was Deborah Eversfield.

She married Samuel Brooke Beall in 1785 in Prince Georges Co., MD. They had two children: Otho Berry, born in 1790 and Richard Berry, born in 1792.

She was not mentioned in her father's will so I am making the assumption that she died before 1827. This may be an incorrect assumption.

I believe her husband, Samuel, remarried around 1804-1806 so I could make the assumption that she was deceased by that time. This also could be an incorrect assumption.

If anyone can assist me with information on Eleanor I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks...

Hi,
I think this is also my family. I think Rebecca Berry was my great great grandmother. I don't know for sure but her birthday matches mine and this is the only Rebeeca I have ever found. All I have on my Rebecca is that she was called Bell. I have a picture of her as a teen and the marriage certificate of her and John Johnson. She was said to be at least part Indian and from her picture it looks like she had a lot of Indian. She was born 8-18-1864 and died 6-15-1894. she had 6 children and my great grandmother was only 6 yrs old. Do you have any pictures? I would like to see if my Rebecca looks like any of William and Sarah's children. I just feel this is the right family.
Teresa Hammer

I am still looking for any info on my grandfathers family. I know that Charlie Berry, his wife Fannie (Fergurson) Berry, and there children Eva, Annie, Mattie(macintosh) Berry, Horace and Henry , were all living in Smithville, Hamilton county, around 1900 until Charlie died about 1920. His family moved to Oneco, FL. (which is I believe is manatee county now)exept for Annie, and Mattie. Does anyone recognize any of these names?
